LEADING THE REFRIGERATION INDUSTRY THROUGH ENGINEERING AND EXPERIENCE

Corporate Headquarters : Baltimore

Since its founding in 1938, Baltimore Aircoil Company has specialized in the design and manufacture of evaporative condensing equipment and has become a worldwide leader in this field. B.A.C.s continuing program of engineering research has resulted in many design innovations, including the V-Line in 1968, the VX-Line in 1978, the Baltibond Corrosion Protection System in 1982, the ICE CHILLER Thermal Storage Units in 1984 and the Low Profile Series V-Line in 1988. In 1995, once again, B.A.C. raised the standard in heat transfer technology with the CXV Series Evaporative Condenser, a product which combines counterflow and crossflow cooling tower and evaporative condenser technology for enhanced evaporative condenser performance. Evaporative condenser research and product development programs are conducted at the worlds largest Evaporative Condenser Test Facility located at the Corporate Research and Development Laboratory. Here, B.A.C. engineers and technicians can simulate the broad range of environmental and system operating conditions that are encountered by units in actual use. Tests are conducted on equipment ranging in size from small prototype modules used in conceptual development up through full-scale field-erected units.

EVAPORATIVE CONDENSERS
... for refrigerant condensing in mechanical refrigeration or industrial process systems with minimum energy requirements and low life cycle costs. ENERGY SAVINGS
Evaporative condensers offer energy savings by providing lower system power consumption than conventional air-cooled and water-cooled condensing systems. COMPARED TO AIR-COOLED : Evaporative condenser capacity is a function of ambient wet bulb temperature while air-cooled condenser capacity is a function of ambient dry bulb temperature. Since design wet bulb temperatures are generally 8 to 12C lower than design dry bulb temperatures, condensing temperatures for systems using evaporative condensers can be 8 to 12C less, resulting in compressor and system power savings of up to 30 %. COMPARED TO SHELL AND TUBE CONDENSER/ COOLING TOWER SYSTEMS : The evaporative condenser rejects heat directly to the ambient air in one step of heat transfer. In the shelland-tube condenser/cooling tower system, heat must be first transferred to the cooling water by the condenser, and then to the atmosphere by the cooling tower. The single heat transfer step in evaporative condensers provides lower condensing temperatures and compressor power savings of up to 15 %.

LOW LIFE-CYCLE COST

is inherent in B.A.C. Evaporative Condensers. Evaporative condensers are generally lower in first cost than air-cooled condensers or shell-and-tube condenser/ cooling tower systems. The compact design requires less supporting steel and less space than other condensing systems. Moreover factory-assembled sectional construction minimizes costly field erection time. As a result, B.A.C. Evaporative Condensers offer a low total installed cost. A proven corrosion protection system and other B.A.C. design features minimize maintenance costs. Low first cost and low maintenance costs, combined with the energy saving benefits of evaporative condensers, result in lower life-cycle costs than alternative condensing systems.

VXC SERIES
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
Vapour in

The vapour to be condensed is circulated inside the tubes of the condensing coil, which is continuously wetted on the outside by a recirculating water system. Air is simultaneously blown upward over the coil, causing a small portion of the recirculated water to evaporate. This evaporation rejects the heat from the coil, condensing the vapour into liquid.

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS

VCL ADVANTAGES
LOCATION VERSATILITY
COMPACT OUTDOOR - INDOOR INSTALLATION

LOW INSTALLED COST

NO FIELD ASSEMBLY The VL Evaporative Condensers ship completely assembled. All seams and joints are factory sealed. No section assembly or installation and alignment of fan motors and drives is required. MINIMAL RIGGING REQUIREMENTS Because all units ship in one piece, rigging time and costs are significantly reduced. The unit simply set in place using conveniently located lifting devices. (Some optional accessories require independent lifts.)

The ability to locate the compact VCL units in tight locations allows designers of cooling systems to better utilize available space. Shorter, less costly enclosures can be used and units can be placed in narrow set-backs or close to solid walls. Optional discharge hoods which accelerate the air flow can be used to further reduce space requirements. LOW INSTALLED HEIGHT The VCL Evaporative Condenser is the best solution for height sensitive solutions. The VCL design reduces unit height by up to 2 meter compared to other configurations. This dramatic height reduction is due to a unique special chamber in the fan housing that greatly enhances fan efficiency and air distribution.

QUIET OPERATION
VERY LOW SOUND LEVELS When noise criteria are stringent, the centrifugal fan VCL units are selected to provide minimum sound levels. The centrifugal fans with inherent low noise characteristics will, in most cases, meet the specified sound requirements. DIRECTIONAL CAPABILITY In situations where one direction is particularly noise sensitive, the single-fan side design allows the quiet back panel side to be oriented toward the noise sensitive direction. In many instances, this procedure eliminates the need for additional acoustical treatment.

CXV SERIES
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
The vapour to be condensed is circulated inside the tubes of the condensing coil which is continuously wetted on the outside by a recirculating water system. Air is simultaneously drawn downward over the coil, causing a small portion of the recirculated water to evaporate. This evaporation rejects the heat from the coil, condensing the vapour into liquid. The water is then distributed over a wet deck surface where it is cooled by air being drawn across it, before being recirculated over the condensing coil by the condenser water pump.

