CU 24020 Product Description

In synchronous transmission, the range of available data rates is 600 bit/s...64 kbit/s. In asynchronous transmission, rates up to 19.2 kbit/s are available. The adaptation of data interface into the 2 Mbit/s frame structure has been implemented in accordance with ITU-T Recommendation V.110. The V.110-compliant frame structure has been implemented separately for each interface. Depending on the data rate, the interfaces each get 1, 2, 4, or 8 bits of the 8-bit time slot. The interface-specific framing of the data interfaces enables various branching and through-connection functions on the sub-time slot level. The transmission capacity is therefore effectively utilized when several slow data interfaces with different routes are required. Note Software version CS 24064.01 01A is made for special purposes, and does not fully comply with the V.110 and V.24 Recommendations (see usage of V.24 circuit 111 and V.110 X-bit for flow control in chapter 3).

Operation of the Unit

Chapter 3 Operation of the Unit

This chapter gives an overview of the functional blocks and interfaces of Data Unit CU 24020.

3.1

Blocks and Their Functions

The block diagram of the unit is shown in Figure 2. The interfaces of the basic unit comply with ITU-T Recommendations V.24 and V.28. An asynchronous-to-synchronous converter is used when an asynchronous Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) is added to the network. In synchronous use the converter is bypassed. In the conversion, the asynchronous data is synchronized to the network in accordance with ITU-T Recommendation V.14. In asynchronous transmission, the length of the character can be 8, 9, 10, or 11 bits, including the data bits, start and stop bits and the parity bit, if one is used. The synchronous data and the specified V.24 control circuits are brought to the V110 ASIC, which comprises two data interfaces. In the transmit direction, the V110 ASIC generates the frame structure (in accordance with ITU-T Recommendation V.110) for each interface; in the receive direction, it releases the framing. The unit microprocessor controls the operation of the V110 ASICs and asynchronous-to-synchronous converters in accordance with the settings given with the Service Terminal (ST), Macro STE (Service Terminal Emulator), or Transmission Management System (TMS). In addition, the processor controls the V.24 circuits that are not transmitted along with the V.110 frame structure.

Data Interface
The ITU-T Recommendations relating to the data interfaces are:
D D D D

V.14 V.24 V.28 V.110

3.2.1

ITU-T Recommendation V.14

ITU-T Recommendation V.14 describes a method of conveying start-stop characters over a synchronous connection with user data rates up to 19.2 kbit/s. This method tolerates variations in the user data rates of the Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) within two ranges:
D D

basic range: extended range:

+1 to 2.5% of the nominal rate +2.3 to 2.5% of the nominal rate

This data unit supports the basic range.

3.2.2

ITU-T Recommendations V.24 and V.28

ITU-T Recommendation V.24 defines the use of interchange circuits in data transmission. ITU-T Recommendation V.28 defines the electrical characteristics of the interchange circuits. Recommendation V.28 corresponds to the EIA 232 standard (former RS-232). The interface circuits of the data interfaces between the data unit and the data terminal equipment are connected to the two front Euroconnectors of the unit. The interface circuits have been arranged as interface-associated groups, thus allowing for cabling with either a full-size Euroconnector or a quarter-size Euroconnector (3x7 pins). The standard V.24/V.28 interface has been defined for transmission rates 0...19.2 kbit/s. However, Data Unit CU 24020 allows even transmission rates 48, 56 and 64 kbit/s to be used. When these higher data rates are used, the cables should be shorter (See the Installation part for the recommended cable lengths and types).

Timing of V.24/V.28 Interface

In the asynchronous operating mode, the Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) transmits and receives data in phase with its own clock. The speed difference between the clocks used in the DTE and the data unit is compensated for by manipulating the stop bits of the asynchronous data (Figure 3).

Asynchronous-synchronous conversion to the network clock

In the synchronous operating mode, there are two timing principles available: contra-directional and co-directional timing. In the contra-directional timing, the Data Circuit-Terminating Equipment (DCE), in this case the data unit, generates both timing circuit 114 and circuit 115 for the DTE (Figure 4). The timing circuits are generated in the data unit from the network 2048 MHz clock.

