three radiology rooms, two cesarean sec-
tion rooms, four labor and delivery rooms
and a parking lot. When completed, it will
be one of the most technologically advanc-
ed hospitals in the country, according to
the company.
“The structure is a structural steel com-
posite slab system bearing on a foundation
system, enhanced through the vibroflota-
tion soil densification technique,” Bovis
says. “The exterior skin system consists of
architectural pre-cast panels with strip and
punch window elements, plus some
curtainwall elements. The skin also is
enhanced by a decorative aluminum
sunscreen system above the windows.”
Green Building
The technological edge Bovis Lend Lease
brings to the St. Joseph’s project not only
covers the advanced medical equipment
that will be installed there, but also
includes the sustainability of the facili-
ty. The company says the project is
being built with the goal of LEED certi-
fication, and incorporates a number of
sustainable features.

According to Bovis Lend Lease, meas-
ures being taken on the job site to reduce
the environmental impact include reduc-
ing truck and equipment idling, treating
concrete wash-off water before discharging
it to storm sewers and hiring workers from
the immediate area. The company is aim-
ing to reduce its construction waste by 50
percent by sorting it into individual recy-
clable material categories. About 10 percent
of the project’s construction material also
comes from regional sources.
In consideration of the interior air quali-
ty, Bovis Lend Lease is using only low-VOC
materials, including adhesives, paints and
sealants. None of the wood products being
used on the project contain urea formalde-
hyde-based resins.
“Bovis Lend Lease developed and
implemented a construction internal air
quality plan, which will protect the HVAC
system from construction dust during con-
struction, protect materials from moisture
damage and prohibit smoking in the build-
ing after wall board is installed,” the compa-
ny says.
“Bovis Lend Lease also implemented a
moisture mitigation and mold prevention
program, which involved pre-emptive
measures to prevent mold growth in the
building, regular walk-through inspec-
tions by a mold specialist, and a rapid
response plan for conditions that could
foster mold growth.”
Energy conservation is another area of
focus for the project’s construction, accord-
ing to the company. Premium efficiency
chillers and equipment, along with occu-
pancy sensor-controlled lighting have been
proposed for the hospital. The hospital is
being built with a lightly colored, highly
reflective roof to prevent the sun from
warming the building.
