OntheweekendofJuly6th8th,theWoodfield CompositeSquadronhostedabivouacatRockCutstate parkinnorthernIllinois.Thepurposeofthisactivity wastotraincadetsinbasicemergencyservicestasks. ThebivouacwasalsopartofanoverallfundedAir ForceassignedmissionwithaUnitedStatesAirForce assignedmissionnumber. WithsevencadetspresentfromWoodfieldComposite Squadron,thetaskscompletedwereacompasscourse, buildingashelter,mapwork,usingLperstolocateELT beacons,andaircraftsignalcoordination. Seniormembersinattendancefortrainingthecadets were,1Lt.SaltaresESOfromtheWoodfieldSquadron, Maj.PicektheILGroup14CommanderandMaj. KalemisfromGreatLakesRegion.

TheBlanikgliderbeingreceivedhasbeenusedbythe AirForceAcademyforthepastseveralyearsandwillbe inadditiontotheSchweizer233currentlybeingused. Consideredoneoftheworldsmostcommonbasic trainingsailplanestheL23isanallmetal,twoseat, dualcontrol,highwingedgliderwithretractablemain wheelandafixedtailwheel.Itsonepiececanopy designallowsforexcellentvisibility.Radiosandflight instrumentsareavailableinbothcockpits. CivilAirPatrolusesgliderstointroduceyouthtoflight throughitscadetorientationprogram.Theopportunity toflyisamajorattractionforcadets,ofwhominthe areaof26,000receivedorientationflightsinthe organizationspoweredaircraftandgliderslastyear. ThreeglideracademiesareofferedbyCivilAirPatrol eachsummeratdifferentlocationsintheU.S.These academiesarespecificallydesignedforcadetswho wanttolearntofly.Participantsreceiveformalground instructionandcockpittimewithacertifiedflight instructor.Somecadetsgettheopportunitytosolo. AsarecentrecipientoftheEakerAward,cadet Basraouihasbecomethe3rdcadetinthepast8yearsto earntherankofC/LtCol.atWoodfieldComposite Squadron.Duringhistimewiththesquadronhehas servedasthe2012CadetDeputyCommanderatthe IllinoisWingSummerEncampment,Chairpersonforthe IllinoisWingCadetAdvisoryCouncil,andtheWoodfield CompositeSquadronCadetCommander. CadetBasraouiiscurrentlyanAFROTCcadetandhas sethissightsonthenextandmostprominentawardfor acadetintheCivilAirPatrol,theSpaatzaward.Since 2004only2cadetshaveearnedtheSpaatzawardat WoodfieldCompositeSquadronandsince1964only 1,837haveearnedtheawardinallofCAP. AsCadetBasraouisCadetCommanderrolecomestoan endinAugust,heissteppingintoanexcitingnewrole, representingGreatLakesRegionattheNationalCadet AdvisoryCounsel.

OpenSquadronPositionAEO
WoodfieldCompositeSquadronhasanopenofficer position,AerospaceEducationOfficer(AEO).This positionisopentoexistingCAPmembersaswellas newmembersinterestedinvolunteeringtheirtimeto furtherAerospaceEducation.CivilAirPatrolhas extensivetrainingmaterialsandopportunitiesavailable toensurethesuccessofanyonefillingthisposition. TheAerospaceEducation(AE)specialtytrackis dedicatedtopreparingCAPmembersforthe responsibilitiesofbecomingCAPAerospaceEducation Officers(AEO)atalllevelsoftheorganization,including squadrons,groups,wings,andregions.Thespecialty guideforthispositionprovidesaerospaceeducation informationandtrainingthatwillenhancethe candidatesknowledgeofandperformanceinthe aerospaceeducationofficerpositioninCAP.

ForyearstheWoodfieldCompositeSquadronhashada dynamicgliderprogramandthisyearisnodifferent. WiththreeorientationgliderpilotsMaj.StevenSnyder, Capt.JohnBakerandSMMikeVaughn,thelattertwo whicharealsoinstructors,thesquadronprovidesflights formultiplesquadronsinIllinoisandisactiveat JohnsonFlightAcademyeachyear. WhilecadetsreceivefivegliderflightsforfreeinCivil AirPatrol,anarrangementwithSkySoaringin Hampshire,ILallowsCAPmembers,seniorandcadet, toflyfor$35perpullwithnoclubmembershipfee. ThisbenefitaffordsCAPmembersoneofthemost economicalwaystoexperienceflyanywhere.
