How to set your thermostat

Setting your thermostat

Setting your thermostat correctly is one of the best ways to ensure that you are using energy efficiently in your home. It can help to dramatically reduce your heating bills and save you 55 a year or more, all while keeping you toasty warm. Read on for our easy four step guide to setting your thermostat. 1 Firstly, identify what type of thermostat you have in your home. Older thermostats tend to be mechanical while newer ones will more likely be electronic. If you have a single thermostat that controls the temperature in all rooms, youll usually find it next to the boiler system. 2 Next, set the temperature to the desired level. This is usually done by turning the dial to the desired number. Some digital thermostats, like certain models of programmable room thermostat controllers, can be adjusted using the buttons on the face of the unit. 3 The ideal room temperature for most homes is around 18 degrees Celsius but you may prefer to set it a little higher to 20 or 21 degrees if you or somebody living with you is elderly. However, remember that increasing the temperature by just one degree can cost around an extra 55 a year. 4 Finally, look out for other ways to save energy. If you have many people around at the same time, you may be able to turn your thermostat down a few degrees. You should also look out for any ways to increase the efficiency of your central heating system, like clearing any air blockages in radiators by bleeding them.
