ALCULYMPICS: A Retrospect
By: Zenaida M. Pegtuan, Member, ALCU Secretariat
The Association of Local Colleges and Universities (ALCU) is an independent, voluntary, and non-profit association of locally funded
institutions of higher learning duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission. It officially came into existence on September
10, 1996 with eight (8) charter members. The initial members of the Association have envisioned to differentiate the local colleges and
universities (LCUs) from the state universities and colleges (SUCs). SUCs are nationally funded institutions of higher learning that draw their
student population from all over the country, while LCUs are locally funded institutions getting their students from the local communities
where they are located.
Anchored on ALCU’s vision for every member school to become the fulcrum of community transformation, knowledge generation, and
skills development, it encourages more schools to become members. Now, thirty one (31) strong in number, more LCUs are applying for
membership after recognizing the success of the Association to look into the concerns of LCUs. At present, we have ten (10) school
applicants, credentials of which are still on process because ALCU sees to it that the school is within the bounds of standard requirements
for its existence.
ALCU year 2008-2010 is under the Presidency of the young, energetic, and dynamic president, ATTY. ADEL A. TAMANO, who is also
the President of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. It was during his assumption to the lead post, that the sportsfest, ALCULYMPICS, was
conceptualized as one of the major activities of his term. Other similar activities are underway. It went through a rigorous process which was
set attuned by the three-day sports training at Sitio Lucia Garden Resort last May 2008.
Eighteen (18) ALCU member schools, out of thirty one (31) active members signified to participate as pioneer athletic competitors. All
others are also as interested and competent, but still preparing for more strength, vigor, and financial capabilities for the next
ALCULYMPICS.
With “community-based identity” in administration, President Tamano is garbed with vigor to sustain the stand of locally funded
institutions both academically and physically as well. This became the strong backbone of the ALCULYMPICS which became doubly stronger
with the unconditional support of HON. MA. LOURDES CARLOS FERNANDO, City Mayor of Marikina, who warmly accepted the proposal
of the ALCU President, for the City of Marikina to host the first ever ALCU sportsfest. With Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina leading,
under the Presidency of DR. DALISAY G. BRAWNER, all member schools were set “on the go.”
The history of ALCULYMPICS will unfold from the historic date, January 19-23, 2009 and will keep ever burning when the torch will be
officially relinquished to the succeeding host, no less than MAYOR JEJOMAR BINAY, City Mayor of Makati.
And now, the first sportsfest is born! Let us keep the theme glowing brightly-
