Inventory for Managing Sexually Harmful Behaviors Jane F. Gilgun, Ph.D., LICSW jgilgun@umn.

edu June 2003

The following set of items assesses whether persons who have been sexually inappropriate and abusive have capacities for taking responsibility for these behaviors. In addition, this instrumen also assesses whether persons have capacities for taking precautions not to commit these harmful acts in the future. Scores may be high early in treatment. In treatment and self-help programs, as individuals become more honest, their scores may go down. Over time, as they gain understanding of their own behaviors and develop capacities for managing their behaviors, their scores may go up. Treatment professionals make their own independent observations of how individuals are doing on each of these items. A one-time statement of responsibility does not constitute evidence. Scoring 0=I rarely or never do this 1=I sometimes do this 2=I do this consistently 1. _____ No one else is responsible for my behaviors but me. 2. _____ I take responsibility for my sexual behaviors. 3. _____ I take responsibility for any sexual behaviors that have hurt others. 4. _____ I have my safety plan to help me to deal with situations that are harmful to others and may be harmful to me. 5. _____ I put this safety plan into action whenever I start to think I may be entering into a sexually risky situation. 6. _____ I talk about inappropriate thoughts and feelings over with one or more persons I trust whenever these thoughts and feelings occur. 7. ______I seek to be with positive people whose thoughts, feelings, and actions promote the welfare of others and who take responsibility for their own behaviors 8. ______ I seek to spend time with persons who show a balance between caring for others and caring for themselves. 9. _____ I substitute appropriate thoughts and feelings for inappropriate thoughts and feelings. 10. _____ I talk my hurt and angry feelings over with one or more persons I trust. 11. _____ I understand how my inappropriate behaviors have harmed each person victimized 12. _____ I have sincere remorse about perpetrating harm on others. 13. _____ I accept that I am at risk for perpetrating harm on others at any time in the future. 14. _____ I am watchful for signs that I am in a state of mind where I could perpetrate harm on others. 15. _____ I understand the importance of making amends directly to persons harmed, unless to do so would create new harms. 16. _____ I do things that are my way of making up for the harm I have done, such as volunteer work in the community that promotes the well-being of others. 17. _____ I avoid situations that put me at risk for harming others sexually and otherwise. 18. _____ I believe I deserve special consideration because of the kind of life Ive had. 19. _____ I call myself some pretty harsh names when I start thinking about being sexual in ways that Ive learned are inappropriate Scoring: Add the numerical ratings of the first 17 items. For items, 18 and 19 do reverse scoring. For example if the respondent scores the item 0 reverse the score so that it becomes a 2. The higher the score, the more responsibility the person is taking. This instrument can be used at the beginning, over the course of the intervention, and at the end of intervention, and at follow-up. The scores might be helpful as outcome scores.
