Objectives Common Core State Standard L.1.4c - Identify frequently occurring root words (e.g., look) and their inflectional forms (e.g., looks, looked, looking). Learning Targets Students must know frequently occurring root/base words. E. Procedure 1. Teacher will remind students that a verb tells what someone or something does and explains to students that verbs can be used to tell about the past. 2. Write the following sentences on the board. I play today. I played last week. 3. Ask students to read the sentences aloud. Underline the words play and played, and ask children to tell the difference. Point out that adding the ed ending to play changes the meaning of the action from right now to a time in the past 4. Write on the board and have children read:

5. Ask students which words tell about things that happened in the past and how they know. (Jumped, floated, looked; because they end with ed.) 6. Have students complete these sentences three times, using the words from the board: Now I _____. (jump, float, call) A long time ago I _____. (jumped, floated, called) 7. Display on the ELMO Teaching Transparency #91 Verbs that Tell About the Past. Have each student write N on one side of an index card and P on the other. Then read aloud each sentence on the transparency. Call on volunteers to point to each verb. Tell children to show N if the verb tells about now and P if the verb tells about the past. List the past-tense verbs on the board. Afterward, point out the ed ending in each verb on the board. F. Assessment In their Response Journals, students will summarize what they learned. (Hopefully writing that a verb can tell about the past. Most verbs that tell about the past end with ed) Each student will also write a sentence about the past. There is no assessment rubric for this assignment. I will read students journals entries. By summarizing what they learned and writing a sentence in past tense, it will be clear if students know what a past tense verb is and how to use one in a sentence. G. Reflection Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest to teach? I think teaching students that verbs that tell about the past end with ed will be the easiest part of this lesson. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the most challenging to teach? I think the transparency activity will be most challenging because we havent done this in class before.

What lesson or concept should be taught prior to this lesson? Students should know that a verb tells what someone or something does. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? An extension of this lesson would be for students to apply the skill of identifying past tense verbs properly in their own work. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? Reteach- T Ed. T9 Review- T Ed. Pgs. 149C, 153B, 155B, 155L Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I modified the lesson slightly from the way it was written in the T Ed. I added steps 4-6. I just felt that the some students may need some more practice. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? My challenge was coming up with a unique way to assess students.
