Rev. Al Sharpton Issues Statement on Zimmerman Bail

FROM STAFF REPORTS

Justice in the handcuffing and arrest of 6-year-old Salecia Johnson

Why This Is Important
FROM STAFF REPORTS

Reverend Al Sharpton of the National Action Network (NAN) has issued the following statement regarding the granting of bail for George Zimmerman, the killer of Trayvon Martin: The National Action Network will monitor the legal proceedings as they advance. Though we clearly feel the Judge had the basis to deny bail based upon Mr. Zimmermans background, we will continue to stand with the family throughout their pursuit of justice. Though we dont take lightly a persons apology since I personally accepted the apology of a man that tried to kill me leading a march in Bensonhurt we do take note of the family raising the fact that at no point in time before this and with plenty of opportunities, did Mr. Zimmerman publicly or attempt to privately apologize to the family. Thus even the most objective person would have to ask whether the timing is self-serving. National Action Networks concern is that there is a fair trial and it is imperative that a review of the Stand Your Ground Law be conducted because after todays hearing it is clearly the strategy of the defense. As long as this law stands on the books in Florida and other states we consider this a danger and we are committed to fighting that law. For more info about the National Action Network, go here: www.NationalActionNetwork.net.

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA - On April 13th, our six-year-old daughter, Salecia Johnson was handcuffed and arrested at her school, Creekside Elementary in Baldwin, GA for a so-called 'temper tantrum'. She was charged with battery and suspended for the remainder of the school year. The school took all of these actions without notifying us. Although they claim to have called, we did not have any record of these calls on any of our Salecia Johnson phones. As a result our daughter was in police custody for more than an hour before we knew. Salecia has been traumatized by this experience. She's afraid to return to school and recently woke up in the middle of the night saying 'they are coming to get me.' In all of this, the most important thing is that this incident does not become anymore of a setback for Salecia and her future. Although we are now being told that Salecia can return to school after a week and there are reports that the charges have been dropped (the police have not notified us), a record of her arrest exists. Also, we believe there should be a more in-depth examination of what happened and why police were brought in to deal with a matter of school discipline. We are calling on Milledgeville officials to remove any record of Salecia's arrest and end the use of police in school discipline. Please join us in demanding justice for Salecia. We cannot allow this to happen to another child. Thank you, Constance Ruff Comments from readers: Kristen Peterson Anyone involved with this decision needs to lose their job. Period. This is RIDICULOUS! Hand-cuffing a SIX-YEAR-OLD? Really? Clearly, these so-called adults have no ability to deal with the situations that they can and will face with grade-schoolers! dawn robinson This is just so wrong! how is it, it took forever to arrest George Zimmerman but they can arrest a 6 year old? smdh Charlotte King Children deserve our compassion NOT handcuffs! Demeka Campbell Six year olds are not criminals. Robert Hillery This is NUTS! There is no reliable information about why Johnson had this tantrum. Was she perhaps the victim of bullying? Did something else spark this event that was really a teacher or school oversight issue? We do not know, yet Salecia is now a branded trouble maker with a police record. Ridiculous. Expunge this record and every single adult involved needs to do some serious soul searching.

If you claimed the followings without proof: You used the dependents listed below: 12 million illegal immigrants; 3 million crack heads; 42 million unemployable people on food stamps; 2 million people in over 243 prisons; Half of Mexico; and 535 fools in the U.S. House and Senate. Apparently, these were NOT acceptable answers.

Commentary:

I have 3 thoughts about the passing of Dick Clark

1. My first thought will always be that I got to do something in 2007 that millions of people wanted to do, but never got a chance to. I got to dance on American Bandstand (sorta.) As some of you may recall, we held the cabaret portion of the 2007 Soul-Patrol Convention in what was formerly the TV studio of WFIL in Philadelphia. The event was held inside of the very room (bout the size of a small HS gym) where the American Bandstand TV show was filmed. Those of you who were there will recall the floor was decorated with graphical icons, marking the spot where the cameras were placed, where the bleachers were, the outline of the dance floor, Dick Clark's podium stood, the control room & more. Sadly that floor no longer exists. The owners have now replaced it with a regular wooden floor. The cabaret Bob Davis was DJ'ed by our own "Dr G," he truly "FUNKED UP" American Bandstand, and is one of the highlights of my life. It reminds me that what we do with the Soul-Patrol Convention is to try to create "once in a lifetime" opportunities to do something musically that you would otherwise NEVER have the chance to do. (Be there or be square....LOL) 2. Kevin Amos's great audio interview of Stanley Blitz: Funkoverlord Interviews Stanley Blitz, Author of "American Bandstand The Untold Story," which discusses the true story of how the show began as an R&B and Jazz show, how it evolved, how Dick Clark came to replace Bob Horn. This interview appears on the Soul-Patrol.com website at the following link: http://www.soul-patrol.net/bandstand.ram the interview is required listening and the book is required reading if anyone is interested in learning the TRUE history of the American Bandstand TV show. 3. Dick Clark was a man who built a multi-media empire. He did it the "all amerikan way." He came from a wealthy and politically connected family. He used that wealth and political connections to build a powerful foundation for his multi-media empire on the backs of Black American culture. He used that foundation to first avoid going to jail, when clearly what he was doing was the very definition of what is now known as "payola." Next he used that foundation to expand into a vast multi-media empire, taking it even to the point where his name and face became synonymous with a national holiday (megalomania?) Although I am a native of New York, I have lived in the Philadelphia area now for 20+ years and as a result of my various activities with Soul-Patrol.com I have had the chance to speak with many people who have been associated with the American Bandstand TV show, and it is fair to say that people here are proud of the TV show, but few have had nice things to say about Dick Clark. Today there are many Black folks who are celebrating Dick Clark as if he was some sort of "deity." Please do not count me among that group of people. It is one thing for us to continuously allow our culture to be exploited for profit. It is quite another for us to celebrate those who victimize us. --Bob Davis 609-351-0154

