B.Tech IV Year II Semester Examinations, April/May-2012 ADVANCED STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 80 Answer any five questions All questions carry equal marks --Analyze the Portal frame shown in figure 1. The end P is fixed and Q is hinged. The member RS is loaded with 3kN/m uniformly distributed load. EI is constant. [16]

Fig:1 2. A portal frame PQRS is hinged at P and S and the Joints Q and R are rigid. The frame is loaded as shown in figure 2. Using the method of minimum strain energy, analyse the frame and Plot the Bending Moment Diagram. [16]

Fig:2 3. Four wheel loads of 5kN, 6kN, 4kN, 8kN cross a 20 m girder from left to right followed by udl of 3kN/m of 2m long. The 8kN load is leading and the spacing of all the loads is 2m each. The udl head is at 3m from the last 5 kN load. Using influence lines, calculate the SF and BM at a section 8m from the left support where 6 kN load is at the centre of the girder? [16]

A parabolic arch hinged at springings and crown has a span of 20 m. The central use is 4m. It is loaded with a udl of intensity 2kN/m on left 4m length. Calculate: a) The magnitude and direction of reactions at hinges. b) The bending moment, normal thrust and shear at 6m and 16m from the left end and maximum positive and negative bending moments. [16] Determine the value of w at collapse, for a three span continuous beam of constant Mp which is loaded as shown in the figure 5. [16]

Explain the term Influence Lines. Discuss the uses and principles of influence lines. Two point loads of 40 kN and 80 kN, spaced 3m apart moving from left to right cross a girder of 12m span with 40 kN load leading, Find the value of maximum bending moment under the 80 kN load on the girder. [16] Explain about linear arch. A symmetrical three pinned parabolic arch has a span of 50m and a rise of 25m. Find the maximum bending moment at a quarter point of the arch caused by a UDL of 10kN per meter which can occupy any portion of the span. Indicate the position of the load for this condition. [16] Using flexibility method analyzes the continuous beam shown in figure 5. [16]

A train of five wheel loads, as shown in figure 3 crosses a simply supported beam of 24m. Calculate the maximum positive and negative shear force values at the centre of the beam and the absolute maximum BM any where in the span.[16]

A three hinged parabolic arch has a span of 40m and central rise of 8m. Five wheel loads of 40,40,60,60 and 50 kN spaced 2,3,2 and 3m in order cross an arch from left to right with 40 kN load leading. When the leading load is 25m from the left hinge, calculate the horizontal thrust on the arch. Also calculate the bending moment, normal, thrust and shear force at the section under the tail load. [16] Using flexibility method analyze the continuous beam shown in figure 5. [16]