ITU-T Recommendation V.110

ITU T Recommendation V.110 discusses connection of the Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) in accordance with the current V series recommendations at the ISDN S/T reference point. Adaptation of the user rate is done in three phases. First, an asynchronous to synchronous conversion produces a synchronous bit stream, which is adapted into an intermediate rate using an 80 bit frame and then further into the 64 kbit/s B channel (Figure 7). User rates 48 kbit/s and 56 kbit/s are adapted directly into the 64 kbit/s B channel. These rates are framed as 32 and 64 bit frames.

CU 24020 Product Description

The structure of the V.110 frame for rates up to 19.2 kbit/s is shown in Figure 8. When rates 600, 1200 or 2400 bit/s are used, each of the data bits is repeated 8, 4 or 2 times, respectively (see also Table 4). For example, with data rate 600 bit/s, the first data bit is located in bit positions D1D8, the next data bit in bit positions D9D16 etc. For rates 4800...19200 bit/s, 48 actual data bits are obtained in a frame, which gives a 60-percent efficiency for the transmission capacity.

S8 (known as SA bits) of the frame. In the receive direction, the bits are received as circuit 107. Correspondingly, circuit 105 is transmitted in bits S4 and S9 (known as SB bits) of the frame; in the receive direction, the bits are received as circuit 109. The X-bits of the frame are used to transmit flow-control information: circuit 111 is transmitted in an X-bit; in the receive direction, this bit is seen as circuit 106. Note The use of the X-bit and circuit 111 together does not comply with ITU-T recommendations V.110 and V.24.

Bits E1, E2 and E3 are used to transmit information of the user rate; i.e. they indicate whether the data bits in the V.110 frame are repeated (rates 600, 1200 and 2400 bit/s). Bits E4, E5 and E6 are used to transmit phase information on the network-independent timing. Since the data unit does not support network-independent timing, these bits are not in use. Bit E7 is not used either. The function of bit E7 is to transmit the synchronization information on the 4 x 80-bit multiframe with a 600 bit/s rate.

Table 4

Use of E-bits in the data unit

The data unit matches the intermediate rate into a time slot in the 2 Mbit/s frame structure and allocates 1, 2 or 4 bits, depending on the user rate. This adaptation corresponds to the third phase adaptation to the 64 kbit/s B-channel (according to the V.110 Recommendation). The time slot and the time slot bits are freely selectable for each interface. Even the transmit and receive direction bits can be selected irrespective of each other. Several interfaces can be multiplexed into one time slot (conforming to Recommendation I.460, flexible multiplexing). The frame synchronization is considered accomplished when two error-free V.110 frames have been received in succession (no errors in the fixed 17-bit frame synchronization pattern). The frame synchronization is lost when three erroneous frames are received in succession, each frame containing at least one bit error in the fixed 17-bit frame synchronization pattern.

User Rates 48 and 56 kbit/s (not specified for V.24/V.28 interface)

User rates 48 and 56 kbit/s are adapted directly into an 8-bit time slot in accordance with Table 5 and Figures 9, 10. The adaptation complies with the adaptation to the 64 kbit/s B-channel (V.110 Recommendation). The frame synchronization is considered accomplished when five (48 kbit/s) or four (56 kbit/s) error-free V.110 frames have been received in succession. The frame synchronization is lost when three erroneous frames are received in succession.

3.3

DYNACARD Bus Interface

The data interfaces of the data unit are connected to the main unit of the equipment (DB 2, DM 2 or DN 2) via the DYNACARD bus on the motherboard. The DYNACARD bus consists of two 2 Mbit/s serial buses: one serves as a data and signalling bus, and the other as a master-slave control bus. The signals on the DYNACARD data and signalling buses are multiplexed to the external 2 Mbit/s interface signals by the equipment main unit. With the exception of multiframing and signalling, the structure of the DYNACARD buses is based on the 2 Mbit/s frame structure as defined in ITU-T Recommendation G.704. The main unit control bus is a slow asynchronous data channel used for communication between the equipment main unit and several tributary units, e.g. the data unit. Every unit installed in a cartridge or subrack has its own, individual address, which indicates the location of the unit in the cartridge.

