FALL 2012 NEWSLETTER

JOHN WAHLBORG TOTAL TENNIS

A WORD FROM JOHNNY

Fall programs have been strong, and we have seen a lot of improvement in all of our students. The staff did a fantastic job, and we look forward to moving forward in the spring. We have had a lot of JW Total Tennis players back in our program with many new faces joining our family. The Junior Program is stacked up with kids dying to get to the next level, and the Adult Program has players of all levels fired up and working hard. We had a full schedule this fall full of tournaments, round robins, cookout play days and many other opportunities to enjoy tennis here at the Lamar Tennis Center. JW Total Tennis is on FIRE!

TIPS
Tennis Parents
If you want a hard job, try being a tennis parent. I have watched many parents challenged with this situation, and most do a good job. With three children of my own who play the game, I have made many mistakes. I have felt all the emotions and seen many successful and not so successful situations over the years. I work with all of our parents to help them through all the obstacles and increase their chance for success. The moment you think you grasp the concept of being a tennis parent, a new challenge always presents itself. -JW

Dos and Donts for Parents

Program Dos and Donts Do watch for a couple of weeks and observe childs intensity level before questioning programs actions Do trust our ability to create players with the right attitudes Dont assume that because your child plays at a certain level he/she needs to be in a different group Dont expect a quick fix--earn it Dont sit on the fence to view practice Do make appointments to get progress reports Do feed balls and play with child with little or no advice Competitive Dos and Donts Do watch children play in tournaments from a safe distance; just be a spectator Dont give constructive criticism after a match; let the professionals Dont intervene in any way with your childs match, except for bad behavior Dont measure your childs improvement in terms of wins or losses. Look for improvement in strokes, attitude, point play, match awareness Dont play the matches yourself. Stay as unemotional as possible. Someone always wins or loses. Dont use rewards or punishment as means to motivate Dont make up excuses for losses Dont carry childs bag Do give child responsibility (match times & equipment) Dont show disappointment after loss or great joy after win; maintain consistent emotion

SPOTLIGHT PLAYERS
Nicholas Watson
Nick loves many sports but his passion is tennis. He has been playing since he was 4-years-old. The Junior Program has brought Nicks game to the tournament level. Johnny has always been very professional, and Nick enjoys getting to know all the players in the groups. Johnny has taught Nick how to set goals. While Nick continues to develop his game, Johnny helps him raise the bar each year. The sportsmanship and competitiveness that Nick develops in Johnnys program has had a positive impact in other areas throughout his life, said Nicks father. Nick is a tennis player, a great sport, enjoys friendship and loves the battle!

Basia Walters
The tennis program supplies Basia with work ethic and discipline that she thinks will be useful in her future. She has created lifelong relationships and helps in providing a competitive atmosphere in a group setting. Johnny always encourages me to try my best no matter what, and my love for tennis has grown tremendously, said Basia. Dedication is an attribute that many desire. Basias parents, Chuck and Heather Walters, drive her from St. Francisville 3-4 days a week to the Lamar Tennis Center to train. I am always asking our players to be willing to do what others are not, and they have been a great example. -JW

The fall brought very good news to our wheelchair tennis program. We grew the number of players, and we are very happy that we have a Professional player coming back to our program, which will help us tremendously as a role model for the younger players in it. World ranked wheelchair tennis player, Shane Theriot, is back in town and working back on his game.
