Stabilizing the budget or sav-
ing the current home of the
American Legion Post? For a sec-
ond time, members of the Wash-
ington Township American Le-
gion Post, on Wednesday, Nov. 28,
gathered in front of council ex-
pressing concerns with publicly
auctioning the Grenloch Commu-
nity Center.
Due to time constraints on fi-
nalizing the 2013 budget, council
decided at the last meeting to sell
the property via public auction,
on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Council
agreed until the American Le-
gion finds another home, all fu-
ture bids will be rejected.
With only a few weeks left until
auction, the organization has yet
to find a comparable facility for
According to former
American Legion commander
Bob Maloney and a Grenloch res-
ident, Atlantic City Electric
expressed interests in the prop-
erty.
Since the building will be up
for public auction, township
solicitor John Armano said the
sale is not a private sale to a
specific entity, and any interest
in the property must go through
an auction process. The property
will be awarded to the highest
bidder and must be approved by
council, he said.

deeds. Its been tradition for the
last 14 years to do a high school
toy drive, event coordinator and
junior class adviser Carol Costel-
lo said.
Three class advisers and 24
class officers will camp out in-
side of the Core lobby for 24
hours collecting and sorting toys
before distribution.
We hang around and collect
toys all night, Costello said.
Last year, Costello said the
group collected approximately
3,000 toys. This year the goal is to
collect about the same number.
According to the U.S. Census
Bureau, approximately 9 percent
of New Jerseys population is
below poverty status. Also,
Gloucester Countys poverty level
is approximately 7 percent of the
population.
Costello said when the toy col-
lection started it was, and still is,
a way to give back to the commu-
nity.
The first year, students did not
participate in the toy drive.
Costello said it is an important
lesson and experience for the stu-
dents.
Most are very fortunate and
grateful for the things they have,
she said.
Those wishing to donate are
asked to bring new toys to the
school.
Costello said when used toys
are brought to the drive, there
may be a few pieces missing. Its
more exciting for the kids to get a
new toy over used, she said.
The kids want to rip off that
cellophane, Costello said.
When its time for delivery,
Costello said area residents are
taken care of first. The rest of the
toys are donated to local churches
and organizations, she said.
The toys are for the younger
crowd, but teens will also have
gifts set aside for them.
For the older kids we get gift
cards, said Costello. The 15 and
16 year olds deserve something
for Christmas.
Whether its a doll, board
game, or a teddy bear, the class
advisers and students will sort,
wrap and prepare the gifts for de-
livery, she said.
Costello said the collection is
hectic, but its a great bonding
experience for the students,
building character and integri-
ty.
Being teachers, we are in the
business of kids. Hopefully they
will take something from this,
Costello said.

A
lot of things impact the econo-
my, perception perhaps being
one of the greatest influences.
We often hear about consumer confi-
dence and why it is essential to get
things moving in the right direction.
When consumers feel secure in their
job and finances, they are more likely
to open their wallets and spend more.
The added dollars help the economy.
A couple of weeks ago, the New Jer-
sey Business & Industry Association
announced that business confidence in
sales, employment and profits has
climbed to a five-year high. According
to a press release, almost one in five
businesses responding to the groups
annual fall survey anticipate hiring
more workers in 2013. When you sub-
tract the percentage of businesses an-
ticipating job cuts, the net percentage
of companies anticipating the need to
hire additional workers is 8 percent,
the highest in five years.
To put it into more perspective, the
percentage of confident companies in
2005 was 19. In 2009, it was a minus 3.
Now, we have to point out that the
survey took place about a month be-
fore Hurricane Sandy so there proba-
bly is some sentiment change. The bil-
lions of dollars in damage from the
storm no doubt hurt the economy.
But the overall positive business sen-
timent is reason to rejoice.
If the survey is accurate, more peo-
ple will be purchasing goods and serv-
ices next year. Businesses will be mak-
ing more money, and, in turn, will be
hiring more people to get the job done.
Good news such as this has been a
long time coming. Clearly, the economy
isnt zipping along as it was back in the
aforementioned 2005. But it also is
showing a lot of signs of life. More
businesses saying they feel good about
their future is a really big sign.
So let the holiday season carry on.
Its off to a great start. More jobs and a
stronger economy no doubt are on the
holiday wish lists of many residents
this year.
in our opinion
Confidence builds
News that more businesses are confident about the future should be celebrated
Back in business
News that businesses in New Jersey
are feeling more confident in their
futures and anticipate hiring more peo-
ple next year is the holiday gift a great
number of residents wanted.

