Message From Captain in Chief

would like to congratulate the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) on her 75th anniversary and the publication of this book to commemorate the occasion. Since its inception, the RMN has progressed substantially from a mere coastal keeper to a more sophisticated navy, a progression which deserved special commendation.

The continuous force modernization program undertaken thus far has significantly improved RMNs capability in fulfilling her roles and tasks. This was made possible through the ability of the Navy People in adapting to the state-of-the-art technology guided by visionary leadership. This combination has paved the development of the RMN to a modern, versatile and credible force. RMNs maiden round the world voyage by KLD TUNAS SAMUDERA and the successful conduct of the anti-piracy operation in the Gulf of Aden reflect the RMNs capability to operate beyond its traditional waters. The recent inclusion of submarines into the RMN inventory as strategic assets signifies her leap towards a world class navy with the capability in all dimensions of maritime warfare. These achievements have also notably marked the shift of the RMN from a brown to a blue water Navy. I am confident, with such development and achievements, the RMN will continue to play her role effectively in national maritime defence. In this regard, I have unwavering confidence with the RMN leadership in charting the course of the Navy towards greater successes. Those achievements reflect RMN values and traditions which should be an inspiration to the nation. Lastly, I would like to wish the Navy People fair winds and following seas. Congratulations again to the RMN on her 75th Anniversary. May ALLAH SWT bless her always.

Message From
The Chief of Navy
am extremely delighted with the publication of this book to commemorate the Royal Malaysian Navys 75th Anniversary. This pictorial book is intended to depict how the RMN evolved and developed from a brown to a blue water Navy. In this book, the evolution of the Navy is illustrated in 3 periods of time, the first being from its formation as the Straits Settlement Naval Volunteer Reserve in 1934 till the independence of Malaya in 1957. The second from 1957 till 1979 while the third period is from the time the Navy moved from Woodlands, Singapore to Lumut in 1980 till the present day.

This book traces the progress of the RMN from her humble beginnings in the 1930s to be at par with other world-class navies today. The progression and its contribution towards the defence, security and development of the country is worthy of being shared with all Malaysians, especially the younger generation. The pictorial concept utilized in this book is deemed appropriate; as the saying goes that a picture paints a thousand words. The memories contained in this book are dedicated to all the Navy People both past and present who have contributed their services to the Navy. The sacrifices of their families, whose support and encouragement allowed the navy men and women to go about their duties diligently and wholeheartedly, have also not been forgotten. Their contributions are invaluable and shall remain in the realm of RMN history. I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to everyone who was responsible, and has contributed in any way towards the realization of this publication. Their contributions to this project have been so invaluable too. I would also like to express my gratitude and appreciation to the editorial team for their untiring efforts in compiling this book. I would like to say well done, BZ and a big thank you.