REFLECTIONS
What a privilege it is to wake up in the morning! And what an exhilarating experience to feel the surge of life one more time! No wonder the roosters crow, the turtle doves coo unceasingly, the mocking birds sing every tune in their repertoire and the ardinals whistle their distinctive tzewwheet, tzewwheet, tzew, tzew, tzew, tzew! Swelling the graces of that daily morning awakening is another Father Jerome LeDoux kind of gradual, daily awakening that brings a smile to our faces as it works in our minds, understanding, will, heart and very soul to shape us into being all that we can be in a life to the full. This latter awakening is somewhat different for each one of us, beginning early on in some of us, a bit later in others and much later in still others for whatever reasons. But, willy-nilly, at times despite ourselves, an awakening of some kind is always there. Just in case these thoughts are not ringing true for you, lets look at a few for instances. It took all these years for me to lock into the habit of bringing used grocery bags with me to be used for my current shopping. The thought awakened gradually until the day when it suddenly locked in. A light bulb had finally come on. Proceeding one by one, this and others light bulbs will stem the annual tide of 300,000 tons of plastic bag waste. We awaken numerous times during our lifetime, sometimes even a number of times in one day. Light bulbs keep coming on as we grow up a bit from our negative experiences, learning the hard way what philosopher Edmund Burke taught us ca 1770, Those who dont know history are destined to repeat it. How often have we heard the truism that we should use hard times, setbacks, raw deals and even failures to toughen us and build character? Just as our muscles grow stronger through resistance exercise, so are our will and moral resolve steeled by the ordeals we endure. If we keep the right attitude, trials invariably make us better, stronger. Running a close second to trials are the situations where we purposefully choose to pursue the more difficult, the less familiar, the more challenging approach to a problem or the mingling with people and ideas that are outside our comfort zone. These are the jolts that will invariably awaken us more quickly and more completely. At virtually any gathering, people splinter into distinct groups distinguished by characteristics of ethnicity, gender, status, finances, class, religion, politics or linguistics. Beyond those differences, there are considerations such as personalities and interests. Such splintering does not challenge us and consequently does not jolt us awake. Bucking our tendency to break up into cliques and other groups according to our ethnic origins and comfort zone is what awakens us from our sameness and torpor. It is curious to note that this clique and comfort tendency is found among laypersons as well as clergy, in all walks and all conditions of life. It severely impedes our full awakening. The greater part by far of our learning consists in mini-lessons that we experience daily and not infrequently hour by hour. But once in a while, we come face to face with a mind-jiggling, near once-in-a-lifetime epiphany that sets our whole world on edge. If it has not yet happened to you, be on the lookout for it, since it will occur sooner than later. As perhaps most small boys, I detested study. I was not much better as an adolescent. My desire for study was quite eclectic through my twenties, thirties, forties and even into my fifties. Only with the onset of my sixties was I faced with the startling epiphany of the whole world and my whole life as history to be lived and recorded. There is our salvation history powerfully detailed in the Old Testament and carried to its fulfillment in the New Testament. Wrapped into salvation history are the origins of each one of us, the blessings of family and extended family, the sacred lessons and worship of our spiritual family in the Church, and the chronicles of world history. Given a jumpstart by this epiphany of history, my hunger, intensity and drive for knowledge and study bloomed. At long last, the biggest light bulb in my life has come on and I cannot get enough exposure to all the roots and fonts of all kinds of knowledge. We will still be awakening until the moment we return to God. Then, of course, we will be fully awake for the very first time, satisfied to be alive to God for all eternity.
-"God is love, and all who abide in love abide in God and God in them." (1 John 4:16)

WE AWAKEN TILL WE AWAKE NO MORE

Respect and Courtesy Is Not OPld Fashioned

While stopping by one of our advertisers business, his sign in the window popped out at me. Ive seen this sign before, and admired him for using the sign. However, on this particular day, it seemed to have more meaning. It dawned on me that I needed to share this. So, as I was speaking with the owner, his colleague agreed with what we were saying about young men being respectable by pulling their pants up when coming in for service . In fact, he said, The owner (name withheld) is a man of standards. That stuck with me. Now theres a statement that you dont hear every day . The sign says No Service if your pants are pulled down. It shows a young man with his pants low enough to see his underwear. Some young men need to realize that you must show respect when entering a place of business. Just like signs at other businesses that says No shirt no service, or no shoes no service. The same goes for No pants down allowed for service. What does pants-down past the underwear mean anyway? Have you noticed that the pants are getting lower and youre seeing even more of the young men underwear? Do you think this shows respect? If our ancestors were alive to see this, what do you think they would say? What would James Brown say? Remember his song Im Black and Im Proud? What would our beloved Dr. Martin Luther King say? The man who fought so hard for us to have a better life. Dont you think respect and courtesy is still prevalent today? I do. It is not old fashion. LINDA MOBLEY REPORTER

More Food For Thought . .

Never look down on anybody unless youre helping them up. Life is a promise; fulfill it. Generosity begins with our recognition of our debt to others. If all difficulties were known at the onset of a long journey, most of us would never start out at all. We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us.

Think Like a Man Brings in $33 Million Beats Hunger Games at Box Office
For some reason the Hollywood experts didnt see it coming.

