THE MODEL CLASSROOM DESIGN TEAM | LINCOLN COUNTY, OREGON PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT As part of LCSDs Innovative Approaches to Literacy Grant, The Model Classroom Program (MCP), a project of the Pearson Foundations New Learning Institute, is piloting an innovative professional development opportunity with us this year. REFLECT. IMMERSE. APPLY. REPEAT. The Model Classroom Design Team is an immersive professional development opportunity, allowing teachers to reflect on their own practice and apply small changes directly in their classroom over the course of the school year. The Design Team will be facilitated by the Model Classroom Program, but teachers will be the true designers of the experience as they develop ideas for direct implementation within the classroom- focusing on extending their current work. The emphasis is on 21st century approaches to learning: specifically student-centered learning strategies, challenge-based practices, leveraging real world learning opportunities, and sensible technology integration. Participating teachers will build a toolbox of examples for implementing and aligning this work with the Common Core State Standards. Most importantly, this approach allows teachers-- and their students-- to become actively engaged in hands-on, meaningful learning opportunities. | Objectives | Upon completion of the Model Classroom Design Team, teachers will better be able to: Build a learning culture that supports self-reflection, the testing of new ideas, and ultimately: student-centered learning Explore challenge based learning as a tool for leveraging real world learning opportunities, both small (daily classroom practices) and big (challenge-based project) Document best practices of 21st century learning and teaching examples in order to support CCSS implementation (i.e. reading & writing across the curriculum, collaboration, student-centered classroom) Identify engagement strategies for seamless integration of digital technologies and social media throughout the entire learning process including research, discussion, constructive feedback, production, editing, and showcasing.

| Output | {Documentation of Practice} Teachers will work collaboratively to develop a strategy kit of essential skills and practices for CCSS implementation, 21st century teaching practices, and technology integration. The Design Team will determine the best way to share this information, working with Model Classroom staff to build this over the course of the program. Documentation of each teachers reflective process and implementation of new ideas is essential to this process. With the support of Model Classroom, all teachers will: Keep a Team Journal or narrative describing progress towards personal goals Document and share in-class implementation and testing of new ideas through documentation (photo, video, drawing, student work, student comments, etc.) on an online social platform* Participate in online discussions, providing constructive feedback and asking questions to further each others learning
* Note: Documentation may include challenge-based project examples.

Session One: The 21st century Educator and Student (online) Tuesday, January 8th, 3:30-5:30pm PST OR Thursday, January 10th, 3:30-5:30pm PST Problem| Who is the 21st century teacher? What are his/her skills and common practices? Who are 21st century students? How do they learn? How do we teach them? Session Length| one month Structure| Online meeting initiates session, followed by brief team consultations, and participants recording classroom practices within journals and social network space. Content Areas Explored| 21st century skills, technology integration, design thinking, interest- based learning, student-centered learning, Common Core Alignment And so it begins. We all start best by considering ourselves, so lets take the time to actually do that. This opening session asks you to reflect on how your own teaching practice has evolved over time, think about where youd like to take it, then define some key focus areas. Drawing on design practices, youll conduct empathy mapping on each other, building personal profiles and some serious questioning and listening skills. Well then work together to build a prototype of the 21st century teacher, identifying specific skills and common practices. You will use this prototype to identify two focus areas for the upcoming month. Moving beyond ourselves, well take a very close look at our students, considering their motivations and challenges. Using the warm-up empathy mapping activity as inspiration, well determine who this 21st century student is, then design some simple strategies and ideas for making learning more student- centered. A connected assignment challenges you to design small changes to a classroom activity and your physical classroom space, document these changes, and share the results in an online discussion forum.
* Note: You will need to schedule a 15 minute team follow-up consultation with one NLI representative.

Session Two: Intentionally Interdisciplinary & Community Design (in person; two days)
Part One: Intentionally Interdisciplinary Friday, February 8th, 2013, Newport Area Location TBD, 8:30AM-3:30PM Problem| How do you plan experiences that are intentionally interdisciplinary? What does reading and writing across the curriculum really look like? Length | One Month

Structure| Whole group meeting initiates session, followed by personal observations and one- on-one meetings (the following Thursday), teachers record and share practices in social network space. Content Areas | interdisciplinary learning, 21st century skills & literacies, Situated Learning, Challenge Based Learning, Common Core Alignment & Toolkit Where do instructional ideas come from? What comes first, the chicken or the egg? Or more specific to classroom instruction, the activity idea or its standards connections? In this session, well dive deep into the Common Core: a rethinking of our current system of delivering instruction. Well brainstorm how our exploration of the 21st century teacher, student, and school in tandem with redesigned classroom practices have facilitated a rethinking of specific instructional practices. As preparation for this months connected assignment, well rethink the way we approach pacing charts and standards through collaborative game play using real spaces like the Aquarium, the Hatfield Science Center, and the Bayfront as well as content and standards playing cards. Part Two: School Investigation and Design Saturday, February 9th, 2013, Newport Intermediate School Library, 9AM-3:30PM Problem| What learning opportunities and challenges exist within the school grounds? Length | One month Structure| Whole group meeting initiates session, followed by personal observations and one- on-one meetings (the following Thursday), teachers record and share practices in social network space. Content Areas Explored| 21st century skills & literacies, design thinking, technology integration, Situated Learning, Informal Learning, Challenge Based Learning (PBL on steroids), Common Core Alignment True or False: What happens outside the classroom stays outside the classroom? As any teacher knows, kids carry their experience in the lunchroom, playground and music class with them. So what exactly do we do with that? What opportunities and challenges do these outside experiences pose? Youll work in a collaborative team to investigate a specific informal school space, consider multiple perspectives on the space, then define a key problem or opportunity. Finally, well identify strategies for leveraging these spaces, giving students an opportunity for real world problem-solving within the framework of required content and standards. Literacy skills and new media strategies will be addressed. . A connected assignment will challenge you to design a change to your classroom design and an upcoming instructional activity to make it more interdisciplinary and responsive to school culture. During this session, well also begin the active design process of our Common Core implementation toolkit.

Conference Scheduling
March 1st-22nd, 2013 Schedule a team check-in session with a Model Classroom representative. Well use this time to check in on your goals, your journal and documentation, and to answer any questions you may have. Each session will be personalized to meet your needs. Model Classroom will make the March calendar available during the February in-person session.

Session Three: Unpacking Challenge-based Learning

Online Thursday, May 2nd, 3:30-5:30pm PST OR In-person session: Tuesday, May 14th, 4-6:30PM (Location TBD) Problem| How can challenge-based learning be leveraged as part of an interdisciplinary, rigorous curriculum? Length | One Month Structure| Whole group meeting initiates session, followed by personal observations and one- on-one meetings (the following Thursday), teachers record and share practices in social network space. Content Areas | Challenge-Based Learning, 21st century skills & literacies, technology integration, Common Core Alignment & Toolkit What exactly is challenge-based learning (CBL)? How is it like project-based learning, but yet distinctly different? This session will explore CBL key aspects, breaking it down to give you the option of exploring a small piece or a big project-sized bite. A connected assignment will challenge you to design two instances of classroom instruction that pull from CBL theory, or, alternatively- you can opt to design or refine a challenge-based project for implementation in the upcoming months. During this session, well continue the active design process of building our Common Core implementation toolkit.
