Olive Grove Nurseries

Olive Grove Nurseries is a new and exciting business venture which specialises in the importing of Olive Trees and Mediterranean plants to the UK. We are a family business which has been planned, developed and structured around our own lifestyle and is now managed and operated by ourselves, Tim and Jackie Thackeray. Our decision to develop the nursery was born from a desire to create a lifestyle business that would allow us to work, live and meet customers in a relaxed and pleasant environment and the idea to specialise in Mediterranean plants came from living and travelling throughout Western Europe for several years where we developed a love of Olive Trees and exotic palms. On our return to England we experienced great difficulties in sourcing similar plants in the UK for our own patio garden and so decided to create our niche business. As a nation of proud homeowners and keen gardeners, we have all seen the explosion of garden centres and nurseries over the past 20 years, many of whom carry some small lines of Mediterranean plants, but very few will be able to offer the scope, size and variety of our extensive stocks. With over 1200 different shapes, species and sizes of Olive Trees we are sure that we can now be classed as one of the largest suppliers within the UK. Over the last 12 months, we have travelled Europe extensively in our search for the Finest Olive Trees and Mediterranean Plants and now feel we have developed a range to meet our criteria. Each of the plants displayed within our nursery have been specifically chosen and hand-selected by ourselves, taking into careful consideration its quality, form, shape and most importantly its price. Ensuring that we can offer the best value, quality stock to our customers is of high importance to us and paramount to the success of our business. We also understand the need for providing a high level of customer service to everyone who chooses to visit our site whilst providing you all with a personal and warm welcome.

Introduction to Our Brochure

General information about the plants we grow or wish to grow in our gardens is never, it would seem to hand in one place at any time. We have put this brochure together in a bid to help you understand a little more about the plants that we hold in stock and to give you some indication as to how they will look in the future and an insight as to how best to look after them . Any information quoted, is for reference purposes only and cannot be quoted as the definitive. Our brochure is arranged alphabetically according to genus, then by species of that particular genus. Each entry includes a general description about the principal features of the plants and information regarding its characteristics, cultivation, hardiness, planting sites, care and general usage.

Hardiness of Our Plants

Our plants are all imported from the Mediterranean region and in their natural environment they are, completely hardy having adapted to the conditions which prevail in and around their habitat. It is only when they are planted in a completely different situation, and become cultivated plants that hardiness becomes a factor. Although we can quote hardiness on a general scale, other determining factors such as location, shelter, positioning, soil type, etc will all have an impact on the plants growth, survival and characteristics. Certain measures may be taken to help protect some of the plants during the winter periods to increase the likelihood of their survival that include fleece protection, deep mulching and re-positioning.

As a general guide, we have listed each species by their degree of hardiness. A plant which is described as hardy will withstand temperatures that reach as o o low as -15 C/5 F. A frost hardy plant is generally able o o to withstand a drop in temperature to -5C /23 F. Many plants will fall between the two categories of hardy and frost hardy and will, therefore, be seen as borderline. Half hardy plants are those which will o o survive temperatures down to 0 C/32 F whilst those described as frost tender will only withstand o o temperatures to 5 C/41 F.

TERMS FOR HARDINESS Hardy Frost Hardy Half Hardy Frost Tender to -15 C/5 F to -5 C/23 F to 0 C/32 F To 5 C/41 F

We recommend when temperatures fall below the hardiness levels for each individual species that extra protection is given to help your plant to survive during the winter months. Please feel free to ask for our advice on the best plant protection.

It is often seen as a houseplant in the UK as it is undemanding and easy to care for. It has a reputation for being slow growing, but can often produce several new leaves at once. The individual fronds which can be up to 1.5m in length make a rigid, symmetrical arch of deep glossy green leaves These leaves grow out from a fat rather bulbous and chestnut coloured stem that gradually elongates over the years. Dicksonia Antartica
Woolly Tree Fern The most famous tree fern in the Northern Hemisphere, the Dicksonia Antartica has masses of dense fibrous roots which adorn its lower parts. Bi-pinnate, lance shaped fronds grow up to 3m long in the wild, although usually half this in cool summer gardens and the overlapping frond stalk bases persist after the fronds are shed on the upper section. When juvenile, fronds are tightly packed in the crown, emerging in the spring, unfurling into an attractive hairy crosier over a week or so and transforming into bright pale green fronds, maturing to dark green. Trunks should be kept moist at all times; otherwise the fronds will become small and inferior in future years.

Ficus Carica
Common Fig This is a picturesque tropical looking tree with a dramatic spreading habit, whereby the breadth is often wider than the height. A typical Mediterranean tree, it is widely grown for its edible fruit, the fig. Figs are unusual fruits. They are formed from the stem which forms a hollow enclosing tiny flowers. Pollination is reliant on a tiny wasp entering and laying her eggs. The emerging wasps carry pollen from this fig to others and the cycle continues. Once pollinated, the flower forms a fruit still within the hollowed stem. This stem matures to a pear shape that has a small hole at the end of the structure. Figs are most likely to grow on a plant grown in a very warm, sheltered situation.
