Overview and Trends

South Africas agricultural sector is unlike those of other countries in that it is not dominated by subsistence farming and is self-sufficient in virtually all major agricultural products. The estimate was that agriculture accounted for 3.4% of GDP and 10% of total employment, even though only 13% of SAs surface area can be used for crop production. This is due, in the main, to the lack of availability of water and the uneven distribution of rainfall. Total gross agricultural production was ZAR17 billion 2008/2009. 25000

Agricultural exports ZAR million from different industries against years (2001 -2009) DAFF

South Africas primary agricultural exports declined significantly, from ZAR7.5 billion in the third quarter of 2010 to ZAR4.2 billion in the fourth quarter, while primary agricultural imports moved more or less sideways. The U.S.A., Germany and the UK are the primary food importers. South Africas total agricultural and food imports from Germany rose significantly from ZAR2.1 billion to ZAR2.5 billion, driven by a rise in imports of pork and coffee extracts, which increased by 132% and 21% respectively. Despite the drawbacks, South Africa is a net exporter of agricultural products. The largest export groups are raw sugar, fresh grapes, citrus, nectarines, wine and deciduous fruits. Other important exports include avocadoes, plums, maize, black tea, groundnuts, meat, pineapples, tobacco, wool and th th cotton. South Africa is the 10 largest producer of sunflower seed in the world and the 13 -biggest th producer of sugar cane, 50% of which is exported. It is also ranked 9 as a wine producer eeven though there is only a relatively small domestic market whereby per capita consumption is barely 9 litres.

One of the success stories of South African produce is that of Rooibos tea. Rooibos - it's an Afrikaans word that means "red bush," and until recently it has been one of Africa's bestkept secrets. The South African export control board reported 4,500 metric tons of Rooibos exported in 2000, more than twice the amount for 1999. Major destinations include Europe (Germany, Netherlands, and United Kingdom), Asia (Japan, South Korea, China, and Malaysia), and North America (U.S.A. and Canada). Rooibos continues to be used extensively in South Africa, at a rate of 3600 tons per year for the domestic market. Rooibos appears to be headed towards becoming the second most commonly consumed beverage tea ingredient in the world after ordinary tea (Camellia sinensis). The food industry in South Africa is partly a reflection of its major agricultural activities and partly of a sophisticated smallish First world economy in a larger third world one. If the liquor industry is included the sector grows rd substantially as a company like South African Breweries (SAB Miller) is the 3 largest brewing company in the world. The following food processing sectors all have turnovers in excess of ZAR2.5 billion: flour and other milled products, beer and malt, slaughtering and preparing of meat, canning and preserving of fruit and vegetables, bakery products, sugar, animal feeds, and wine and distilling. Food and beverages manufacturing accounted for 16.4% of SAs manufacturing production and ZAR165841 million in sales in 2006.

The agro-food complex (inputs, primary production, processing) contributes approximately ZAR124bn to South Africas GDP, i.e. 14% and employs 451000 people in the formal sector, i.e. 10%. The Agro processing sector (food, beverages and tobacco) contributes 16.4% (ZAR131.3bn) to total manufacturing sales in 2004, making it the third largest manufacturing sector in South Africa. The food processing industry has 12 downstream sub sectors. They are meat processing; dairy products; preservation of food and vegetables; canning and preserving fish; fruit canning and jams; vegetable and animal oils and fats; grain mill products; sugar mills and refineries; chocolate and sugar confectionery; prepared animal foods; bakery products and other food products, such as starch and starch products; and ready-made meals. There is a variety of food processing industries such as corn starch and syrup manufacturer, Tongaat-Hulett. Canned and frozen fruit and vegetables are well known internationally as is South Africas frozen seafood. Packed and bottled fruit juices and processed meats can also be found worldwide. Many South African companies have formed associations with overseas ones to gain access to the latest technology and expertise in their respective industries. Examples of such are Simba with Frito-Lay (U.S.A.) in the snack food industry, Robertsons with Bestfoods (U.S.A.) in savoury foods and soups and NCD Clover with Danone (France) in dairy products. Food consumption in South Africa, in both overall dollar terms and per-capita terms is set to increase considerably over the next five years leading up to 2010 with growth of 39.6% and 37.1% forecast respectively. This is, mainly, due to the emerging black middle class which is driving consumer spending. Food distribution patterns are also changing in that it has been estimated that 50% of South African food sales go through wholesale and cash and carry outlets, chiefly, as a result of the lack of formal retail outlets on the outskirts of urban and in rural areas. However, with the growth of disposable income outside of cities, the bigger supermarket chains, such as Pickn Pay, Shoprite and Spar, are starting to invest in these areas. These developments are in turn affecting what is eaten. Consumer exposure to a greater variety of foods and an equivalent reduction in the time that is available to prepare meals has meant that there has been a marked increase in sales of convenience foods. Another industry that appears to be growing rapidly is that of Dairy products whereby there has been a significant increase in turnover of yoghurts and dairy drinks, etc. See appendix 1 for Swiss food and beverage trade with South Africa

Food Packaging
In 2009 South Africans consumed an estimated 2.5 Million tons of packaging in all types - paper, plastic, metal and glass .This figure excludes exports of empty and filled packaging and includes imports into SA. The average real growth rate for the last ten years in the SA Packaging Industry has been approximately 2.5% (Source: BMI Foodpack)

Packaging is produced using four primary raw materials and these are reflected in size ranking in 2008, as follows: Volume 1) Paper 2) Glass 3) Plastics 4) Metals Please see Appendix 2: Food packaging companies There is also an increasing awareness of green issues in packaging and PACSA is currently (April 2011) writing the Industry Waste Management Plan for the Packaging and Paper Industries and expect to complete this document for approval by government before the end of July 2011. It is anticipate that this will be formalised and gazetted by the Department of Environmental Affairs by the end of 2011. There are already some companies such as Green Home (www.greenhome.co.za) that produce exclusively recyclable packaging and SAAPI-Enviropack (www.greenerpackage.com ). Green issues are an ever growing trend within South Africa and should be taken into account when considering doing business in SA.