3.4

Operation in Duplex Mode

Operation of the data unit in duplex mode is shown in the state diagram of Figure 11. The operation is based on ITU T Recommendation V.110, except that the use of the X bit and circuit 111 together is modified for GSM pur poses. When the operating voltage is connected to the unit, the interfaces enter the Idle State (IS). If an interface is activated into the 2 Mbit/s bus, the contents of the transmitted signals will be in a continuous binary ``1" state, that is, the V.110 frame will not be transmitted. The ON state of DTE circuit 108 causes the interface to enter the Frame Search State (FRS). The interface will send a fixed V.110 frame with the data bits in binary ``1" state and the S and X bits set to state OFF (binary ``1"). Simultaneously, the receiver tries to synchronize itself with the received data. If synchronization is not achieved within ten seconds, the interface will enter the Disconnect State (DS). If the use of circuit 108 has been defined as Not in use, the circuit is controlled into continuous ON state. The interface is then continuously in the FRS state until synchronization is achieved. When the interface has been synchronized, it enters the Data Transfer State (DTS). DTE circuit 111 is connected to the X bit of the outgoing frame, and DTE circuits 105 and 108 are connected to the S bits of the frame. Circuit 103 of the DTE is connected to the D bits of the frame. In the receive direction, the D bits of the frame are connected to the DTE as circuit 104, the S bits as circuits 107 and 109, and the X bit as circuit 106. The far end circuit 111 thus controls the near end circuit 106 and consequently enables transmission from the DTE. In other words, the S and X bits serve as handshaking signals. No data is transferred before both ends of the connection have been synchronized to each other and are ready to communicate. If synchronization is lost, the interface enters the FRS state again and the X-bit of the outgoing frame is set to OFF state. Circuit 106 is controlled to the DTE state

Operation in Duplex Mode

OFF, but circuits 107 and 109 remain in, or are controlled into ON state. If synchronization is not achieved within three seconds, the interface enters the Disconnect State (DS). A change from the DTS state into the DS state also occurs when DTE circuit 108 has been defined to be used and is switched into OFF state. In the DS state, the D-bits of the outgoing frame have been set to binary 0 state and the S-bits have been set to OFF state to indicate a request to interrupt. When the 12-ms time-out has elapsed, the interface enters the IS state. Transmission of the frame is then terminated; that is, the continuous binary 1 state is transmitted. The same procedure is performed when synchronization is lost. The IS state can always be entered by deactivating the interface.

Caution Use wrist grounding or other such protection when handling a plug-in unit removed from its package.

The data units are ready to operate as soon as they have been installed in a cartridge and the signal cables have been connected. Note that one data unit reserves space for 13 alarms in the fault supervision table of the main unit. This may, in certain cases, affect the maximum size of the equipment configuration. (For further information, see the operating handbook for the main unit concerned.)

Installing the Unit in a Cartridge

Chapter 3 Installing the Unit in a Cartridge

3.1

Back Connector PB1

When the data unit is installed in a cartridge, the central battery voltage is connected to the unit via the motherboard of the cartridge and the back connector PB1 of the unit. The power supply of the unit generates the necessary operating voltages, which are brought to the PB1 connector for test purposes. Two external +5 V voltages are needed for driving the red service LED and interfacing the DYNACARD control and data buses. The connectors on the motherboard of the cartridge and the back connectors of the units have been standardized so that certain signals are always located at the same pins, as shown in Figure 1. Therefore, any type of interface unit can be installed in any location in the cartridge. The data unit can be installed in any free unit location in any TM4 cartridge which contains a DYNACARD-MUX unit. The same cartridge may also contain other Nokia equipment of the same generation.

