CHAPTER 2 INSTALLATION

2-1. INSTALLATION 2-2. Installation Prerequisites: The following procedures must be accomplished prior to strainer installation. a. Check cleanliness of the unit. Ensure tha the unit is clean and free of all wrapping and packing material. Special attention should be given to bores of inlet, outlet, and flushing connection flanges. NOTE A differential pressure gauge must be installed to monitor the pressure differential between the inlet and outlet. b. Ensure water flow through the strainer is in the direction of the flow arrow on the strainer body. The open end of the screen(s) should be visible through the strainer outlet. NOTE Type AH strainers must be installed with the input flow entering downward, from the top, and exiting to the side, with the flushing connection on the bottom. Type DA and DH strainers can be installed in the vertical up-flow position, or in the horizontal position with both screens in the horizontal plane, and the flushing connection must be on the bottom or the side. Type SA and SH strainers can be installed in the vertical up-flow position; however, the preferred position is horizontal with the flow position and screen in the vertical plane, and the flushing connection on the bottom. a. Position the connecting flanges as close as practical and parallel to the strainer. b. Align all flange bolt holes so that fasteners can be inserted by hand without using pry bars, chain hoists, or similar mechanical devices.

2-3. Strainer Positioning: Position the strainer as follows:

CHAPTER 3 CLEANING
3-1. CLEANING 3-2. Manual Cleaning Procedures (AH, DH and SH Type Strainers): When the differential pressure exceeds 4 PSI, perform the following manual cleaning procedures. a. Open the overboard discharge valve. b. Open flushing line cut-out valve(s) completely and watch the sight flow indicator, if installed. c. Rotate each hand wheel two (2) revolutions. d. When sight flow indicator shows no entrained solids (i.e., a clear flow), close the flushing line cut-out valve. Continue flushing strainer for approximately 1 minute to ensure all debris is flushed overboard. e. If the differential pressure still exceeds 2 PSI, repeat steps a through d. 3-3. Automatic Cleaning Procedures (DA and SA Type Strainers): When the differential pressure exceeds 4 PSI, the high pressure switch sends a signal to controller which opens the discharge valve and energizes the strainer screen motor(s) which will rotate the screens for 15 seconds. a. The debris falls into the bottom of the strainer assembly and is discharged out the drain connection. b. After the 15-second cleaning cycle, the strainer screen motor(s) will stop, and the discharge valve(s) close(s). The strainer screen motor(s) will remain idle and the discharge valve(s) will remain closed until the next automatic cleaning cycle.
