SPANISH HERO: Swanseas Jordi Gomez, right, celebrates his winning goal with Angel Rangel PICTURE: Huw Evans Agency
Spanish intervention proves
difference in Welsh derby
ROBERTO MARTINEZ last
night became the toast of the
white half of South Wales after
steering his Swansea City side to
a memorable derby win over
rivals Cardiff City.
The Swans manager emerged
victorious in the Carling Cup
contest as Jordi Gomez`s
56th-minute strike sealed victory
over the Bluebirds as the two
teams clashed in a major com-
petition for the first time in nine
years.
Ten-men Cardiff could not
complain after seeing the hosts
steal the show at the Liberty
Stadium, even before Stephen
McPhail had seen red for a
second booking.
And Dave Jones could do little
but hold his hands up and admit
his Bluebirds were well beaten.
But Martinez, after telling fans
to savour the moment of finally
getting one over on their old foes
following Cardiff`s recent su-
periority, has warned this must
only be the beginning for his
Swans.
Martinez said: 'Momentum is
a big word - but it is important
this is just the start.
'Today we were very good off
the ball, and while Cardiff threw
everything at us we coped with
it.
'And that`s a little sign that
we`re starting to get to grip with
this season and a step forward to
make sure we learn and we keep
growing.
'We were ourselves here and
that delights me - but this was for
the fans.
'They saw the players with
passion and desire and with good
football and it was all for them
and they can enjoy that.
'We know how much it meant
to themand together we created a
very special night at the Liberty
Stadium.
Yet it will be a night Cardiff
fans will want to forget in a hurry
after being stunned by Swansea
against the backdrop of a
powder-keg atmosphere.
And Jones insisted his players
let themselves down after failing
to turn it on for the biggest Welsh
club clash in decades.
Jones, who also condemned
McPhail`s 75th-minute sending
off, blasted: 'We let ourselves
down, we didn`t play as well as
we can do and Swansea deserved
the victory.
We made too many mistakes
and gave probably our worst
performance of the season.
'The last thing you want to do
is come into a derby and not
perform but we lost our shape
and lost our discipline and we let
the crowd get up when we had
talked about not letting that hap-
pen - we`ve got to be better than
that.
'Both teams tried to play and
simply they played better than us.
We didn`t do enough to win the
game and that`s the most dis-
appointing thing for me.
But Jones insisted he is ready
to put things right long before the
two sides meet again next month,
adding: 'We must put this to
bed.
Yet after a pulsating game,
Martinez added: 'Both clubs
must now make sure we use this
as a step forward to repeat a game
like this in the Premier
League.
