The Land and the People: Population of Malawi: Malawi, officially the Republic of Malawi, is a landlocked country in southeast Africa that was formerly known as Nyasaland. It is bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast, and Mozambique on the east, south and west. The country is separated from Tanzania and Mozambique by Lake Malawi. Malawi is over 118,000 km2 (45,560 sq mi) with an estimated population of more than 13,900,000. Its capital is Lilongwe, which is also Malawi's largest city; the second largest is Blantyre and the third is Mzuzu. The name Malawi comes from the Maravi, an old name of the Nyanja people that inhabit the area. The country is also nicknamed "The Warm Heart of Africa". Tribes: There are a number of different tribes that inhabit Malawi, including: Chewa, Nyanja, Tumbuka, Yao, Lomwe, Sena, Tonga and Ngoni The Tonga Tribe: The Tonga were originally nomadic, but seem to have settled in the Chintheche area.

There are some local jokes about the Tonga people: As a race, they are meticulous about their appearance and it is often said locally that a Tonga man will wear a suit complete with collar and tie, while the shirt beneath the jacket will be in tatters (except the collar, of course). They will also carry a handkerchief and a briefcase the former so that they can dust themselves down after a car has passed.

If you dont find this hugely amusing, dont worry youll soon get the hang of Malawian humour. Lilongwe Is The CAPITAL of Malawi.