Signal Interfaces and Their Cabling

Chapter 4 Signal Interfaces and Their Cabling

The incoming and outgoing data and clock circuits between the data unit and the terminal equipment are wired to the two front Euroconnectors of the unit (see Figures 35 and Tables 18).

4.1

Connectors and Cables

Note For the cabling between the data unit and other equipment, use only a special cable designed for data communication purposes.

The pin numbering of the data unit interfaces is shown in Figure 3. The interfaces can be cabled either by connector, in which case you should use a full-size Euroconnector, or by interface, in which case you should use a quartersize (3 x 7-pin) Euroconnector; see Figures 4 and 5. When data rates over 19.2 kbit/s are used, the cable should be Nokia type MMHS 8x2x0.4+0.4 or corresponding and less than 2 meters long to guarantee error-free data transmission. Under favourable circumstances the length of the cable can be increased up to 4 meters.

Signal Interfaces and Their Cabling

4.2

Cabling Examples
The data interfaces can be cabled with either quarter-size or full-size Euroconnectors. It is essential that you know the application for which the data interfaces are used, because in many cases only a few of the V.24 circuits are needed. Figures 6 11 give cabling examples for the most common situations:
D D D

Complete cabling, which covers asynchronous and synchronous transmission with all control circuits connected. Cabling for asynchronous transmission with all V.110 control circuits connected. Cabling for asynchronous transmission with only data circuits connected. In the examples, the direction is indicated with respect to the unit.

Note

Complete cabling with all control and clock circuits connected is shown in Figures 6 and 7. The following circuits are needed:
D

Ground and data circuits: 102, 103 and 104 Control circuits transferred in a V.110 frame: 105, 106, 107, 108, 109 and 111 Clock circuits: 113, 114 and 115 Other circuits: 125, 140, 141 and 142

Start-up of a New Unit

Chapter 2 Start-up of a New Unit

This chapter explains the procedure for bringing the data unit into use for the first time. The recommended way to start up a new unit is the following: 1. 2. Place the unit in the cartridge; if the unit is not installed, the red service LED will turn on. Connect the Service Terminal to the service connector of the DYNACARDMUX and establish a connection to the equipment (interface cables disconnected) by assigning command OBJ 7 RET. You will receive this response:
Current object: AD 4095/DM 2 9600 bit/s /EOB/

The green LED turns on to indicate that a connection from the Service Terminal to the equipment has been established. 3. Install the unit by selecting response:
Installing /EOB/

RET.

You will receive the following

The installation will take approximately 10 minutes. When the red LED has gone off, make sure that the unit has been installed by assigning command TOP 6,2,0 RET. A response example:

4. 5. 6.

Deactivate all active interfaces by assigning command TOP 6,9,u,1 (u = unit location). The unit should now respond by displaying Done.

RET

Run channel tests for each interface by assigning command TOP 9,9,u,2,ch RET (ch = channel 1...4). The unit should now respond by displaying Channel ok. Check error messages given by the equipment by assigning command TOP 1 RET.

The data unit is now ready to receive the settings.

Settings

Chapter 3 Settings
The unit is provided with factory settings, which can be modified whenever necessary. You can also read the settings from one interface and save them to another with the Service Terminal. The controlling of the data unit locally, through the service interface of the equipments main unit (DYNACARD-MUX), is described in further detail in document Service Menu Reference.

Maintenance

Chapter 4 Maintenance
The data unit does not require any scheduled maintenance. Servicing is required only when faults are indicated by alarms. The self-tests performed by the unit itself are useful for further location of any faults that may occur.

4.1

Tests
The data unit can perform the following self-tests:
D

Channel tests Test the operation of each interface of the unit with all operation modes and transmission rates. A/D test Tests the A/D converter of the unit. Memory tests Test the memory operations of the RAM, EPROM and EEPROM of the unit.

D D

The data unit is equipped with an interface-specific test transmitter/receiver, which, along with the unit loopbacks, can be used to test the connection without having to use any separate measuring instruments.

