The first year with Jolly Phonics

The majority of children should:

1st Term / Semester

know how to read and write the 42 letter sounds. be able to blend regular words made from the 42 letter sounds. be able to write regular words, by listening for the sounds, using the 42 letter sounds. read the tricky words 1 15. be able to start reading simple sentences. know the sounds of the capital letters.

2nd Term / Semester

be able to write three or more sentences independently. be familiar with the main alternative spellings of the vowels for reading and writing. read tricky words 1 50. know how to spell tricky words 1 - 20. be able to read simple books or stories (preferably the Jolly Readers, which have controlled vocabulary) one a day (roughly 8 12 pages). be able to form the capital letters correctly, as well as say their sounds and names. be able to recite the alphabet and know the letter names.

3rd Term / Semester

be developing much greater fluency in their reading. be able to apply the rule for reading If the short vowel doesn't work try the long vowel'. be able to write longer stories or news at this stage the spelling improves through reading many books and knowing the main alternative ways of writing the vowels. be writing in a neat, well formed style (preferably cursive). be able to read tricky words 1 60 and know how to spell many of them.
