----------------------------------------------------------------A. OPERATING SYSTEM VERSIONS SUPPORTED ======================================= This special edition of Dis eeper is supported on Intel x86 (or compatible) platforms running Windows Vista only.

B. OVERVIEW OF DISKEEPER 9.0 ============================= Dis eeper 9.0 represents another step forward in defragmentation technology, with refinements to existing features and the addition of new options that are the result of Dis eeper Corporation s ongoing technical and mar et research. As in earlier versions, Dis eeper 9.0 is designed to solve fragmentation problems for everyone, from home users to huge enterprise IT departments. See the Table of Supported Operating Systems at the end of this Readme file for a chart of the different Dis eeper editions and the Windows versions each supports. The following list summarizes the most important Dis eeper features: o Wide Array of Dis eeper EditionsThe Dis eeper family of products offers specialized defragmentation of Windows operating systems ranging from Windows 95 through Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition.

Note that ranges of Supported Dis eeper

other editions of Dis eeper support different the Windows operating systems. See the Table of Operating Systems for a chart of the different editions and the Windows versions each supports.

o Descriptive InterfaceThe Dis eeper interface provides an intuitive and informative defragmentation experience. Common commands are grouped together in the Command pane, and a group of tabbed panes show you a wide variety of information. Dis eeper shows you the condition of your dis s, and provides suggestions for improving or maintaining your dis s. New in version 9.0 is the Performance Map tab. This tab shows a graphic representation of your dis similar to the Drive Map,with one major difference: It shows the extent of performance degradation on the dis instead of simply showing the fragmented files. For example, a large file in two or three fragments causes no significant performance loss. In this case, the Drive Map tab would display this file in red (since it is fragmented) but the Performance Map would display the same file in blue (since it is NOT affecting the performance of your computer). The Performance Map tab gives you a more accurate loo at the condition of the dis as it relates to the overall performance of your system. o Performance and Reliability AnalysisDis eeper collects and displays data regarding the performance and reliability of your dis volumes. This information allows you to be more proactive in the management and maintenance of your computers. Although the Dis eeper performance and reliability ratings and recommendations are the result of extensive research and testing, they are not absolute. However, they do provide a consistent guideline by which to measure the performance and reliability of your system. Keep in mind that your results may vary. It should be noted that the first performance analysis is based on pre-determined dis performance values measured as a part of dis performance research done by Dis eeper Corporation. To get a more accurate performance measurement of your actual dis s, Dis eeper must scan your drives to measure their performance. Since this measurement can briefly slow down your computer, this scan operation is disabled by default, but you can turn it on easily. The "Set performance data options" option is described in the Dis eeper help system. o Set It and Forget It OperationDis eeper is designed to operate without your intervention. Set a schedule for the times you want Dis eeper to run, then sit bac and let Dis eeper ta e care of your dis fragmentation. Of course, you can also run Dis eeper manually. o Smart SchedulingThis feature allows Dis eeper to automatically determine the optimum defragmentation schedule for each dis volume individually, and adjust that schedule as dis usage changes. o Secondary Schedules? Dis eeper supports two separate defragmentation schedules for

each of your dis volumes. This allows you to set one schedule for wee days, and another for wee ends. Or you can run low-priority defragmentation jobs during the day when the computer is active, and another, higher-priority job in the off-hours. o Selectable Run PriorityYou can select the Windows priority at which Dis eeper defragmentation jobs run. Set the priority independently for both "Set It and Forget It" and "Manual Defragmentation" jobs. o Frag Shield[TM]One situation that can impair the performance and reliability of your computer is fragmentation of the Master File Table (MFT) on NTFS volumes and your paging files. Since the operating system relies heavily on the MFT and paging file, the effect of fragmentation is often much greater than when a normal file is fragmented. Special measures must be ta en to defragment these files, so it is better to prevent their fragmentation in the first place. The Frag Shield feature helps you configure these critical system files optimally, to help eep them contiguous from the start. o I/O Smart[TM]This option ta es the concept of run priorities one step farther by throttling?(suspending) the defragmentation process whenever dis I/O activity is detected on a dis while it is being defragmented. This ensures the defragmentation process will be transparent to users, no matter how active the dis .

o Selectable Defragmentation MethodsDis eeper 9.0 gives you the choice of four different defragmentation methods -- each with benefits for specific circumstances. New in version 9.0 is the "Performance Defragmentation" method. This algorithm concentrates the defragmentation effort on the pieces of fragmented files that affect your dis performance the most. This method moves and defragments smaller file fragments, but does not attempt to move large file fragments, thus saving time and system resources. Large file fragments in two or three pieces have very little (if any) performance impact, but attempting to consolidate these large pieces into a single, contiguous piece can consume more resources than accessing the slightly-fragmented (or partially defragmented) file. o More Control for Non-Privileged UsersThe Dis eeper icon in the system status area (also nown as the system tray) can now be used by non-administrative users to postpone defragmentation operations. Users who are not members of the Administrators group can right-clic the Dis eeper system tray icon to delay a currently-running defragmentation operation.