ChexSystem
BY MARIA BAUTISTA UNION BANK, N.A. BRANCH MANAGER HUNTINGTON PARK BRANCH

They thought either The Hunger Games would keep steamrolling the competition or The Lucky Ones would be the lucky one and end up as the new number one. Well, neither scenario happened because out the box Think Like A Man became the new leader of the pack and everyone else was eating its dust all weekend long. According to the Hollywood Reporter: the ensemble comedy scored one of the best openings in recent memory for an African-American themed film in debuting at $33 million. Think Like a Man adapted from Steve Harveys best-selling advice book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man gets bragging rights to being the film to topple Liongates blockbuster The Hunger Games, which has now grossed $357 million domestically. The film, whose cast includes Michael Ealy, Taraji P. Henson, Meagan Good, Regina Hall and Kevin Hart, is about four men whose love lives are disrupted when their partners begin using advice from Harveys book and received an A CinemaScore. Think Like a Man, made for a modest $12 million to $13 million, follows the success of Screen Gems The Vow and Underworld Awakening earlier this year. In terms of African-American themed films, Think Like a Man exceeded many of Tyler Perrys recent films. Perrys Good Deeds debuted to $15.6 million earlier this year, while last years Madeas Big Happy Family opened to $25.1 million last year.

Sanford City Rejects Police Chief's Resignation

FROM STAFF REPORTS

Most consumers know that before a lender decides to extend them a loan or a line of credit, they will investigate their credit history, so it is important to maintain a favorable credit score. While your credit history is a critical component of your personal finances, your banking track record is also important. Just as a lender will assess your creditworthiness before extending a loan, most financial institutions will assess your risk level before opening a checking or deposit Maria Bautista account. To help them assess this risk, they may utilize information gathered from an agency that helps them identify account applicants who may have a history of mishandling their bank accounts. There are three major specialty agencies that report on check writing history ChexSystem, Shared Check Authorization Network (SCAN), and TeleCheck. ChexSystem is a nationwide specialty consumer reporting agency that collects and maintains information from member financial institutions such as banks and credit unions. If a bank closes your checking account because of insufficient funds, or believes you have handled your account improperly, it may file a report with ChexSystems so other banks have access to this information when you apply for new accounts. SCAN and Telecheck are check verification services that provide check authorization and verification to its member retailers. These companies maintain a database which contains a comprehensive list of people who either wrote a bad check at a retail location, paid a bill with a check that was returned for non-sufficient funds, or for fraudulent activity. Like credit bureaus, specialty reporting agencies do not make decisions about whether to accept your check, or allow you to open an account. But if these agencies indicate you have a history of writing bad checks, you could find that some businesses refuse to accept your personal checks, even if you do have the funds in the bank to cover it, and some banks may not allow you to open a new account. All three reporting agencies are governed by the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), consumer protection legislation that was designed to ensure that the gathering and sharing of consumer information is done accurately, fairly and with respect for the consumer's right to privacy. Consumers are entitled to one free copy of their report each year by contacting www.consumerdebit.com/consumerinfo/us/en/freereport or by calling (800) 428-9623. It may be prudent to review your ChexSystem report annually, especially if you have been a victim of identity fraud or if someone has fraudulently cashed checks against your account. Bouncing a check is a serious matter. Beyond fees and penalties, the negative information stays on your record between five and seven years, depending on the reporting agency, even if the account was paid in full. And if the check is not made good quickly, the payee can take legal action and it can become a criminal matter. To avoid bouncing a check, always keep close track of your account balance and log debit card transactions and subtract them from your balance immediately. Consider applying for overdraft protection, or talk to your banker about establishing a line of credit or savings account to be used to fund an overdraft. Even with the best intentions, sometimes mistakes can happen, so if you do bounce a check, contact the bank and the merchant and make good on the check right away. Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed Marting in what he claims was self-defense. Sanford police opted against arresting Zimmerman at the time, although a special prosecutor later found enough evidence to charge him with second-degree murder. Monday, April 23: George Zimmerman was released on bail at around midnight Monday after posting bond. The neighborhood watch volunteer will need to wear a tracking device that will allow authorities to keep tabs on his whereabouts anywhere in the United States while he awaits trial for second-degree murder in the death of Trayvon Martin. CBS News reports that Zimmerman is expected to leave Florida. Under the terms of his release, Zimmerman was forced to surrender his passport and must abide by a strict 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew. He is also not permitted to use or possess firearms, and has to check in with authorities every three days. Meanwhile, Zimmerman's attorney Mark O'Mara went on CBS This Morning Monday to do some damage control after Zimmerman offered an unexpected apology to Trayvon's parents during Friday's bail hearing, which was later rejected by the family's attorney. O'Mara said that Zimmerman wouldn't have done it had he known that the family felt the timing of the apology wasn't right, the Associated Press reports.

UPDATE: SANFORD, FL - In a surprise move, Sanford city commissioners voted Monday to reject the resignation of Bill Lee, the local police chief who temporarily stepped aside last month to help soothe tensions over the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. CNN reports that the city had announced earlier in the day that it had reached a separation deal with Lee that would have taken effect at midnight and provided the departing police chief with a severance package. But at a special meeting called to discuss the issue, the city commission voted 3-2 to decline Lee's resignation. Two of the commissioners argued that Lee was a fine public servant who was the victim of the media circus that has surrounded the case. "This is not right. Just on a human level" said Commissioner Patty Mahany, adding that Lee is "one of the finest police officers in Florida" and that calls for his resignation were "solely political." Sanford Police Department Chief Bill Lee The third vote, meanwhile, came from Mayor (C) temporarily stepped down last month Jeff Triplett, who suggested the panel should wait but the city rejected his resignation on until an investigation into Lee's handling of the Monday case is completed before deciding his professional fate. "I'm not ready to have him come back and run the police department, but I don't know if I'm ready for this either," the mayor said. The Miami Herald reports that Darren Scott, the police captain who has been serving as acting police chief since Lee stepped aside last month, will stay on in that role while the city continues its search for an interim police chief. In the meantime, Lee will remain on salary while on leave from his job, according to the New York Times. The same city commission who voted to reject Lee's resignation Monday issued a vote of no confidence in him last month, criticizing how his department handled the investigation into Martin's death. That vote was also decided 3-2, with Triplett likewise serving as the decisive vote. At the time, there were widespread demonstrations calling for the arrest of George

