ASSIGNMENT 1
Review Structural Analysis and Design
Assigned: Due: Tuesday, January 7, 2013 Monday, January 21, 2013 4:00 p.m.

1. Classify the structures below as being statically determinate or indeterminate, stable or unstable. Show calculations for degree of indeterminacy, n. If the structure is indeterminate, state the degree of indeterminacy. If the structure is unstable, indicate the source of instability. Trusses:

2. Determine the reactions and draw bending moment, shear force and normal force diagrams for each frame shown in Figure 1. Clearly label the shear force and bending moment diagrams to indicate the magnitude of V and M at discontinuities, maximums, etc. Indicate which portions of the plots are parabolic, cubic or higher degree functions (where applicable). Indicate whether bending moment diagrams are drawn on the compression or tension side. Sketch a qualitative deflected shape for each of the frames.

3. Sketch a qualitative bending moment diagram for each frame shown in Figure 2. Do not compute values. Sketch a qualitative deflected shape for each frame.

4. Determine the distribution of normal stresses due to bending for the composite section shown in Figure 3 when subjected to a bending moment of 875 kN-m (moment produces compression at top fibre). Use a transformed section analysis with the following steps: i. Locate the centroid (neutral axis) and compute the moment of inertia for the transformed section. Transform Material 1 into an equivalent area of Material 2.

ii. Compute the bending stress in the transformed section at the top and bottom fibres, and at the interface between the materials. iii. Plot the distribution of bending stresses over the depth of the cross-section and indicate the maximum stress in both materials.

Figure 3 5. A 10m simply-supported reinforced concrete beam is subjected to the specified (unfactored) loading shown in Figure 4 (wSD does not include self-weight). Determine whether the beam is adequate according to the flexural requirements of CSA A23.3-04. Use basic principles (not design tables or Kr) to determine the factored moment resistance of the section.

Figure 4 6. Design an alternative to the reinforced concrete beam in Question 5 using structural steel. Use the CISC Beam Selection Tables (CSA S16) to choose the lightest W-Section that will support the loading shown in Figure 4. Assuming the same architectural limitations, the depth of the W-section should not exceed 750 mm. Assume the beam to be braced laterally only at the supports, and use G40.21 350W Steel.
