recognizing discourse patterns and markers. Words such as first, then, finally, or but, and, so give important signals about what is coming next in a spoken text. This is especially important when listening to a sequence of events, such as in a story or a set of instructions.
ORGANIZING LISTENING
The development of listening skills does not have to rely on the availability of a cassette or prerecorded material. Much can be done by the teacher simply speaking while all the children follow what she says with a given purpose in mind and a specific task to complete. Many of the activities described in chart below rely on the teacher's use of spoken instructions, descriptions, songs, rhymes, games and stories used with the whole class. If you do have a cassette of published listening materials, this is useful to provide a good model of spoken English and allows learners, both those who work slowly and those who complete activities quickly, to work independently at their own pace. The materials used may take the form of published materials or may be teacher-made recordings of simple stories with accompanying activities and so on. In this case, it is useful to consider setting up a 'listening corner' in one part of the classroom. It can be created by screening off a corner, with a cupboard or screens, to provide a quiet area for children to listen in pairs or groups. The children will of course need to be trained in how to use a cassette player on their own. It is also necessary to make sure the materials the children will use are easily available and are clearly labelled or colour-coded to show their level of difficulty. The activities can be made 'self-correcting', so that the children can find out quickly whether a listen and sequence activity, for example, has been completed correctly.
Activity type
1 Listen and repeat Examples of this are found in games such as Chinese Whispers where one child whispers a message to another child, who then passes on the message to another child and so on. The last child repeats what they have heard and the class compare this message with the original. Some very interesting variations often occur. Other listen and repeat games ask the learners to repeat something only If it is true. 2 Listen and discriminate In this kind of activity the learners' attention is often focused on pronunciation features such as listening for words which rhyme, or selecting phrases which have the same rhythmic pattern. This is especially useful when using songs and rhymes or when using stories which have rhyming sequences. 3 Listen and perform actions/follow instructions This kind of activity is used with action songs, rhymes, or games such as Blind Man's Buff or What's the Time Mr. Wolf? Following instructions can also be used as a listening activity when the learner is asked to trace a route on a plan or map. It should not be used, however, if the children have not practised doing this in their mother tongue. 4 Listen and draw/colour Picture dictation is often used to help children focus on key nouns and on adjectives used to describe their colour, size, shape and so on. The whole picture can be drawn or a picture which has missing items can be added to as children listen. 5 Listen and predict This kind of activity has already been referred to and is particularly useful in drawing on pupils' previous learning.

6 Listen and guess This kind of listening is often based on the description of something whose identity the children have to guess 7 Listen and label This activity Is used with drawings, maps or diagrams where the learners are asked to listen to a description of an animal, person, or place in order to label key parts. 8 Listen and match This usually Involves matching pictures to spoken words and is common in games such as Bingo. Older children can be involved in activities which ask them to match pictures or written statements to other written texts, such as speech bubbles taken from dialogues or stories. 9 Listen and sequence As described earlier this activity Is usually based on pictures or written phrases which are rearranged into the correct order while listening to a story or set of Instructions. 10 Listen and classify This activity is also usually based on pictures. The children listen carefully to descriptions, for example, different animals, which they then have to sort into different sets. These might include sets of wild animals or pets: animals with four legs, two legs and no legs; animals which can swim, fly or move on the ground. 11 Listen and transfer information This Involves an exchange of information in pairs or groups. The pupils might be asked to carry out a survey or questionnaire where they ask each other questions and listen carefully for the answer. The responses are recorded on a chart to help the children remember details and to consolidate their understanding. Common surveys are based on finding out about favourite sports, likes and dislikes concerning food, birthdays and so on:
