Hermionie Fauser, a longtime volunteer at the Milan Senior and Community Activity Center, has retired to another community after serving for more than 30 years at the center. Fauser was honored by more than 80 community members who came to pay tribute to her with a plaque and picture that will be placed in the centers kitchen, where Fauser spent so much of her time, said Jennifer Michalak, executive director for Milan Seniors for Healthy Living. Fauser was instrumental in developing a place for the seniors in the community to gather together and enjoy each others company Her dream grew into what is today an . active senior activity center, Michalak said. The people living in the Dexter area have built a community by forging bonds to improve their overall quality of life and to make the area a great place to live not to prepare for any major disaster. All the same, the communitys strength played a key role in the immediate reaction to and recovery from the devastating F3 tornado that touched down on March 15 and damaged more than 200 homes, some of

which are still in the process of being rebuilt or repaired. The tornado and the communitys response make it Heritage Medias No. 1 story of 2012. Virtually every organization and agency within Washtenaw County responded in some way, proving the communitys strength and laying the groundwork for future emergency response not just in Dexter, but across Washtenaw County. You dont think about where you are going to store the 100 cases of water that Lowes wants to give you, said Assistant Village Manager Courtney Nicholls. Managing donated resources, directing eager volunteers (or holding them back initially when their helpfulness could

put them in harms way), reaching residents when your electronic means of communication are hamstrung by lost power these are some of the experiences that local government officials have learned from. The hope is that there wont be another incident of such magnitude in the county, but the Dexter area and its partners in the tornado response at the Washtenaw County Sheriff s Office, the Michigan State Police and the county government walked away wiser and more prepared. Seniors enjoy holiday tea, concert

Annual event organized by Milan teacher

Milan Middle School students honored area senior citizens with a Holiday Tea Dec. 19 in the school librarium. The seniors were entertained by the students with sea-

sonal musical selections and dramatic performances. The annual event was spearheaded by social studies teacher Sharleen Stearns, who said she had lots of help. Refreshments were prepared by students in teacher Stephanie Redmonds living skills class. Handmade ornaments given as table favors were created in Stearns, Lynne Kochmanskis, Rita Bocks, Linda Edmonsons

and Jenny Heaths classrooms. Several students invited their grandparents to the event. Eighth-grader Austin Blaine invited his great- grandfather Joe Galanti and his grandmother, Lori Galanti. Lydia Allison came to the tea at the invitation of her granddaughter, Haley Prysock. The seniors said they enjoyed the program and the muffins. Students from Stearns citizenship

class served the refreshments. A flute quartet of seventh-and eighth-grade band members played Jolly Old St. Nicholas. New entertainment this year was brought to the stage by teacher Mary Jo Hess drama class. The students performed skits using interpretive techniques. The skits were humorous and drew laughter and applause from the audience.

Hess, who also teaches journalism, handed out copies of The Black and Red sixth-grade newspaper. Shayla Powell, vocal music teacher, accompanied the choirs on piano. A featured number was a rendition of Silent Night performed by the sixthgrade choir in German. Powell closed the program with the traditional finale for all choir performances, Peace, Peace.
