"TUESDAY TALK SERIES" - SESSION XII on 20th Nov, 2012

at Jagan Institute of Management Studies, Sector 5, Rohini, Delhi The continuous faculty interaction programme Tuesday Talk Series session XIIth was organized at Jagan Institute of Management Studies, Sector 5, Rohini New Delhi on Tuesday, 20th November ,2012 at its campus. It is a paper presentation initiative by the academicians to present their research papers or any other similar activity with JIMS fraternity.

The resource person for the day was Ms. Pratima Daipuria (Associate Professor, JIMS). Ms Pratima had presented a paper on Emotional Intelligence and its impact on personal effectiveness which was one of the focus areas of her Ph.D thesis. Ms Pratima started her presentation by elaborating the general phenomenon of emotions and its role in our day to day lives. She gave a general outline of Intelligence and emotional intelligence. She stated and defined Intelligence being typically focused on Analytic Reasoning, Verbal Skills,

Spatial ability, Attention, Memory and Judgement and an ability to understand the complex set of phenomenon of all these factors playing a pivotal role. She further defined intelligence quotient as an index of how people perform on a standardized intelligence test relative to others of the same age. She gave Gardners Theory of Multiple Intelligences which is a mix of Interpersonal and Intrapersonal emotions.

Further she stated that emotional processing may be an essential part of rational decision making. She defined emotions as feelings that generally have both psychological and cognitive elements and that influence behavior. She said that there is a biological purpose of emotions i.e. signaling function which plays an important role in defining emotions.

She also stated the types of emotions i.e. positive and negative. She defined the concept of emotional intelligence i.e. the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves,

and for managing emotions well in us and in our relationships. She stated the emotional competence framework i.e. Self Awareness, Self-regulation, Motivation, Social Competence, Empathy and Social Skills. EI and personal effectiveness is based on factors such as perceiving emotions, using emotions to facilitate thought, understanding emotions & managing emotions.

She further stated that perceiving emotions, using emotions to facilitate thought, understanding emotions and managing emotions are the elements of emotional intelligence. Lastly she stated that emotional Intelligence is based on Personal Factors and Organizational Factors that makes the workplace effective.

Overall, the interaction was an educative experience creating an interactive environment which is a useful experience to be learnt for the staff and the faculty members.
