A. What factors prompted the large-scale migration of English men and women to America?

Include cultural, political, and economic motivations. (be sure to consider differences between Northern and Southern colonies) The large scale migration of English men and woman created a rapid growth to the new colonization taking place in America. English men and woman fled for many reasons but mostly do the economical hardships that inflation created. The inflation that took place from the late 15th till 17th centuries, was known as the Price Revolution. During this 150 year period; gold and silver where being brought from the Americas and flooding Englands economical system. Another development at the time contributing to the economic inflation was the success of the middle class society. The middle class at the time where known as the gentry. The gentry where non-noble land owners who were successful at renting out their property by offering shorter leases; thus keeping constant tenants unlike the aristocrats who required longer contracts. As the middle class families became more wealthy and the power of the once aristocrats dwindled, the House of Commons was produced. The commons requested a bigger role in the planning of taxation and other laws and policies. One policy which caused the peasants to be forced to poverty was known as the enclosure act. This act allowed farmers and landowners to enclose their lands making it even more difficult for peasants. The peasants wanted a fresh start and to try and use their skills and trades in the Americas. Many sold themselves into contracts and they were known as indentured servants. Other Yeomen were just looking for land to grow their families. More than 50,000 in all traveled to North America. Originally planned, London investors had wanted English to settle in the Virginia Area; and produce trade factories. This was not possible so the English migrated to the Chesapeake Bay areas and developed a Tobacco producing society. Another way which built on the American colonization was when Penn developed a government in which religious freedoms were allowed. It was also more of a democratic based government in which promoted political equality and land owning men could hold office. This appealed to Yeoman from the north-west midland on England, and they colonized in the Philidelphia region. 1.