Sloping tubes for free drainage. 2.BACROSS WET DECK SURFACE The efficient P.V.C. wet deck surface designed, manufactured, and tested by B.A.C. is an integral component of the CXV Series Evaporative Condenser innovative heat transfer system. With integral eliminators this wet deck surface provides maximum air/ water contact with minimal air pressure drop to ensure efficient heat transfer with low fan power requirements. 3.ELIMINATORS Constructed of U.V. resistant P.V.C. Three distinct changes in air direction reduce drift losses to only 0.002 % of design flow. Easily removable sections for quick access to the coil section. 4.STANDARD FAN MOTOR TEFC with IP55 protection, the motor is designed specifically for evaporative cooling service. Furnished with double-sealed, permanently lubricated bearings and extra protection from moisture on the windings. 5. Low Noise Axial Flow Fan - Bearings A low noise heavy-duty, fixid pitch, cast aluminum, axial flow fan specifically selected by B.A.C.. The fan cylinders are furnished with minimum fan tip clearance and a smoothly contoured inlet ring to streamline air entry for maximum efficiency. The fan guard in the top is all welded construction of heavy gauge, hot-dip galvanized steel. Heavy duty, self-aligning, grease lubricated ball bearings with moisture proof seals and integral slinger rings.

CXV ADVANTAGES
EASE OF MAINTENANCE
The CXV Evaporative Condenser provides easy access for routine maintenance. The make-up water assembly and the suction strainer are easily serviced from outside, at the base of the unit. A hinged, oversized access door provides easy access to a spacious plenum area where routine maintenance of the fan drive system can be performed.

REDUCED REFRIGERANT CHARGE

Due to the revolutionary design (patent pending) of the new CXV Evaporative Condenser heat transfer system, less coil surface is required to perform the same condensing capacity as other Evaporative Condensers. Less coil surface requires less refrigerant charge. The reduced refrigerant charge will decrease the operating charge of the overall system, lowering system cost. A lower system charge is a major asset to meet certain local code requirements.

LOW INSTALLED COST

The CXV Evaporative Condenser is designed to mimize installation costs. The LOW SHIPPING WEIGHT allows the use of smaller, less costly cranes. FEWER COIL CONNECTIONS reduce installation time and related refrigerant piping costs.

ENGINEERED SOUND ATTENUATION

The noise generated by evaporative cooling equipment requires a carefull evaluation from both acoustical, thermal and cost point of view. Baltimore Aircoil has the full capability to evaluate each individual project and to propose the most economical solution. Baltimore Aircoil sound attenuation systems are based on data developed and verified by extensive laboratory and field testing. These measurements have been performed in the sound test area at the B.A.C. Research and Develop-ment Center. Baltimore Aircoils units have detailed sound data for each model showing sound pressure level data per frequency band for each side of the unit and sound power level data for the complete unit.

VXC SOUND ATTENUATION

The VXC Evaporative Condenser will meet most sound level criteria without additional acoustical treatment. For more noise sensitive installations VXC units can be provided with complete factory assembled sound attenuators for field mounting. Two standard types of attenuators, with a different degree in attenuation are avaible.

VCL SOUND ATTENUATION

When noise criteria are stringent, the VCL units are the best choice to provide minimum sound levels. Their centrifugal fans with inherent low noise characteristics will, in most cases, meet the specified sound requirements. When even quieter operation is desired, the VCL Evaporative Condenser can be supplied with packaged sound attenuators designed and built by B.A.C. to further reduce sound levels. Two degrees of sound attenuation are available.

CXV SOUND ATTENUATION

In case more stringent noise requirements are imposed following sound attenuation solutions can be considered : Use of two speed fan motors for reduced fan speed and hence lower noise levels during the night. The lower wet bulb temperatures during the night will allow the unit to operate at low speed. Sound attenuators can be provided at the horizontal air inlet side to reduce the horizontal noise emission. Sound attenuators at the fan discharge will reduce the sound level and, if required, direct it away from the noise sensitive area.
10

The CXV Evaporative Condensers can meet most sound requirements for industrial locations because of : directional sound emission low noise axial fans all mechanical equipment (motors, belts, bearings) inside the unit.

EXTENDED SURFACE COILS (VXC, VCL)

As the load reduces and/or the dry bulb drops a suitably selected extended surface coil will be able to reject the heat in the sensible or dry mode. Typically these periods of reduced load or low wet bulb will be 50 % or more of the operating hours. EXTENDED SURFACE COIL CONSTRUCTION The B.A.C. extended surface coil comprises a specially wound, footless steel fin on some or all of the tubes making up the coil. The size and spacing of the fins have been designed by B.A.C. to give the optimum cost/ performance ratio. The complete coil assembly is hot dip galvanized after fabrication giving excellent corrosion resistance and a powerful mechanical and thermal bond between fin and tube. EXTENDED SURFACE COIL SELECTION The extended surface coil is sized to achieve as many hours of dry operation as economically possible. B.A.C.s selection procedure is able to predict performance in both wet and dry modes over all operating conditions.

