[CLIMATE CHANGE & HEALTH PRE-GA PROPOSAL ]

March Meeting 2013

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The IFMSA has been highly active in CLIMATE CHANGE AND HEALTH since 2010, recently diversifying into Sustainable Development and Health. This work culminated in some remarkable achievements on the international level, in collaboration with the WHO. Additionally, IFMSA and its NMOs have undertaken a variety of activities at national and local levels, ranging from curricular change to Greening Hospitals/Sustainable Health Sector initiatives. These activities rely on a backbone of medical student capacity, fostered in workshops such as the one proposed here. The ongoing challenges and opportunities will continue to require strong IFMSA engagement and input. As such, the workshop will also contain practical ADVOCACY training. It will provide students with practical strategies on how to take action on local health equity issues and to lobby for international policy change.

METHODOLOGY
The workshop will involve a mixture of presentations, discussions, problem solving and planning sessions. Students will break into small groups for some of the sessions to enable more in depth discussions and case study work. The workshop will aim to be HIGHLY INTERACTIVE, and to facilitate discussion between the students. Whilst the workshop will be facilitated by one or two students, in an effort to increase the quality of information delivered, an external expert will be sourced for the workshop.

GOALS
1. To provide participants with core knowledge on Climate Change and how it relates to the
health of populations in domains across science, policy and politics 2. To provide participants with practical campaigning and advocacy skills, as well as effective and current frameworks for successful Health and Climate Change Campaigns on local, national and international levels 3. To empower participants to act as advocates for Climate Change and Health within their curricula 4. To provide a forum for students interested in global health to network, exchange ideas and learn about each others experiences of Climate Change and Health.

PARTICIPANTS
The participants will be selected according to geographical diversity, and interest in learning about the global dimension to health and health care. It is vital to the success of the workshop that resource poor countries are well represented as they are often excluded from the global health debate. We will aim to have 30 STUDENTS attend the workshop. However their presence will enable participants to discuss global health matters with students from developing countries, thus making the debate more interesting and lively. Potential participants will be asked to: Complete an application form Prepare for the workshop by studying the pre-reading material provided Read background articles provided by the organisers

Please note that a number of fundraising opportunities are available to us in order to decrease the participation fees. We will be seeking sponsorship from various national and international bodies.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES
Fundamental to the aims of the workshop is to EMPOWER PARTICIPANTS to transfer the knowledge they attain in the workshop to other fellow medical students and carry out a kind of peer-education about key global health issues after their return to their home country. With a large proportion of the workshop dedicated to advocacy and campaigning training, this will form the basis of the follow up for the workshop. We will follow up each participant, providing them with advice and resources from coordinators currently running existing sustainability campaigns. The workshop is intended to inspire to use the knowledge and skills gained to further global health and global health education opportunities in their medical students society, and within the IFMSA.

COLLABORATORS
The workshop will be coordinated by Claudel P-Desrosiers, current President of IFMSA-Qubec, and in collaboration with the Healthy Planet International team. A variety of guest-trainers will be invited to facilitate some specific sessions, such as IFMSA delegates to COP18 and members of Think Global and the Team of Officials.
