Role of Women in the 1920s

Women Before 1920


Social Werent allowed to be in bars, clubs, and anywhere without an escort. Werent allowed to dress provocatively. Not allowed to drink, smoke, or play any sports. Economic Women were half of the population but could only work certain jobs with low pay. Political Women were granted the right to vote in certain states before the 19th amendment passed.

Women After 1920


The 19th amendment passed in 1920, and granted womens suffrage. Women took on factory jobs because of WWI. The younger generation of women dressed daring, now showing arms and legs.

Women now attended speakeasies, where they drank alcohol and smoked. In 1928, women started to compete in the Olympic Games field events.

The 19th Amendment

The vantage point of men during this time was that women were inferior to men and should not be given the right to vote because they would kill politics. Some states gave the right to vote to women before the amendment but it wasnt officially an amendment until 1920.

Womens views on social problems were valued. After women succeeded they got men traditional jobs.

Women in The Workforce


In 1920 the women work force composed of 23.6%. During 1920s the women had more opportunities in the work force. These consisted of beings teachers, nurses, secretaries, and seamstresses. After men came back from war women still stayed at there jobs.

Womens Fashion

After the 1920s women started showing more skin. Sleeveless dresses were introduced to the clothing lines. Flappers were women that changed dramatically in fashion and personality The bikini was a major controversy in womens wear but it evolved slowly.

A description of a flapper is casually dated, wore midsized dresses, and wore makeup. Southerners stuck to there traditional wear, opposing to flappers fashion.

Women's Change

Women who were unmarried had no worries about wasting there money they had access to basically anything. The social life of women consisted of having trends, good fashion, and showing off there sexy image. Women started smoking and changed there hairstyle. Women made there hair shorter. Women began to attend school and gradually do things that women were not allowed to do before the 1920s.

Women in Politics

Began to exercise their voices through voting.

Gradual change has happened since the 20s including some of the first women governors and mayors have came out in the 1920s.

Since then there is yet to be a women president but women are now active in the three branches of government.

Women Accomplishment

1923 - Edna St. Vincent Millay becomes the first woman to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize for poetry. 1925 - Nellie Tayloe Ross is inaugurated as the thirteenth governor of Wyoming, thus becoming the first woman governor of a state in the United States. 1926 - Bertha K. Landes is elected mayor of Seattle. 1928 In education, 39% of degrees are given to women.
