IN 2009-2010:
198,927 people saw CTCs 2009-2010 productions, including 72,925 who attended with reduced price tickets through one of CTCs access programs. 1,777 students participated in Theatre Arts Training classes. 557 students in urban elementary and middle schools participated in the Neighborhood Bridges theater arts program. Three CTC productions were world premieresBert & Ernie, Goodnight!, Iron Ring, and The Biggest Little House in the Forest. CTC won a 2010 Distinguished Play Award for an adaptation of a childrens book from the American Alliance for Theatre and Education. The prize-winning play is Iqbal, adapted by playwright Jerome Hairston from the book by Francesco DAdamo. CTC commissioned the play and premiered it on its UnitedHealth Group Stage in March 2009. CTCs Young Directors Festival provided teens with the resources they need to realize their dream of directing a theatrical production for the public. In December 2009, three teen directors and their teenage creative teams, stage managers, and casts staged their own work during a two-week festival of public performances. Ready for Life, an initiative to create artistic and educational programming informed by early learning research, provided very young children with quality opportunities for them to extend their own world of imaginative play. Beginning in January 2010, in six Twin Cities day care and preschool facilities, children participated in Early Bridges, a curriculum of storytelling and role-playing designed to help them meet the Minnesota Department of Education Early Childhood Indicators of Progress. As part of the program, CTC toured its production of The Biggest Little House in the Forest, adapted by Rosanna Staff from the book by Djemma Bider, to six facilities. We also provided free tickets to fourteen additional facilities to attend the play. In 2009-2010, the University of Minnesota Press began publishing most of the twenty-six Threshold plays in a series of four, theme-based anthologies. The first volume, Fierce and True, includes our pieces for teen audiences, including Prom, by Whit MacLaughlin; Anon(ymous), by Naomi Izuka; The Lost Boys of Sudan, by Lonnie Carter; Five Fingers of Funk, by Will Power; and Sons, by Oni Faida Lampley.