Fayes Small Business and Entrepreneurship

BY FAYE WATSON

The Organized Path

Have you ever woke up and wished that you could turn back the hands of time? Some business owners do it every day carrying a long list of issues in their heads which divert attention from focusing on their core business. Im willing to bet that disorganization is the root cause of many of the problems faced by small business owners and Faye Watson to be honest individuals struggling to create some structure in their lives. Experience has taught me that the frustration associated with clutter and disorganization can consume your life. Some argue that things look disorganized but they know where everything is. To that I say bull! And even if you think you know where everything is, how long will it take you to find it? For some the answer is hours and for others its days, weeks, months and Im willing to bet never. Disorganization is the trigger that fires the bullet of unnecessary waste of time and money. And if youre like most people stress and frustration are symptoms of disorganization. As a business owner you might consider that disorganization is costly. You could incur late fees on bills that got misplaced, lose a business card of a potential customer, important contract, customer request for service, receipts for items you need to return for cash and the list goes on and on. But one of the most important things you can lose is time. You cannot get back the time you waste dealing with disorganization. Whether its time you could spend with your family and friends or time you can spend focusing on you, time is one of your most valued resources. Unlike money, which can be made on the next business venture if this one does not work, time cannot be replaced no matter what you do. And stress and frustration can take time off of your life. What would you do with the additional time you gained because you no longer waste it looking for important documents or supplies you misplaced and had to replace in order to complete a task? There are thousands of individuals suffocating from a mile high stock pile of clutter and disorganization. Not only are they living in a cluttered environment but their minds are cluttered which may lead to poor decisions or worse indecision. Take a moment today and look around your life. No two lives are exactly alike yet all of our lives have something in common. We all stand on the same moment in time. If you do nothing else this year I would like to recommend that you get organized. Whether its your business or personal life the time is now to change your attitude and take action. We are all products of our personal experiences, guided by what we have been taught. While I do not know the foundation for all of you, many of us turn to the bible for guidance. Ephesians 4:22-23 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds. That brings about another point of discussion. If you dont have a will, get one! If you havent had a physical get one! If you dont have a life, get one! This journey on earth is the only journey you have no matter how you view it. Dont be so embarrassed by your current situation that you dont get help. At a minimum spend a few dollars and get some ideas as to what you can do to create an organized path. One conversation could change your life. Contact me if you need help getting organized in your home or office, bookkeeping services, QuickBooks training or creating an accounting system for your business. Im interested in your comments. The Road To Success Is Never Traveled Alone Tip of the week: When you look in the mirror you see a reflection of who you are on the outside but the real reflection rest on the inside of our minds, homes, businesses, relationships and views of the life you live and the world you live in.

Trina Braxton Signs Divorce Papers

Pilar Sanders Out on Bail; Denies Attacking Husband Deion

FROM STAFF REPORTERS

Deion Sanders estranged wife Pilar is denying accusations that she attacked her famous husband at their home and said shes not getting a fair shake because of his stature in the community as a former star player for the Dallas Cowboys. Pilar Sanders, a model who has appeared on several television shows, including a 2008 Oxygen network reality series about her and her famous husbands home life, Deion & Pilar: Prime Time Love, was released Tuesday after spending the night in jail on a misdemeanor domestic assault charge. A magistrate judge ordered her stay away from their home in the Dallas suburb of Prosper for 60 days and barred her from threatening or harassing her husband, KTVT-TV reported. Addressing reporters outside Collin County Jail, Pilar denied her husbands allegations, that she and one of her friends attacked him in front of their children in his room on Monday. Im a full-time mom, 100 percent for my children, Sanders said, her voice breaking. And Pilar Sanders - mug shot I just havent been given a fair shake. Deion Sanders, who played for five NFL teams and is now an NFL Network analyst, filed for divorce in December, and the breakup has been anything but smooth. The couple has three children together and Deion Sanders has two from a former marriage. Pilar Sanders is suing her husband, his daughter from his first marriage, Deiondra Sanders, and a business, Prime Time Enterprise Inc., for $200 million in damages. That case is scheduled to go to trial in September. She is also suing her husbands aunt, Laura Jones, alleging Jones assaulted her in February, according to the Dallas Morning News. Larry Friedman, Pilar Sanders divorce attorney, said Tuesday that he cant comment about her arrest because there is a gag order in the divorce case. I can tell you that there are two sides to every story and the truth will come out in court, he said in a statement.

Trina Braxton is staying true to her word and has filed for divorce from her husband Gabe Solis. FROM STAFF REPORTS

Their relationship fell apart in front of the world on Braxton Family Values. As Solis continues to battle sex addiction, Braxton committed herself to being there for him and the children, despite their differences. As far as the status of Gabe and I, I have filed for divorce. However, we are being very adult about it, said Trina. We are talking, we are still raising the children together and we are still praying about his sex addiction therapy that hes going to a counselor for. She admitted, however, one of the biggest struggles for their relationship has been the show. Being that their lives are taped around the clock, it was difficult keeping their business private and their struggles to themselves. Were doing a lot of praying and a lot of keeping outside influences away from our decision making, Trina shared. I think thats one of the biggest mistakes weve made through the seasons of Braxton Family Values. In the meantime, shes focusing on her career and children. But she does know what she wants in her next man. She says a God-fearing man with a little leeway would fit the bill just nice, and he must get along with her children.

