Darjeeling has a moderate climate with all five distinct seasons in a year. The best season to visit the place is from September to June, take woolen clothes in winters. Winters (December to January) have a cool climate within the average range of 5 C to 7 C. Minimum temperature this season can be freezing 2 C. Snowfalls are not common during winters. It is an ideal time for honeymooning. Spring (February to March) season is charming with moderate climate. This season is best with scenic beauties. Summers (April to June) are mild with maximum temperature never crossing 25 C. the pleasant climate attracts lots of tourists during this season. The time is favorable for all tourist activities. Monsoons (July to August) are accompanied with intense torrential rain causing roadblocks. Travel within city

Darjeeling is a popular tourist place and it has a few inter- city transport options. The nearest airport is at Bagdogra near Silguri which is around 96 km from the city. Siliguri is the closest town which has railway station and there are many options to reach Darjeeling from Siliguri. Shared taxi and shared jeeps are the main mode of transport from Siliguri to Darjeeling. They usually cost around Rs 120 and can take up to 10 people. Tourist can also reach Darjeeling by bus. There are regular bus services from Silguri. The best options for local travel in Darjeeling are either on foot or by shared jeep.

Shared Jeep
Shared jeeps are available extensively through Darjeeling. These are the cheapest and easiest way to travel around the city. They are available in the main areas and cost between Rs 10 to 20.

Taxi
Taxis are also available from the taxi stand near the mall. This is also a good option as they are comfortable and are useful for day trips. They charge around Rs 750 for day trips to nearby places.

On Foot
The best option to visit the various sites in Darjeeling is on foot. The steep roads and rocky terrain are best accessed on foot.

Darjeeling Toy Train

Darjeeling Toy Train is UNESCO accredited world heritage icon, which began its first service in the year 1881. Birch Hill Park, also known as Jawahar Parbat is an off-shoot from the Mall and houses the Raj Bhavan. Some of the popular tourist attractions located here are Mountaineering Museum, Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and Observatory Hill.

Dhirdham Temple
The Dhirdham temple is located below the railway station. The temple resembles the famous Pasupathinath Temple of Kathmandu. It was built in 1939. A statue of Lord Shiva is present outside of the temple depicting "Pancha Bakram Tri Netram"five different facial expressions in different moods and the Third Eye of Lord Shiva are depicted. The temples roof is influenced by Tibetan architectural style. Aarthis are held at 8 am and 6 pm.

The zoo and the two museums are run by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, which trains mountaineers. The Everest museum is situated next door. This museum traces the history of attempts to climb the Everest. Sherpa Denzing Norbay, who conquered Mount Everest along with Edmund Hillary, was the director of the institute. He died in 1896. His statue is standing near his cremation spot.

Glenburn Tea Estate

With the increasing popularity of tea tourism, tea plantations now have embraced the idea to open small estate or hotel, which will give visitors a chance to witness the tea production process as well as get away from it all. Among one of such estate or hotel is the Glenburn Tea Estate located in Darjeeling, West Bengal. There are three ways to reach Karmi Farm: you can get dropped at the foot of the hill and walk around 15 minutes; a 90-minute jeep ride through tea gardens, followed by a 3-hour ride through countryside; or 8 hours walk.

Lloyd Botanical Garden

Lloyd Botanical Garden stands in the memory of a resident of Darjeeling, Mr. William. In 1878, he made over a beautiful piece of land to facilitate the creation of a botanical garden. Initiated as a branch of the Royal Botanical Garden, Kolkata, the garden is situated at an altitude of 1800 meters. The garden represents the characteristic flora of the Eastern Himalayas. Sir John Anderson Rock Garden of this garden is where many alpine and sub-alpine plants grow under conditions akin to their natural habitats. More than 60 orchids representing various terrestrial and epiphytic species are found in the Orchid House, a spacious glass house. A herbarium, which is a stone building built in Elizabethan style, is also present here. Living fossil plants are another attraction.

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is claimed to be the only zoo in the world to breed Tibetan wolf in captivity. It is also the first South Asian zoo to breed Snow Leopard and Siberian Tiger. Rare red pandas are also seen here. The park is situated at an altitude of 2133.5 meters, with scenic and mighty Kanchenjunga forming the backdrop. The zoo was established in 1958, with the aim of conserving the Himalayan fauna. Senchal Lake
Senchal Lake is located at an altitude of 8515 feet above the sea level. This lake serves as the water reservoir for the supply of water for Darjeeling.