The program is designed to support

We are grateful to South Jersey Indus-

their ongoing support of the arts, District

We will use this money to attract guest

The leadership and commit-

meetings and social gatherings.
Former American Legion com-
mander Bob Maloney said the fa-
cility promised at last the meet-
ing was the Senior Center.
He said the members of the
Senior Center were not thrilled
with the idea. American Legion
members decided to look at an-
other facility.
We looked at the [second facil-
ity] at some length and found it to
be in such disrepair that it would
cost way too much for us to even
begin to think about fixing it up,
Maloney said.
Room C in the municipal build-
ing was also recommended.
American Legion members voted
against using Room C.
The facility was much smaller
than what we have now and
would limit the growth of the
post, he said.
Legion members voted unani-
mously to remain in the commu-
nity center unless something
comparable is found.
Council president Daniel Mor-
ley said the council was hesitant
when approving public auction of
the building.
The proposal was introduced
late in the summer as an option to
sell the building for budgetary
reasons, he said.
Council agreed to sell the build-
ing via public auction as long as
organizations using the facility
are accommodated.
He said council agreed with the
decision as long as the service is
maintained, and the American
Legion and anyone who uses that
building is facilitated and moved
to other options before we bring
this forward.
That hasnt happened accord-
ing to you and obviously accord-
ing to the administration, Mor-
ley said.
Maloney raised concerns re-
garding the sale of the building to
help balance the 2013 budget.
Eventually, we are going to
lose what we have. Somewhere
along the line we are going to
have to make sure that we pay for
the budget, said Maloney. I have
to question the thought process of
doing that because eventually you
are not going to have buildings
left to do that with.
Business administrator Robert
Smith said the township was en-
couraged by the state and town-
ship auditor to move forward
with selling the building.
Government should not be re-
taining buildings, properties or
land that is not for the purpose of
core government services,
Smith said.
The sale of the building is a
part of an obligation to the tax-
payers of Washington Township,
he said.
The minimum bid price is
$425,000. It may go above that.
What that means to the taxpayers
in 2013 is about $21 to $22 [less in
taxes] per household. It may not
seem like a lot, but we struggle
every year to have a balanced
budget, he said.
Smith said the council does
recognize the veterans of the
American Legion for their serv-
ice in the war and community. He
said the organization also de-
serves accommodation.
We were counting on the ad-
ministration taking care of that
step before they brought this to
us. So we are making a decision
based on the fact that we hoped it
was resolved. Apparently, its less
than resolved, Morley said.

The New Jersey Bankers Asso-
ciation and New Jersey Banker
magazine has named Varuni
Singh, AVP/IT manager/senior
operations specialist and John
Kaufman, treasurer, among its
New Leaders In Banking. The
award recognizes the upcoming
leaders in the banking industry.
Singh and Kaufman were chosen
by a panel of judges, none of who
are active banker, or staff mem-
ber of the New Jersey Bankers
Association (in order to ensure
impartiality). To be eligible for
the award, an individual must be
age 40 or under at any time in
2012, be employed at a New Jersey
bank, be an outstanding employ-
ee, manager or business leader
and have made a notable impact
within their bank or community.
Varuni and John represent
the future of banking. They each
bring a combination of talent, in-
novation and energy that are crit-
ical not just to our bank's future
success, but to the industry as a
whole. We are proud of their ac-
complishments, acting president
and CEO of GFC Bank Tim Hand
said.
The awards ceremony will be
held at the Tropicana Resort in
Atlantic City on Dec. 12. Singh
and Kaufman will also be fea-
tured in the next issue of the
New Jersey Banker magazine,
which will include a special sec-
tion highlighting the class of 2012
New Leaders in Banking.