Three boys are in the school yard bragging about their fathers. The first boy says, My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a poem, they give him $50. The second boy says, Thats nothing. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a song, they give him $100. The third boy says, I got you both beat. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a sermon... and it takes eight people to collect all the money!

Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.

CHARLIE WILSON TEAMS UP WITH JANSSEN BIOTECH TO LAUNCH MAKING AWARENESS A PRIORITY (M.A.P.)
BY BOD DAVIS

MOVIE REVIEW ACT LIKE A LADY Think Like A Man

BY WILFRED PHILLIPS

Legendary R&B Musician and Prostate Cancer Survivor Lends His Voice to Build Prostate Cancer Awareness in the African-American Community HORSHAM, Pa., April 2, 2012 - Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, producer and prostate cancer survivor Charlie Wilson and Janssen Biotech, Inc. are teaming up on Making Awareness a Priority: Putting Prostate Cancer on the M.A.P., a new program designed to raise awareness among African-American men and their families about prostate cancer and its disproportionate impact on the African-American community. With the highest incidence of prostate cancer of any race in the U.S., African-American men are 2.4 times more likely to die from the disease than Caucasian men. Making Awareness a Priority (M.A.P.) brings together leading voices in advocacy and health education through live events in select cities across the country. In recognition of National Minority Health Month and National Minority Cancer Charlie Wilson Awareness Week, the program kicks off on April 21 in Atlanta, Georgia with program resources available online at My Prostate Cancer Roadmap (www.myprostatecancerroadmap.com). Charlie Wilson was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008. "At first, I never wanted to talk about my cancer. Then I realized that after spending a lot of my life performing, it was time to start informing. That's why I am continuing to raise my voice to help those with prostate cancer by joining with Janssen Biotech, Inc. in the Making Awareness a Priority program - to encourage African-American men to understand their risk factors for prostate cancer and start a conversation with their loved ones and doctors about this serious and deadly disease." The average annual prostate cancer incidence rate in the U.S. was 60% higher in African-American men than in Caucasian men between 2003 and 2007. Factors including family history, access to medical care and relevant support networks may contribute to the disproportionate impact. In addition to being at higher risk for prostate cancer, according to research of the impact of cultural factors on African-American men's understanding of prostate cancer, these men often believe they do not have access to information about prostate cancer that takes into account their diverse values, beliefs, behaviors and social and cultural needs. M.A.P. will address these issues head-on through informational and wellness events offering African-American men and their loved ones the opportunity to learn about prostate cancer risks and information and support resources available to them. The three-city tour of Atlanta, New York City and Chicago is sponsored by Janssen Biotech, Inc. and held in partnership with locally-based community organizations in these markets. Real Men Charities, Inc., the national not-for-profit organization, presents Real Men CookR Father's Day events as a national crusade to positively change the way the world views men in relationship to their families and the community. The Abyssinian Baptist Church in the City of New York, the oldest black Baptist church in the nation, is well-known for its leadership, social activism initiatives, and community reform programs to educate and empower its members and the Harlem community at large. "When I first learned I had prostate cancer, I thought my career was over. I thought it was a wrap for me," said Wilson, but his wife quickly proved to be his greatest supporter. "My wife stood tall and told me we were going to get through it. You just have to have a positive heart and go on. That's what we did and now I want others to know about the resources that are available to them." At each event, Wilson will share his personal experience with prostate cancer and will be joined by Stanley K. Frencher Jr., MD, MPH, who through his work encourages African-American men to proactively speak with their doctors about prostate cancer, as well as journalist and author Andrea King Collier. As a strong advocate for empowering African-American women to take an active role in managing their loved ones' health, Collier will emcee the events and share insights from her book, The Black Woman's Guide to Black Men's Health. The program also includes interactive prostate cancer information, resources and a cooking demonstration with healthy, cancer-wise food choices. "African-American men are at a greater risk for prostate cancer and it is important that we support the African-American community with information that is both relevant and compelling," said Robert Bazemore, President, Janssen Biotech, Inc. "Janssen Biotech is pleased to join Charlie Wilson and our local community partners to provide those who are at high-risk of, or living with, prostate cancer with the resources they need to help them navigate all aspects of their cancer journey." To register for an event or to find out more about Making Awareness a Priority, including live event dates and locations, visit www.myprostatecancerroadmap.com. The website is a unique educational and support resource for men with advanced prostate cancer and their loved ones sponsored by Janssen Biotech, Inc. in conjunction with the non-profit organization Us TOO International Prostate Cancer Education & Support Network (www. ustoo.org). About Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer occurs when cancer cells form in the tissues of the prostate gland. Normally, cells within the prostate grow, divide, and die to make sure the prostate functions properly and are then replaced by new cells. Prostate cancer occurs when the prostate cells stop functioning normally. These cells with uncontrolled growth don't die as they should, creating a buildup of cells known as a tumor. Prostate cancer can occur as a slow-growing tumor to a very aggressive and potentially fatal disease that spreads throughout the body.

