Lecture Database Structure - Division, Major, Minor and Item Codes
First let's look at the layout of !tems in a WinEst database - this view shows the items arranged by the traditional 16 Division CS! (Construction Specifications !nstitute) Structure - the top 3 boxes from left to right are the Divisions, Major Sections, and Minor Sections. The single box below these contains the items with Database !tem Codes.
An item in the database is unique based upon a combination of the Ninor Section Code and the !tem Code. In the example below, the item "Vinyl Casement D.V. Window 4-0 x 3-0" has the unique code S564.0040.
Note - The term Ninor Section" is used interchangeably with CS!". WinEstimator, Inc. - !ntroduction to Estimating using WinEst
You can also view this Database arranged by the 200+ CS! NasterFormat. To do this click on the Hier+Level radio button (renamed in screen below to 200+ NasterFormat") to the right of the CS! radio button.
!tems in the 200+ CS! NasterFormat are organized in + levels. These heading levels from left to right are Divisions, Najor Sections, Ninor Sections and Nini Sections. The items are displayed underneath the headings.

Your trainer can supply you a link to the same database used in this training if needed. WinEstimator, Inc. - !ntroduction to Estimating using WinEst
Exercise # 3 Applying Quantities to Items in the Item Takeoff View
1. Fill in the quantities for the renovation project. The quantities are found on the next two pages. There are two ways to enter quantities into an estimate:
A. Type the quantities directly into the Quantity Cell. This can be done either in the !tem Takeoff view or in the Estimate Sheet view.
B. Use the Calculate Takeoff Quantity feature as shown below. First click on the item you wish to quantify. Then type your quantity into the box or boxes right below the label Calculate Takeoff Quantity. When those boxes are filled in click Add Qty and WinEst quantify that item. Although this method may not seem very quick now, it will be very useful later, particularly when quantifying assemblies.
Some items have no quantities. This is for reasons we'll demonstrate later.
