HISTORY OF BSNL
Alexander Graham Bell patented the first
Telephone instrument capable of practical use in 1876. This method was used in the first commercial instrument developed by Bell in 1876. In 1878, the first telephone exchange was
established at New Haven. In 1880, two Telephone Companies viz. The Oriental Telephone Company Ltd. and The Anglo-Indian Telephone Company Ltd. approached the Govt. of India for permission to establish Telephone Exchanges in India. The permission was however refused on the grounds that the establishment of Telegraphs was a Government monopoly and that the Government itself would undertake the work in the event of sufficient demand. By 1881, Govt. of India changed their earlier decision and licence was granted to the original Oriental Telephone Company Limited of England for opening Telephone Exchanges at Calcutta, Bombay, Madras, Karachi and Ahmedabad. 28th January, 1882, is a Red Letter Day in the history of Telephone in India. On this day Major E. Baring, Member of the Governor General's Council declared open the Telephone Exchange in Calcutta, Madras and Bombay. The exchange at Calcutta named "Central Exchange" was opened at third floor of the building at 7, Council House Street. On 30-06-1882, the Central Telephone Exchange had 93 number of subscribers.

House Street. The management of the Oriental Telephone Company was subsequently taken over by Bengal Telephone Company Limited. The
telephone system in the city remained under management of Private Company till 1941 when all the shares of the Private company were purchased by a Public Enterprise. The capital expen- diture involved in this deal was Rs 117 lakhs only. From 1st April 1943, the control of the Telephone system in Calcutta, Madras and Bombay was taken over directly by the
Indian Posts and Telegraphs Deptt. In 1985, Indian P & T was bifurcated and the control of Telephone has been transferred to Deptt. Of Telecom. On 01-102002, the telephone system of Calcutta came under Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) alongwith all other circles except the city of Delhi and Mumbay which are under Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL).

ONE INDIA PLAN:BSNL
PLANNS
OF
BSNL
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) have launched "One India Plan" with effect from 01.03.2006. This they claim will be one of the most affordable, customer friendly and innovative schemes for both local and long distance calls. Under the new Scheme, the customer will be able to call any place in India either by landline or mobile by merely spending Rs.1 per minute. The "One India" plan, also, for the first time, takes away the distinction between the fixed line tariff and the cellular tariff and thus, makes the tariff "technology independent". A similar plan has also been introduced for the customers of post paid and pre-paid mobile services of BSNL and MTNL.
AdvantageofOneIndia
There is no charge shift to a new tariff plan. You need to pay a deposit of Rs 1,000 if your phone does not have an STD facility now. However, if you have a phone with STD at present, you need not pay any deposit. You can makes calls to fixed/WLL/mobile (own network) at Re 1 for 180 seconds. You can call any other mobile number at Re 1 for 60 seconds.
You can call any STD number (landline or mobile) at Re 1 for 60 seconds.
Disadvantages of OneIndia
The rent will be hiked to Rs 299, irrespective of what rent you are paying now.
There will be no free calls in this plan. A hike in the monthly rental is more than double the rental in some of the existing plans. the plans that you have opted for.
Across the various plans, rents are quite low, and it is complemented with free calls depending o instance, when you opt for a plan of Rs 500 you get 450 free calls. discounts. There will be no discounts irrespective of the usage.

AIRTEL(Bharti):Bharti Tele-Ventures is today acknowledged as one of India's finest companies, and its flagship brand 'Airtel', has over 19 million customers across the length and breadth of India. From the creation of 'Airtel', one of India's finest brands, to becoming the largest manufacturer and exporter of world class telecom terminals under its 'Beetel' brand, Bharti has created a significant position for itself in the global telecommunications sector. The largest investment in the Indian telecom sector comes with, Vodafone to invest approximately Rs. 6,700 crores (approx. USD 1.5 bn.) to acquire around 10% in Bharti Tele-Ventures Ltd. Bharti thus establishes its supremacy in the Indian telecom market, having attracted Asia's best - SingTel, and now world's best - Vodafone.
Airtel introduced huge cuts in fixed line rates in August 2005 of up to 42%. Customers calling from an Airtel landline to any other local landline, can now talk for as little as 50 cents for 3 minutes at nighttime, which is the lowest local landline rate in Seychelles. Airtel's off-peak period is from 7pm to 7am and also includes full 24-hours on Public Holidays and weekends. The peak rate, from 7am to 7pm, was also reduced by 10% to 70 cents for 3 minutes. The fixed line services offered by Airtel works on a 62 kpbs copper wire line and ensures crystal clear communication and there are various value-added services from party conferencing to Calling Line Identification (requires a CLI telephone terminal). The Airtel Fixed Line can also be used for data transmission and is ideal for your Internet needs or access. Airtel reduced its Internet dial-up rates up to 42% in August 2005, now offering the best dial-up rates in the country. Calls made to your local Internet Service Providers (ISP) are charged at SR0.60 from 7am to 7pm, SR0.50 from 7pm to 11pm and SR0.40 from 11pm to 7am (incl. GST) for every six minutes to are online.

A life time incoming free scheme has been introduced for the fixed wireless consumers by the company. S.P.Shukla, president, Wireless, Reliance Infocomm said, While mobile tariffs have fallen drastically due to competition in the last three years, fixed wireless phone tariffs have remained more or less static and have not witnessed much innovation. We would like to revolutionize fixed wireless phone tariff with these two path breaking schemes. The One India scheme is
designed to change the way people perceive and use long distance calls. The life time free incoming scheme with absolutely No Monthly Recurring Charges will make the landline telephony more affordable for the masses.
Under the One India tariff plan, Reliance fixed wireless customers can make calls to any phone, anywhere in the country, for just 1 Rupee per minute. The tariff for local and intra-circle calls to Reliance phones will be 40 paisa per minute and 1 Rupee for all other calls. The One India scheme will have a monthly rental of Rs 499. By making a one-time payment of Rs 2999, Reliance customers will get life time incoming free on their fixed phones. The tariff will be Rs 1.20 per pulse for local calls, with the 3 minute pulse to local fixed phones and Reliance phones and 45 second pulse for mobiles in non-metros and 60 second pulse for mobiles in metros.