WATER CONSERVATION The B.A.C. extended surface coil offers the ability to operate units dry during off peak or winter conditions. During these periods the recirculating pump is shut off and the pan drained which saves water and eliminates water treatment costs. ENERGY SAVINGS At or near design conditions and full load the coil operates wet to achieve the full benefits of evaporative cooling by removing both latent and sensible heat.

BALTIGUARD DRIVE SYSTEM (VXC, VCL)

are installed at one end of the mechanical equipment support and a lower kW motor, approximately 1/3 of the standard motor kW is installed on the other end of the mechanical equipment support. Drives for the lower kW motor are sized for approximately 2/3 of design fan speed. This arrangement allows the unit to be operating at either full or 2/3 fan speed.

ENERGY SAVINGS The BALTIGUARD Drive System is an energy saving option. It consists of two standard 1500 rpm motors and drive assemblies. A full size fan motor and drives

STANDBY PROTECTION Significant energy savings are achieved when operating at the low kW motor during periods of reduced load, and standby protection is afforded with the use of two standard single-speed motors.

BALTIBOND Corrosion Protection System

For corrosive environments and/or longer equipment life, all B.A.C. Evaporative Condensers can be provided with the BALTIBOND Corrosion Protection System. The BALTIBOND Corrosion Protection System is a polymerized metal created by a unique manufacturing process which fusebonds a special hybrid polymer to hot-dip galvanized steel. The BALTIBOND Corrosion Protection System is applied on all individual components of the entire unit before assembly. (B.A.C. Bulletin S680/3-1 provides further details.)

OPTIONAL VXC, VCL, CXV SERIES ACCESSORIES

PAN WATER HEATERS (VXC, VCL, CXV) Factory-installed heaters are available to prevent freezing of the pan water in an idle unit at below freezing ambient temperatures. Heaters are selected to maintain pan water temperatures of approximately 4C. They protect the water in the pan only and do not provide freeze protection for the pump and pump piping. REMOTE SUMP (VXC, VCL, CXV) Another most satisfactory method to protect the pan water against freezing is the use of an auxiliary sump with a spray water pump located within a heated space. The condenser pan drains to the indoor sump whenever the recirculating pump is not operating. This permits dry operation of the condenser when the load and ambient temperatures are low. ELECTRIC WATER LEVEL CONTROL (VXC, VCL, CXV) A factory-set electric water level control system can be substituted for the standard mechanical make-up valve to assure a constant water level. It is recommended for use on units that will require year-round operation in a freezing climate. CAPACITY CONTROL DAMPERS (VXC, VCL) Modulating capacity control dampers are available and are recommended when close control of the condensing pressure is required. BOTTOM PANELS AND SCREENS (VXC) Factory-installed bottom panels available for VXC condensers are required when the intake air is ducted to the unit. Air inlet screens can be factory-installed on the bottom of the VX units when location makes this additional protection desirable or necessary for safety purposes. INTAKE & DISCHARGE DUCTS (VCL) For indoor installations, intake and discharge ducts are available. Access doors are provided for easy access for maintenance. Ducts add static resistance and fan motors must be increased one size. MULTIPLE CIRCUIT COILS (VXC, VCL, CXV) For applications where several evaporative cooling and/ or condensing needs exist, a single evaporative coil unit can be selected with the coil circuits isolated for each individual load.

DESUPERHEATERS (VXC) Desuperheaters are available for VXC and VCL Evaporative Condensers for ammonia (R-717) installations with reciprocating compressors. DISCHARGE HOODS (VXC, VCL) Baltimore Aircoil offers a full line of standard straight and tapered discharge hoods for all Series VXC and VCL units. The tapered hoods are designed to increase the discharge air velocity to avoid recirculation in extremely tight enclosures or to elevate the tower discharge above adjacent walls. One size larger fan motors and drives must be used when tapered hoods are provided. MULTIPLE FAN MOTORS FOR CAPACITY CONTROL (CXV) Units with multiple fan motors are supplied with an internal baffle system which includes a solid partition that extends from the pan bottom vertically through the heat transfer surfaces. This system allows individual fan motors to be cycled on and off independently without harmful effects of air by-pass within the unit. All multiple fan units can be supplied with independent fan motors, drive assemblies, and internal baffles to allow independent operation of each fan. This option allows the use of fan cycling for capacity control. EXTERNAL SERVICE PLATFORM WITH LADDER (CXV) A factory-assembled external platform with an access ladder and safety railings is available. The external service platform option provides one means of safe and convenient access for the maintenance of the water distribution piping and spray nozzles. INTERNAL SERVICE PLATFORM (CXV) A factory assembled galvanized steel internal working platform and ladder provides a permanent working surface for servicing the fan drive system. AIR INLET SCREEN AND SUMP COVER PLATE (CXV) An air inlet screen can be factory-installed at the air intake side above the coil section. A sump cover plate is also available to help prevent debris from entering the condenser.
