Introduction to Sociology
This course examines the nature of sociology and ways in which sociologists go about their work. Students will examine sociology as a distinctive perspective on human behavior and the links between personal experience and wider social forces while covering the main fields of the discipline.
The class is taught by Assistant Professor of Sociology Dr. Sarah Whiteford, who has been with Hartwick since 2010. Originally from Western Kentucky, Whiteford received her B.S. in sociology and B.A. in psychology from Lambuth University in Jackson, TN. She went on to receive a masters degree in Social Science Research from Florida State University in 2003 before beginning her doctoral work at the University of Tennessee. Though she has been teaching sociology for eight years, her personal research interests lie in the areas of criminology, and she is the coordinator of the criminal justice minor.

SOAR is supportive.
I would recommend SOAR to everybody. It was very supportive, which is what I needed. I got a taste of the college workload, I got familiar with the campus, I learned how to handle the stress, and I formed great relationships with the other students in SOAR. We stick together even now. I was set up to succeed because of SOAR.
