How Do You Prepare a Heart for Christmas?

Reflecting on Gods Word
How do you prepare a heart for Christmas? It is not all that different from how we prepare any room for the season. We move some things out and bring others in: lights, candles, and appropriate decorations. We can also apply this to our hearts, both our individual heart and our community heart. Today four voices offer direction. Jeremiah calls us to remember the God who worked on the house of Israel and Judah, bringing a just shoot (Jeremiah 33:15) to flower from the old stump that Israel had become, replacing lifeless leadership with a new branch of the house of David. Justice would flourish for all the people. Jeremiah calls us to trust Gods designs that go beyond the surface. Jesus words, however, seem to contradict all this, predicting signs that will dismay and perplex, with people dying of fright. What happened to security and justice? But all this frightening activity is not for those waiting on the Lord. Jesus words are strong: Dont cower; stand erect. Dont let your heart sink into sleep, dive into drink, or be corrupted by carousing. Redemption is in the room, a heartbeat away. Paul reminds us that we best renovate our hearts by filling them with Gods love for others. We do this by how we treat each other. A new year offers time to bring healing to damaged relationships, to reach out to someone we have neglected. And God works along with us, pouring the Holy Spirit into our hearts.

Feast of the Immaculate Conception 12/7 @ 7pm 12/8 @ 9 & 11 am

Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, full of grace through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception. That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Pope Pius IX proclaimed in 1854: (411) The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin. CCC 495. This is a Holy Day of Obligation.

On December 9, 1531 a poor Mexican Indian, Juan Diego, was walking by a hill near his village when he heard beautiful music. Suddenly there appeared a radiant cloud and within it a young Indian maiden dressed as an Aztec princess. The young maiden spoke to the 57-year-old widower in his native language and directed him to visit the Archbishop of Mexico with a request that a chapel be built where she stood. The archbishop demanded a sign of authenticity, and the maiden instructed Juan Diego to gather flowers from the top of the hill where they met. Even though December was too late in the growing season for flowers to bloom, Juan Diego was surprised to find Castilian roses, not native to Mexico. On December 12, Juan Diego opened his cloak before the archbishop, the roses fell to the floor, and in their place the image of the young virgin was miraculously imprinted on the fabric. News spread quickly, and shortly thereafter an estimated nine million Indians converted to Catholicism. Our Ladys appearance to a poor, humble man is a compelling reminder that Gods loving embrace is all -inclusive; and that our Churchs preferential option for the poor is a Gospel imperative.

Simbang Gabi Mass Sunday, December 16th. @ 4:00 pm

Simbang Gabi means 'Evening Mass'. In practice, it is a series of nine Advent evening Masses from December 15 through December 23. Simbang Gabi tradition was brought to the Philippines by the Spanish friars at the start of the Catholic evangelization of the country. Since then, it has become a permanent Filipino spiritual tradition. The Filipinos of our parish and diocese are proud of their customs and traditions and encourage EVERYONE to join their celebration, regardless of your ethnic background. As always, fellowship will be observed in the gym after the mass. All are invited to the Simbang Gabi Celebration at Christ the King Parish on Sunday, December 16 at 4:00 pm in church. There will be a social in the Gym following our Mass.

Parish Council Meeting

The next meeting of the Christ the King Pastoral Parish Council will be on Tuesday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the Early Learning Academy. This meeting is open to all members of the parish. Anyone who is interested is welcome to attend. Whats Happening December 2012

December is rushing in on us with lists of many things to get done but, before it does, take a moment and jot down the following dates and plan to join us in helping you get ready for Christmas. December 1 & 2 St. Nicholas Holiday Fair - Saturday and Sunday - The Fair will take place in the Parish Life Center along side the scheduled December Hospitality event. The focus of the Fair will be baked goodies and craft items which are donated by fellow parishioners. The items for the raffle include a handmade Dollhouse, a Quilt, and Afghan and an Irish Santa along with several lovely Holiday Baskets. Stop by and bring your shopping list along with you. The Fair always has something for everyone! December 12 Celebrate 12-12-12! The combination of numbers in the date is quite unique. Celebrate 12-12-12 as a special day to do 12 things you can do to help someone; call 12 people you have been wanting to contact and make a plan to get together. You could also send $12.00 to your favorite charity or to a family member away at college. December 17 Our December meeting will be held at a different place and time! We will meet in the Meeting Room in the Academy after the 8:30 a.m. CCW Community Mass. Coffee, conversation and yummy goodies will be served. It will be an opportunity for us to get into the mood for celebrating the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day With so much going on in your life, you may find it helpful to quiet down for an hour or two and consider the reason for the season. That was why we decided to give ourselves an opportunity like the Little Drummer Boys who asked himself what gift he had to bring the newborn King on Christmas morning. What gift will you bring? CCW will be collecting newborn baby clothes, in His name, for the moms at Womans Choice Services. Put Baby Jesus name on your Christmas shopping list, pick out a newborn baby outfit (or diapers) and join us for a cup of coffee and some holiday sweets. If you cant attend the meeting and would like to be part of the project, feel free to drop off your gift in the Narthex on Saturday, December 15th or Sunday, December 16th. You will be making a Merrier Christmas for someone who could use your help! More about the St. Nicholas Holiday Fair: Your donation to the Bake Sale or Craft Table would be very much appreciated. Please bring pre-priced baked goods and craft items to the Parish Life Center on Saturday, December 1 between 2:00 and 5:00 P.M.. For more information, please call Anna Weselak at 630-620-7797. Thank you!