4.2

Statistics
The data unit gathers information for the following statistics:
D D

CPU reset Counts the CPU resets. Loss of V.110 frame alignment Detects V.110 frame alignment losses.

CU 24020 Operation

4.3

Alarms
When the red service LED is on, there is usually a serious fault in the unit and it will have to be replaced with a new one. In the data unit, the red service LED is used also to indicate bit errors on the transmission path when the unit is in test mode. The yellow service LED indicates that the unit is in test mode, that a loopback has been set, that an interface is queuing for activation, that the incoming line signal is missing, or that the frame synchronization has been lost. The fault is thus not necessarily in the unit that indicates the alarm. The green service LED is on when the unit is accessed by the Service Terminal.

4.4

State and Fault Messages

The state and fault messages of the data unit are listed in Table 1. The fault display of the unit can be read by assigning command TOP 1 with the Service Terminal. Note that one data unit reserves space for 13 alarms in the fault supervision table of the main unit. This may, in certain cases, affect the maximum size of the equipment configuration. (For further information, see the operating manual for the main unit concerned.)

How to Control and Access the Unit with Service Terminal

Chapter 3 How to Control and Access the Unit with Service Terminal
This chapter explains briefly the principle for controlling the unit with a Service Terminal. A more detailed description on the use of the Service Terminal is described in the Operating Manual for Service Terminal TC 21700. With the Service Terminal, you can assign the basic settings to the unit and store them into a nonvolatile storage. You can also take maintenance-related measures, e.g. set loopbacks, and read e.g. identifications or statistics from the unit.

Control Principle
The equipment is controlled by choosing options on menus. You can also bypass intermediate menu levels by keying in several selections as one string, if you know the entire command string (e.g. 5,9,3,2,3 to loop back the outgoing 2048 kbit/s signal of the 2M interface of the data unit; in this example we assume that the unit was installed in unit location 3). Within command strings, commas are used as command parameter delimiters, and the command is executed with the RET key. The Service Terminal keypad is shown in Figure 1.

Data Unit Menus

Chapter 5 Data Unit Menus

The data unit is controlled via the service interface of the main unit (DYNACARDMUX). The main unit provides the menus related to the common section of the equipment and the menus for accessing the target unit. The data unit provides the menus required for its own control.

5.1

Fault Display
The main unit collects fault data from the other units into a common fault storage. At initialization, the main unit collects from each unit the following data: the faults in the unit, their effect on the alarm outputs, the fault code related to each fault, how the fault is indicated (colour of indicator), and name of the supervision block. The main unit generates the response shown in the fault display; the response contains the following information:
D D D

Equipment ID (equipment name) Fault status Fault data: S Fault object S Fault type (fault code)

Example:
*DM ABC (AS) DM2/1 (unit 1) frame alignment lost DIU 19S (unit 3) synchronizing fault

In the above example, the equipment, named DM 2 ABC, has alarms A and S. The fault indications are received from the supervision block of equipment interface 1 (unit 1), where the fault is loss of frame alignment, and from the supervision block of the data unit (unit 3), where the fault is loss of V.110 frame synchronization.

6,9,u,2,ch,4 Time Slot Allocations

The time slot is selectable in the range 1 to 31.
TS allocation: 0 Display 1 Tx/Rx time slots 2 Tx time slots only 3 Rx time slots only

Selection 0 displays the time slots used by the channel. Selection 1 sets the same time slot for the transmit and receive direction. Selection 2 sets the time slot for the transmit direction only. Selection 3 sets the time slot for the receive direction only. After the time slot selection, a bit mask is required for the time slot selected.
Bit mask: give bit mask B1...8

You can write 1, 2, 4, or 8 ones (1) in the bit mask, depending on the transfer capacity required by the channel. An example: B1...B8 10000000.

Bit B1 is selected from the specified time slot.

6,9,u,2,ch,5 Activate Channel

The selection connects the channel selected to the 2M bus. The activation process checks that the channel settings are correct.

6,9,u,2,ch,6 Deactivate Channel

The selection deactivates the channel selected.