Users who are members of the Administrators group can now use

the Dis eeper icon in the system tray to open the Dis eeper interface and have full control over Dis eeper operations. o Group Policy SupportDis eeper can be configured networ -wide with the Group Policy Editor provided with Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003. o Exclusion ListsDis eeper exclusion lists allow you to specify files and directories that will not be allowed to be processed by Dis eeper. o Event LoggingDis eeper allows you to record information about its activity in a log file. A wide variety of information can be saved for future reference. o Simultaneous Analysis or Defragmentation OperationsYou can analyze and/or defragment more than one dis volume at a time. Different Dis eeper editions support different numbers of simultaneous operations. See the Table of Dis eeper Editions in the Dis eeper Help for more information. o Boot-Time DefragmentationDefragment files at boot-time that cannot be moved safely when Windows is running. o Terabyte Volume EngineA Dis eeper exclusive, the Terabyte Volume Engine (TVE) is designed to efficiently defragment extremely large dis (>100 GB) volumes. This feature is available in selected Dis eeper Server editions. See the Table of Dis eeper Editions in the Dis eeper Help for a list of the Dis eeper editions with TVE support. o Support for Mounted VolumesDis eeper now supports mounted volumes (or letterless drives), which can be created on Windows 2000 and later operating systems. o 64-bit Processor SupportDis eeper is compatible with 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003. C. KNOWN RESTRICTIONS IN THIS RELEASE ======================================

2. Dis eeper needs to be able to access a file to defragment it. a) If a file on an NTFS volume does not grant FULL CONTROL to the SYSTEM logon, Dis eeper will not be able to defragment

1. Dis eeper needs access to the root display the volume in the GUI. Dis SYSTEM logon, so if an NTFS volume volume list, ma e sure that SYSTEM root directory of the volume.

it. b) If a file on an NTFS volume is open for update with an exclusive loc , Dis eeper will not be able to defragment it. You will need to shut down the application that has a file open in this mode in order to defragment it. 3. Although Dis eeper attempts to loc removable drives, some may not be loc able, or may eject anyway if the eject button is used. Data corruption may occur if you eject a removable dis while defragmentation is occurring on that dis . 4. When multiple dis volumes are scheduled to be defragmented with the same starting time, defragmentation is started on the volumes one at a time, with one-minute intervals between each starting time. This is by design. 5. If you install other software that also loads the MMC, be aware that the other product may install an older version of the MMC. If this occurs, Dis eeper may not operate correctly, and should be reinstalled. 6. The free space figures displayed in the Dis eeper MMC snap-in may not match those shown in the Dis eeper report view if you are running Norton Protect. 7. When the post-defragmentation summary report is displayed, scheduled "Set It and Forget It" defragmentation jobs are prevented from starting. Close the summary report to allow the scheduled defragmentation to occur. D. KNOWN INCOMPATIBILITIES =========================== 1. Dis eeper will not run on dis volumes that are loc ed by utilities such as Scandis . 2. We have noted occasional problems in defragmenting volumes that have been configured or resized with Partition Magic. If you are having problems defragmenting a volume, and it has previously been configured or resized with Partition Magic, it may be necessary to bac up, reformat, and restore the volume prior to running Dis eeper. 3. When using an IOMEGA JAZ drive with the IOMEGA Quic .exe application installed, you may receive the following blue screen error message when you log on to the computer using an administrative account: Stop 0x0000000A (parameter, parameter, parameter, parameter) IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. The IOMEGA Quic .exe application is installed in the Startup group to start automatically. It sends invalid system calls that are only allowed when logged on as an administrator. When the Dis eeper Boot-Time operation is run, the Quic .exe application is delayed in starting, thus causing the above problem.

4. The Hercules Terminator AGP 128/3D "GLH" 8MB also does not appear to display the full Boot-Time dialog, and thus appears to hang when the "Pause at End" option in the Dis eeper Boot-Time option has been selected. 5. The eyboard functions in the Boot-time defragmenter do not wor on all combinations of hardware, HAL (hardware abstraction layer), and operating systems. We are wor ing to provide eyboard access from the greatest combination of these elements, but if your system does not respond to the eyboard functions during a boot-time, please report the hardware configuration and full operating system version to Dis eeper Corporation Technical Support at this address: (tech_support@dis eeper.com). Providing this information may help us determine why certain combinations of hardware and software cannot access the eyboard functions in the boot-time defragmenters. 6. Dis eeper is compatible with Roxio GoBac . Note, however, that you should add the "gobac io.bin" file to the Dis eeper exclusion list. After doing so, should be no problems running GoBac along with Dis eeper. E. INSTALLING DISKEEPER ======================== Note: Ma e sure you are logged onto an account that is a member of the Administrators group. Dis eeper is available either as a downloaded self-extracting compressed file, or on CD-ROM. The following instructions apply to both formats. Follow these steps to install Dis eeper: The Dis eeper installation is typically fast and simple. Here are the basic steps: 1. Insert the Dis eeper CD-ROM into the appropriate drive on your computer.