The long awaited movie from Steve Harveys best seller, Act Like A Lady-Think like a Man is not only a box office hit but this movie has made a substantial profit. The storyline of this movie is much like his book, as all cast members end up reading it. Act Like A Lady-Think like a Man is much more than a how too movie, but a movie with a strong message for all females as well as males. In today society where many relationships often go astray do to the various wrong choices that we do make. We have somewhere lost the respect for one another. The movie Act Like A Lady-Think like A Man also depicts how most men think, and what drives them to do the things that they do. The roles of these superbly casted actors such as Chris Brown, Michael Ealy, and actresses, Gabrelle Union, Megan Good, and Regina Hall, and Taraji P.Henson, defines different situations in todays lifestyles. The 3 things that every man needs. Support, Loyalty, and the all important cookie. The movie clarifies what it means to a man when a woman says, We need to talk. And ladies! there is super advice about dating a man and to know how serious he is about you. Ask him about his long and short term goals, is he a realist, or is hes just a dreamer. Is he Steve Haravey willing to meet with your children and family? Steve Harvey makes several cameo appearances when the movie switches to freeze frame as he recommends the dos and donts. There is a segment called Sport Fishing, and the Trophy Cases. The film touches on The Mamas Boy, THE 90 DAY BENEFIT PLAN, and the so-called CHERP CHERP MAN. Funny man, Kevin Hart, who is always giving his YMCA basketball buddies bad information on dating, goes up against former LA Sparks center, Lisa Leslie, Metta World Peace, of the LA Lakers and other NBA notables who gives him and his buddies, a hilarious lesson in respect on the court. The ending is very touching as each couple comes together with the knowledge that deep down inside the love and respect that they have for one another. I recommend Act Like A lady-Think like a Man to all, and it will be a must for my DVD collection. After the movie was over, I got feed back from some theater goers. It was either you love Mr. Harvey or you hate him. Thanks Steve, I commend your courage. You have a well written book and a terrific powerful movie. It was a major learning experience.

The L.A. Riots: 15 Years After Rodney King

FROM STAFF REPORTERS

The riots left more than 50 dead, over 4,000 were injured and cost $1 billion in property damage.
LOS ANGELES, CA - While driving down the 210 freeway in Los Angeles with two friends, Rodney King was detected speeding by the California Highway Patrol. Fearing that his probation for a robbery offense would be revoked because of the traffic violation, King led the CHP on a high-speed chase, eventually hitting 115 miles per hour, according to the police. By the time he was caught and ordered to exit his vehicle, several L.A.P.D. squad cars had arrived on the scene. A struggle ensued, and some of the officers quickly decided that King was resisting arrest. Sergeant Stacey Koon fired Rodney King pleads to the rioters to make two shots into King with a TASER gun, and peace May 1, 1992 in Los Angeles, CA after that failed to subdue him, the officers, including Laurence Powell, beat him mercilessly with their batons. The incident was videotaped by a man named George Holliday, who lived nearby, and it didn't take long for the tape to send shockwaves around the world and enrage the already frustrated Los Angeles African American community, which felt that racial profiling and abuse by the police had long gone unchecked. His sudden fame didnt make things much easier for King. He did win $3.8 million in damages from the City of Los Angeles for the beating incident, but much of it went into starting a rap record label, Straight Alta-Pazz Records, which soon folded. King has managed to maintain high spirits, and that he is living once again in Los Angeles, helping to run a family-owned construction company and doting on his granddaughter.

