Mooncakes
Loretta Seto Illustrated by Renn Benoit
Tonight the moon shines like a polished pearl, round and fat. It glows bigger and brighter than I have ever seen. Tonight is a special night. Tonight I am allowed to stay up late. Soon there will be mooncakes to eat, sweet and chewy. They are round like the moon. They make a circle for me and Mama and Baba. They make a circle for my family. Outside we light paper lanterns. I made one all by myself using my favorite colors. The lanterns and stars light up the sky. The moon makes everything shine like silver and water.

ooncakes is the lyrical story of a young girl who shares the special celebration of the Chinese Moon Festival with her parents. As they eat mooncakes, drink tea and watch the night sky together, Mama and Baba tell ancient tales of a magical tree that can never be cut down, the Jade Rabbit who came to live on the moon and one brave womans journey to eternal life. With a gentle focus on the importance of family, Mooncakes is both a perfect book for parent and child to read together, and an ideal choice for schools and libraries.

Loretta Seto is a fiction and screenwriter, as well as a playwright. She has been published in Ricepaper magazine and the anthology Strike the Wok. Loretta completed her MFA in creative writing at UBC and is excited by the challenges she faces writing in different genres. Mooncakes is her first childrens book. He asks Tova to help him find a way to get milk from their hens, and the results are hilarious. Finally, to the familys joy and the hens relief, the problem is solved by none other than the wise Rabbi of Chelm himself, with a little extra help from Tova. Joan Betty Stuchner confesses that although her family has a big backyard, they dont keep chickens, or even a goat. Joan lives in Vancouver, British Columbia. n the spring of 2000, Fumiko Ishioka, the curator of a Holocaust education center in Tokyo, received an empty suitcase from the Auschwitz museum. From the moment she saw it, Fumiko was captivated by the writing on the outside of the suitcase, which identified its owner: Hana Brady, May 16, 1931, Waisenkind (the German word for orphan). Children visiting the center were full of questions. Who was Hana Brady? Where did she come from? What happened to her? Fueled by their curiosity, Fumiko began a year of detective work, scouring the world for clues. Writer Karen Levine follows Fumiko in her search, from present-day Japan, Europe and North America back to 1938 Czechoslovakia and the young Hana Brady, a fun-loving child with a passion for ice-skating. Together with Fumiko, we learn of Hanas loving parents and older brother, George, and discover how the familys happy life in a small town was turned upside down by the invasion of the Nazis. Full of mystery, Hanas story comes to life through the eyes of Fumiko and later Hanas brother George, who now lives in Canada. Photographs and original wartime documents enhance a journey that bridges cultures, generations and time. The introduction is by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Bully 101
Doretta Groenendyk

A celebrated writer/illustrator tackles this timely topic.

ully 101 is an excellent conversation starter for both parents and teachers, and for anyone who hopes for peace. The illustrations are funky. The text rhymes and twists. Geared toward readers from primary to grade seven, Bully 101 identifies ways in which bullying occurs (cyber, playground, bus), the feelings that result (for both bully and victim) and the simple notion that anyone can choose kindness instead. The book does not answer all the questions surrounding bullying, nor does it preach. Rather, it aims to begin conversations on why we bully or watch it happen, and presents the idea that we can all choose not to participate in bullying.

Doretta Groenendyk is the illustrator of the childrens book Bounce and Beans and Burn and is the author and illustrator of Snow for Christmas, Thank You for My Bed (both of which have been shortlisted for the Lillian Shepherd Memorial Award for Illustration) and Im Writing a Story. It doesnt matter what color he is, as long as he can play. Boston Bruins coach Milt Schmidt
illie ORee quietly made NHL history on January 18, 1958, when he became the first black player to take to the ice. In the dressing room before the game, his Boston Bruins teammates told him not to worry. If any one of the opposing teams players said anything to him, theyd have his back. What is the Pink Triangle?

Ken Setterington

A time when gay rights were nonexistent, and your sexuality could be your death sentence.

efore the rise of the Nazi party, Germany, especially Berlin, was one of the most tolerant places for homosexuals in the world. Activists such as Thomas Mann and Albert Einstein campaigned openly for the rights of gay men and women and tried to repeal the law against homosexuality. But that all changed when the Nazis came to power; existence for gay people became fear-filled. Raids, arrests, prison sentences and expulsions became the daily reality. When the concentration camps were built, homosexuals were imprisoned along with Jews and any other groups the Nazis wanted to suppress. The pink triangle sewn onto prison uniforms became the symbol of the persecution of homosexuals, a persecution that would continue for many years after the war. A mix of historical research, first-person accounts and individual stories brings this time to life for young readers. Stories of bravery in the face of inhuman cruelty, friendship found in the depths of despair in the camps and the perseverance of the human spirit will educate and inspire.

Real Justice: Guilty of Being Weird

The story of Guy Paul Morin
Cynthia J. Faryon

Sentenced to prison for a crime he didnt commit.

t twenty-four, Guy Paul Morin was considered a bit strange. He still lived at home, drove his parents car, kept bees in the backyard and grew flowers to encourage the hives. He played the saxophone and clarinet in three bands and loved the swing music of the 1940s. In the small town where he lived, this meant Guy Paul stood out. So when the nine-year-old girl next door went missing, the police were convinced that Morin was responsible for the little girls murder. Over the course of eight years, police manipulated witnesses and tampered with evidence to target and convict an innocent man. It took ten years and the just-developed science of DNA testing to finally clear his name. This book tells his story, showing how the justice system not only failed to help an innocent young man but also conspired to convict him. It also shows how a determined group of people dug up the evidence and forced the judicial system to give him the justice he deserved. Cynthia J. Faryon has worked as a legal assistant and teen counselor. She is the author of eleven books, including Real Justice: Sentenced to Life at SeventeenThe story of David Milgaard. avid Milgaard was a troubled kid, and he got into lots of trouble. Unfortunately, that made it easy for the police to brand him as a murderer. At seventeen, David Milgaard was arrested, jailed and convicted of the rape and murder of a young nursing assistant, Gail Miller. He was sent to adult prison for life. Throughout his twenty-three years in prison, David maintained that he was innocent and refused to admit to the crime, even though it meant he was never granted parole. Finally, through the incredible determination of his mother and new lawyers who believed in him, David was released and proven not guilty. Astonishingly, in hindsight the real murderer was obvious from the start. This is the true story of how bad decisions, tunnel vision, poor representation and outright lying and coercion by those within the justice system caused a tragic miscarriage of justice. It also shows that wrongs can be righted and amends made.

Waiting for the Whales

Sheryl McFarlane, Illustrated by Sheena Lott 9781459804715 pdf 9781459804722 epub

Told with lyric simplicity, this story is more than a celebration of West Coast life; it is also a reminder of the joy of childhood and the thrill of discovery. In a time when our childrens entertainment has become increasingly formal, Jessies Island reminds us of the joy of unstructured play and the pleasures to be found in the natural world around us.

Jessies Island

In this timeless story, an old man lives alone on a bluff overlooking the sea and tends his garden. One day, his daughter and her baby return home to live with the old man, bringing a renewed sense of purpose to his life. As his granddaughter grows, the old man passes on a wealth of knowledge as well as his passion for the whales. And each year they wait together for the whales to appear.
