The Assesment Of English Achievment Programme 2007 Rational Bearing in mind that of our pupils do not excel in the

English paper, the English Panel has come up with this programme with the intention of boosting the pupils command of the English Language and upgrading the Year Six pupils achievement in the UPSR English Paper. Objectives The objectives of this programme are : i. to realize the schools vision of 100% passes in the UPSR English paper, ii. to achieve the school target of achieving 74.39% passes in the 2008 UPSR English paper, iii. to have as many pupils as possible obtaining A in the UPSR English paper, iv. to minimize the percentage of failures in the English paper, and v. to motivate the pupils to learn and to love the language through English related activities. Target This programme is targeted for all the pupils in the school. Strategies Some of the strategies that the panel has come up with are : 1. Extra classes for all the Year 6 pupils to start in January 2007 till a week before UPSR. 2. Intensive classes / Elite class for 20 selected pupils between June to August. 3. Frequent exposure to the format of the UPSR English paper Once a week Through past year questions and selected sets of questions taken from reference book. 4. Reinforce the important items and grammatical skills taught in class through formative tests to check on pupils understanding of what is being taught. 5. Enrichment exercises throughout the week for pupils who have mastered the topics or items taught to widen their knowledge and enrich their learning experiences. 6. Remedial considerations for weaker pupils in the form of extra coaching, extra attention and easier tasks once a week. 7. Self Assess Learning (SAL) using cards or selected materials under teachers supervision when pupils are ready for it. 8. Planned homework everyday to reinforce items and skills taught in the classroom.

9. Frequent evaluation in the form of monthly test to monitor pupils progress in mastering the English Language. 10. Post-mortem on the evaluations results to detect and overcome pupils area of weakness. 11. Peer group teaching where good pupils are paired with the weaker pupils to enable the weaker pupils to get some guidance and help from the good pupils. 12. Occasional meeting between teachers and parents to form a close rapport to identify and solve any existing problems and to enable the parents to unde4rstand the schools vision and strategies in the teaching and learning of the language. 13. Mentor-Mentee Project to foster good relationship between teacher and pupil to break the teacher-pupil barrier so that pupils will feel free to voice out their problems and to enable the teacher to guide them. 14. English Society and English Week as a venue for pupils to use the language through activities such as quiz, reading, chants and story telling. 15. Language Camp where pupils are encouraged to use the language in planned activities. 16. Exposure to answering techniques to enable pupils to sore in the English paper. 17. Frequent informal discussions between the English teachers, Buddy teachers and ETEMS teachers to overcome problems in carrying out the teaching and learning of Mathematics and Science in English Conclusion The panel hopes that all these strategies will boost the pupils command of the language and bring about a better English environment in the school.