A Womans Guide to Depression

Women are 2-3 times more likely than men to develop depression or an anxiety disorder. Blame hormones, genetics and stress, experts say. Find out how being female affects mental health, what kinds of questions are asked to diagnose illness and which treatments are available. Plus, could you be depressed? Take our quiz to find out... Like their bodies, mens and womens brains and minds are mostly alike, but they do differ in some significant ways. These brain differences arise from both our genes and from environmental factors that include family, culture and experience. There is no neat line between biology and psychology. When our brains undergo change, because of an experience or medication, our thoughts and feelings change as well. When our thoughts and feelings change, as a result of life experience or psychotherapy, our brains undergo change. Culture also interacts with our biology and psychology. For example, different cultures have different traditions about how they understand menopause, and those traditions influence the way symptoms are expressed. Why Your Sex Matters Sex differences in the brain and the evidence of mental illness on brain scans help to steer research in the most promising directions, but brain scans cannot yet make a diagnosis. Mental disorders are diagnosed on the basis of feelings, thoughts and behaviors. Therefore, our ideas about normal feelings, thoughts and behaviors play an important role in our concept of some mental disorders. What we view as normal is often closely related to our gender. For example, we generally expect women to be more passive and dependent than men, and we are more tolerant of mens anger and aggression than we are of womens. When men or women deviate from expected behaviors, even when they are fully able to function and are not troubled by symptoms, there is a tendency to consider them abnormal. Womens mental and physical symptoms are often taken less seriously than mens. Women who have alcohol problems tend to drink quietly at home rather than getting drunk and violent in a tavern. A belligerent alcoholic man attracts more attention than a depressed and withdrawn woman. Women are more likely to receive prescriptions for psychiatric medications, perhaps because they make more visits to health care providers and suffer more chronic illnesses during their longer life spans. It is important to remember that medication can be used both too often and not often enough. Some prescriptions are written before a thorough diagnosis is made. Alternatively, many people who could benefit from medication are not being treated with it. Mental Health and Women Women suffer from depression and anxiety disorders two or three times more often than men. The differences are due to a combination of genetics, hormones and stressful experiences. Stress is a universal human experience that can be positive and negative. Many life changes, like getting married or having a baby, are both stressful and positive. Stress causes changes in our behavior, thoughts and feelings, as well as in our body functions: heart rate, digestion and breathing. Stress that is not overwhelming can be beneficial to our growth and creativity, but stress that is overwhelming can make us vulnerable to mental and other illnesses. Some forms of stress are more common in women than in men: poverty, sexual abuse and assault, and domestic violence. Jobs traditionally filled by women, such as secretarial work, nursing and teaching, that have a high level of responsibility and a low level of power, raise a persons risk of depression. Women are also more likely to experience sexual harassment, which can increase their risk of anxiety and depression. Stressful experiences like illness, abandonment and disasters cause bodily changes, sadness, irritability, relationship problems and, sometimes, mental disorders. Mental disorders can also occur for no apparent reason. Domestic violence is a factor in many kinds of mental illnesses. Women have often been blamed for their own victimization. One would hear questions like, Why didnt she leave? or What did she do to deserve it? As a society, we have begun to recognize the criminal nature of domestic violence and to develop legal and other support systems that recognize its impact. Doctors need to be aware of domestic violence and ask appropriate questions at every visit. Women are often ashamed of being victims, and it may take several visits before a woman feels comfortable enough to reveal her situation to her health care provider. These questions have to be asked in private because abusers often stick close to their victims during medical visits and punish them if they reveal the truth. We have also learned a great deal about coping with stress, particularly through social support networks. Women who suffer from infertility, depression or cancer are less likely to become depressed when they have strong support systems and/or they can join a group of others with similar experiences. A natural disaster is often easier to bear than a rape or assault because others are present and there is mutual support. Being active and helping others is the best way to overcome feelings of helplessness and powerlessness. People with mental illnesses suffer more discrimination and have more difficulty obtaining health care than people with other kinds of illnesses. This is particularly true of schizophrenia, alcohol and substance abuse, and depression. There is a tendency to believe that these conditions can be overcome by determination and prayer. While both determination and prayer can be very useful in overcoming diseases, they are not treatments. A person with a disease should not be blamed for his or her own suffering. For example, some states in the United States have put pregnant women with alcohol and substance abuse problems in jail, ignoring the fact that many of them desire treatment. As a result, women with these treatable medical conditions are afraid to seek prenatal care for fear of punishment. Diagnosing Mental Illness An accurate diagnosis is the basis for successful treatment of any disorder. A health provider should ask, and a patient should be prepared to report: 1. What are your symptoms now? 2. What is the history of your symptoms? Under what circumstances did they start? How long have you had them? How have they changed? What has made them worse or better? What treatments have you had, and how did they work? 3. What is your personal history? Who is in your family? How was it for you growing up? Any problems? What and how did you do in school? What kinds of relationships have you had? 4. What is your sexual history? What were you taught? What do you know? What are your past and current sexual practices and concerns? 5. What is your family history, especially of similar symptoms? If others in your family had them, what, if anything, helped them? 6. What is your social history? Jobs? Personal habits like smoking, drinking, drugs? Marital/ relationship status? Religion and spirituality? 7. What is your medical history? Reproductive history: When you started menstruating, any problems? Birth control? Conceptions? Abortions? Miscarriages? Pregnancies and deliveries? Sexually transmitted diseases? Illnesses? Surgeries? Hospitalizations? Past and current medications? A complete mental health examination also includes a brief test of your mental functions: alertness, memory, concentration, abstraction, and level of general knowledge. Treatment Overall, mental health care is as effective as other kinds of medical care. All health care providers should spend time talking with patients, but in mental health, talking therapy or psychotherapy has developed into a specialized skill. For most mental illnesses, a combination of psychotherapy and medication works best. Several different types of clinicians psychiatrists, social workers, psychologists, counselors provide several kinds of psychotherapy: supportive, psychodynamic, interpersonal and cognitive-behavioral.

John Edwards' Trial Kicks Off With Witness Revelation

A former aide at the center of the trial reached out to other witnesses to discuss testimony, according to the presiding judge.
John Edwards faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted on campaign finance violations
FROM STAFF REPORTS

John Edwards' trial for campaign finance violations kicked off in North Carolina on Monday with prosecutors painting a picture of a man who would stop at nothing in his bid to become president. The Associated Press reports that the biggest revelation from Day One of proceedings was that former Edwards aide Andrew Young expected to be the government's chief witness reached out to other witnesses in the case ahead of the trial to ask about what they planned to say on the stand, a possible violation of federal law. You can read more about that development here. Edwards faces six counts of campaign finance violations for allegedly using $1 million from two wealthy donors to keep the affair that ultimately derailed his political career a secret during his 2008 presidential campaign. The 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee, however, contends that the money was given by friends trying to prevent his wife from learning of the affair, not keeping it secret to further his presidential aspirations, Politico reports. Edwards' team also contends that much of the money in question wasn't even used to support John Edwards his pregnant mistress, and was instead siphoned off by Young and his wife to build a $1.5 million dream home. Young had initially claimed paternity when reports first surfaced that the mistress, Rielle Hunter, was pregnant with Edwards' child. Edwards' wife died of breast cancer in 2010. As the New York Times explains, the final verdict is likely to come down to whom the jury believes more: Edwards or Young, who has been granted immunity in this trial and will testify for the prosecution. The judge ruled Monday that the defense team could tell the jury about Young's contact with the other witnesses but cannot refer to it as "witness tampering." Hunter is also on the witness list for both the prosecution and defense. It is unclear whether Edwards, a former trial lawyer, will testify, and to what extent he will participate in his defense. If convicted, Edwards faces up to 30 years in prison and $1.5 million in fines.

GOP Investigates Possible White House Link to Prostitution Scandal

Chuck Grassley wonders who else was involved in the night of partying that has cost six Secret Service agents their jobs.
FROM WHITE HOUSE STAFF REPORTERS

Can the Secret Service prostitution controversy be connected to President Obama's White House? Sen. Chuck Grassley wants to know.

