Lunch savings its in the bag

Lunch as we know it the customary meal between breakfast and dinner did not become the norm until 1850. Before then, most people snacked during the midday if they became hungry and had something handy to nibble on. That changed with the Industrial Revolution and the emergence of the proverbial lunch hour for workers. A familiar sight in New York City in the early 1900s, for instance, was men racing against the clock for a decent meal in a cafeteria, soda fountain, luncheonette or automat (a restaurant consisting of vending machines). But, even then, 30 years before the advent of sliced wrapped bread, some workers economized by bringing their lunch to work. One famous brown bagger was Fred My Three Sons MacMurray. In 1943, he was the highest paid actor in the world, earning $420,000 a year, and yet he habitually brought a bagged lunch to the movie set, featuring a hard-boiled egg. What about you? Do you bring your own lunch to work? About 25% of Americans eat lunch out ve or more times a week. And 60% eat a commercially prepared lunch at least once a week, according to the National Restaurant Association. Todays turbulent economy is sparking renewed interest in brown bagging lunch (even if your bag is made of plastic, vinyl or something else). After all, one of the fundamental laws of saving money is to spend less money. And bringing your lunch can make an appreciable difference even if you do it a couple of times a week. The Internet is rife with frugal bloggers who claim to have saved hundreds, if not thousands of dollars a year, by bringing their lunch. Heres a typical example: Lets say you go to a deli and shell out $10 for a sandwich, chips and soda. At home, you could conceivably make that sandwich with the same ingredients for $2. And the chips and soda may set you back only $1 if you buy these items in bulk. OK, youve now saved $7. Now, if you save $7 for 240 workdays, youll conserve $1,680. How much can you save? Websites, such as bankrate.com, have calculators to help you estimate your own savings. Meanwhile, bringing your own lunch also helps you get the right number of calories from the right kind of food. Plus, your meal doesnt have to be bland. Websites, such as webmd.com, list lots of ideas of how to treat yourself to a lunch that tastes good and is good for you.
