She visited hospitals, schools, etc. She also dealt with serious illnesses and health, including AIDS and leprosy. Besides that, she supported organizations working with the homeless children, drug addicts and the elderly. She divorced in 1996. One year later she died in a car accident. Nelson Mandela was born in South Africa in 1918. Until 1992, South Africa had a political system called apartheid. It meant that black people had to live apart from white people. He became a lawyer in 1942. He worked in Johannesburg. Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1944. He joined many protests against the government. In 1960, the government killed many black people. So Mandelas protests became more violent. Because of his work against apartheid, the government sent Mandela to prison for life in 1963. He was in prison, but he became famous. He spent 27 years in prison. In 1990, he became free. In 1994, he became the first black president of South Africa. He worked to improve his country. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. He retired as president in 1999. He is still alive. Martin Luther King was born in Atlanta in 1929. He was an American clergyman and very important leader in the AfricanAmerican Civil Rights Movement. He used nonviolent methods to get civil rights. He became a human rights icon. In 1963, he delivered a speech in Washington. The speech called I have a dream. With this speech, he became one of the greatest orators in American history. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. During his life, he worked for equality among black and white people. He also worked to end poverty and war. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

HARD TO BELIEVE The Ottoman Empire lost the World War I against France, Britain and Italy and signed the Moudros Armistice. After the armistice, the Allied Forces started to control the Ottoman army and share the land of the Empire. The stanbul government and Vahdettin the Emperor were under the control of enemies. So the government didnt carry out his responsibilities and signed the Treaty of Sevres. The treaty meant the end of the Empire and the independence of the Turkish people on their own land. But the Turkish didnt accept slavery. They chose to struggle for their independence. The struggle for independence, the War of Independence started on May 19, 1919 when Mustafa Kemal arrived in Samsun. Because of the conditions Moudros Armistice, the Turkish army had no weapons. The Turkish soldiers had also no food to eat. Men, women and even small children fought with axes, shovels, sticks and with their heart. It is hard to believe but the Turkish people wrote legends. Then the enemies started to leave the country.
