SCOTS IN 750 PHRASES

Introduction
The expressive soul of Scots
Although the Scots Learners Dictionary and the Scots Learners' Grammar describe in outline the vocabulary and structure of Scots, neither capture the soul of the language. While surprisingly well documented, Scots has always been primarily an oral language. This can be seen in its profusion of expressive idioms, phrases and sayings. Over the last four centuries Scots has been the main medium the majority of Scottish people have used to communicate with friends and family, show their emotions, comment on the people and environment around them and sometimes laugh at them all. Reading through any list of idioms gives you a unique glimpse of Scottish attitudes and culture as embedded in the words and phrases that have become popular and have survived to the present day. One of the reasons Scots has resisted centuries of neglect, suppression and hostility may be simply that it still allows us to say things about people and situations we just cannot say in any other way. Idioms and phrases allow us to share in an instant a vivid background of shared culture, memory and above all attitudes. To Scots speakers many of the 750 phrases here will immediately conjure up an image, an event or a personality.

Where do these phrases come from?

I've been collecting Scots phrases for many years, I passionately look out Scots 'phrase books', descriptions, dialect books, articles, word-lists scanning books from the early part of the last century to the countless internet discussions on Scots words usage today. I have avoided anything I would consider archaic, obscene, too dialect-specific or unlikely to be in wide usage Scottish people are linguistically very inventive and have a habit of making up personal phrases. I would say that 80% of the idioms here I have heard in natural speech at some time in Lowland Scotland and the others I have tried to confirm from more than one source, so most are 'live'. Even some of those that might be considered near-archaic I have heard used sometimes in an 'ironic' sense, spoken in virtual inverted commas. What is surprising is how in this painstaking exercise patterns often re-emerge; some Scottish speech users regard as 'slang' or 'wrong' are well-recognised Scots forms with a long history of legitimate and sometimes literary use.

How can I use this list as a learner?

The phrases have been roughly sorted by headwords, key parts of the phrase which are to me significant or unusual. An example is the headword the, which seems innocuous enough but is used in Scots in specific ways. Other headwords point to specific idioms, proverbs, unusual words and so on. I haven't tried to translate phrases literally rather where they would be used instead of an equivalent English phrase; some are almost untranslatable anyway. The Scots Learners' Dictionary and the Scots Learners' Grammar will help decipher the literal meaning, if you need it. I suggest initially reading through the phrases, highlight the ones you like, remember or think might be particularly useful and try to use them in your speech and writing. The nice thing about idioms like this is they can be dropped as linguistic units easily into quite English patterns of speech and so are ideal for beginners to get used to using Scots in conversation. As with the other documents in this series, Scots in 750 phrases is also a work in progress. If users find missing phrases, good Scots expressions I have forgotten, mistakes, typos or inconsistencies in the list, please let me know via scotshaunbuik.co.uk and I will update it.