Message from Respect Life Coordinator Alexandra Fedosenko

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I write to you asking for your assistance. The March for Life is approaching quickly and we are thrilled to have the highest number of people attending the March in our Diocese's history! We are currently working diligently to accommodate those on the wait list. We are so thankful for this beautiful testimony to Life. However, we need your help to make it all happen! There has been an overwhelming request for financial assistance for those attending this year. The money we have for assistance is purely through donations. While many have already donated, we simply do not have enough to make it possible for all those in need to attend. Those that rely on aid in order to make their trip possible need your help! After factoring in all of our donations, we are still $5457.50 short of what people humbly requested. Each person's reason for requesting aid is varied. Some have medical bills; other people already work two jobs, while some parents are out of work. Many students wrote in explaining their parents simply cannot afford the trip so they are trying to make it work on their own. Please Help! By sending in any amount a student's life will be affected. Your generosity would make the trip a possibility for so many willing hearts. Your donation will be given directly to those in need. If you would like to be very generous and support a student's way, their cost is $325. Any amount can make a difference! As in all things, we also ask for your prayers. I thank you for your help and know that, "No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted." ~Aesop Please make checks payable: Diocese of Joliet (In the Memo write: Donation - March for Life) Mail to: St. Charles Pastoral Center Respect Life 101 W. Airport Rd Romeoville, IL 60446 OR www.dioceseofjoliet.org/life/donate.asp to make a donation on-line. Questions? Call us at 815-834 -4065.

10 Things You Can Do for the Poor at Christmas

There are many things you can do during the Advent and Christmas seasons to assist efforts to alleviate hunger in your community. Whether you volunteer individually, as a family or as part of a group or parish, the possibilities for serving the poor are almost limitless. Consider doing one or more of the 10 suggestions below: 1. Pray for the poor, and ask God to transform your own attitudes about those in need, realizing that all of us are poor in some way before Gods grace. 2. Suggest that a petition be added to the Prayers of the Faithful asking that the members of the parish community open their hearts to the poor. 3. Collect food items for a food pantry in your community. 4. Volunteer to assist a pantry for a day of sorting, bagging or distributing. 5. Buy fast food gift certificates to give out to people you see who need a meal or to those who request your aid on our downtown streets. 6. Ask your pastor or church staff if you could collect fast food and other gift certificates to be handed out to those in need who stop by the parish. 7. Volunteer at your parish or neighborhood soup kitchen. 8. Get your parish involved in observing World Hunger Sunday every year. 9. Make your own generous financial gift to an organization that serves the poor. 10. Think about ways to use your professional skills in a volunteer capacity at your chosen anti-hunger organization. There are many programs, including Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) screening and application assistance centers, food banks, and other anti-hunger organizations, that can use your help to make sure that all eligible people have access to nutrition assistance and anti-hunger programs. You will find rich rewards in fulfilling these stewardship tasks. For Jesus said that whatever we do for one of the least of his brothers and sisters, we do it for him (see Matthew 25:40).

A Stewardship Moment

The Giving Tree

Thank you for your support! If you have a tag, please return your gift wrapped with the tag firmly attached on the gift by Sunday, December 9, 2012. Thank-you in advance for your generosity!

On this first Sunday of Advent, Jesus warns about the end-time; be vigilant, spiritually awake, pray, avoid self indulgence, spiritual malaise, and a preoccupation with anxiety. Jesus advises against a lifestyle of earthly pleasures and worry. These will not matter when the Lord asks for an account of our stewardship. Stewards realize their lives are not just about the here and now. They know themselves to be reflections of Gods active presence in the world and witnesses of the Lords promises. As we begin this season of hope, let us reflect on the practical effect of having every waking moment in our lives dedicated to the Lord.

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME
Thank You for Winter Wonderland! Thank you Mrs. Placey, Sue Wick, parish staff and the volunteers who made this parish event a success. I appreciate all that was done! Fr. Peter

PADS Needs Your Help! We need 2 male and 2 female volunteers to work either the 3-7am and 5-7am shifts. You must be compliant with Safe Environment and training will be provided. Please call Eileen at 630-396-6076 or Martha or Jarrod Cebulski at 630-932-4019.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
A STEWARDSHIP PRAYER for December
Gracious Lord, Let your goodness reveal itself to us, that we, made in your image, may conform ourselves to it. We cannot imagine your majesty, power and wonder on our own; nor is it fitting for us to try. But your kindness and mercy reach from the heavens, through the clouds, to the earth below to show us the fruits of your Incarnation. You have come to us as a small child, but you have brought us the greatest of all gifts, the gift of your eternal love. Caress us with your tiny hands, embrace us with your tiny arms, and soften our hearts with your tender voice so that we might respond as humble stewards of your active presence in the world. We pray this through Christ, your Son who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen

Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.