Members of the U.S. Secret Service

CNN reports that Grassley, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, asked the Secret Service in a letter on Friday if their investigation into a prostitution scandal in Columbia involves looking into possible connections to two White House offices, the White House Communications Agency and the White House Office of Advance. In the letter addressed to Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan and Acting Inspector General Charles Edwards, Grassley asked if White House staffers reserved or shared rooms with the Secret Service while in Colombia. His call for a widened investigation was backed up by Sen. Joseph Lieberman on Sunday. The Senate Homeland Security chairman told Fox News that "its a reasonable question" to ask about possible White House involvement in the scandal. But asked whether Obama should be held responsible for the prostitution scandal, Lieberman offered a nuanced response, saying that it "would be unfair to hold President Obama responsible for this outrageous behavior by the Secret Service" but that "it is fair to hold a president accountable." The scandal involving service members and Secret Service agents hiring prostitutes in Colombia has resulted in six Secret Service agents losing their jobs. A total of 22 men from the Secret Service and the military are suspected of having participated in a night of partying in Colombia two nights before President Obamas scheduled visit to Cartagena for an international summit. The agents were part of an advance team preparing for the president's arrival.

Attorney General Kamala D. Harris Announces Passage of Bills to Combat Human Trafficking
FROM STAFF REPORTERS

s m Sa s t or Sp
Samantha Richardson

SACRAMENTO -- Attorney General Kamala D. Harris announced two bills in the fight against human trafficking passed out of legislative committees today. The vote comes during National Crime Victims' Rights Week, an opportunity to remember victims and advocate for victims' rights. One bill will aid in recovering money for victims of human trafficking and the second bill will require that predators convicted of even one instance of sex trafficking of a minor forfeit any profits earned from their crimes. This legislative package continues Attorney General Harris' commitment to fighting human trafficking. As District Attorney of San Francisco, she co-sponsored the California Human Trafficking Victims Protection Act of Attorney General 2005, which first made human trafficking Kamala D. Harris a felony. Since taking office, she has convened meetings across the state with law enforcement agencies, NGOs and victim advocates to assess the status of human trafficking efforts in California and determine next steps. Attorney General Harris has also launched a website to connect various anti-trafficking groups across the state and provide tools to help Californians identify and report human trafficking in their communities. The website also has help for victims available in 18 languages. "Human trafficking is a criminal industry that is expanding rapidly across the globe, including here in California," Attorney General Harris said. "I am proud to sponsor these bills against human trafficking and am committed to this fight. The same transnational gangs that traffic drugs and guns across our border also traffic human beings and we must counter their threat." The first bill, Senate Bill 1133 (Support for Victims of Human Trafficking), prevents all criminals convicted of sex trafficking minors from retaining any financial benefits from their participation in this crime. The bill authorizes the forfeiture of defendant property upon proof of only one instance of sex trafficking of a minor, as opposed to more than one instance under current law. The bill also expands the scope of property subject to forfeiture and provides a formula to redirect these resources to organizations that provide treatment and services for victims of human trafficking. It passed the Senate Public Safety Committee today on a 7 to 0 vote. "Sex trafficking of minors is a horrendous crime that is driven by the prospect of lucrative profits," said Senator Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, author of SB 1133. "This legislation aims to deprive convicted criminals of the financial resources and assets that would allow them to continue luring young people into the sex trade. In turn, proceeds from those forfeitures would rightfully be used to help victims begin to repair their lives." Jenny Williamson, founder of Courage to be You, an organization that has a long-term residential home for human trafficking victims, testified in support of the bill. "The perpetrators of these young girls keep all proceeds, and when the girls come to us, they have nothing but the clothes on their back they were used to sell their bodies for," she said. "So as a provider of victim services, we take on all those expenses for these victims." The second bill, Assembly Bill 2466 (Preservation of Assets for Victims of Human Trafficking), will require that more victims of human trafficking receive restitution. Under California law, victims are entitled to mandatory restitution; however there are no laws to help prevent human trafficking defendants from liquidating and hiding their assets before conviction. Assembly Bill 2466 would allow a court to order the preservation of the assets and property by persons charged with human trafficking. The bill passed the Assembly Judiciary Committee today on unanimous vote. "Trafficking is slavery and it's a growing problem right here in California," said Bob Blumenfield, D-San Fernando Valley, author of AB 2466. "We must give prosecutors the tools they need to confront this despicable crime and bring justice to victims, including the restitution they need to rebuild their lives. Passing my bill into law will help accomplish that." Human trafficking is slavery, and unlike the slavery of the past, this modern form of slavery is a hidden crime. It is estimated to be a $9 billion worldwide industry, with more than 14,500 individuals trafficked each year into the United States. The trafficking is often done by transnational gangs that transport guns, drugs and human beings across the border into California. For additional information, visit the Attorney General's Human Trafficking in California website at http://oag.ca.gov/human-trafficking.

The National Football Draft League

BY SAMANTHA RICHARDSON, SPORTS WRITER/REPORTER

The basic design of the draft is that each team is given a position in the drafting order in reverse order relative its record in the previous yearthe last place gets positioned first. With this position, the team can either select a player or trade their position to another team for other positions, a player, or players, or any combination thereof. After each team had utilized its position in the drafting order, whether by trading it or selecting a player, a round would be complete. Teams that reached the playoffs the previous season are then slotted in the order in which they were eliminated as indicated in the table below. Within each tier, the slotting is determined as above (i.e. worst record picks first and the same tiebreakers apply).
