PASSIVE SOLAR DESIGN

Passive techniques are most commonly utilized in new construction. Unlike new construction this site, presents the challenge of designing passive strategies that will work with a preexisting building.

Daylighting
is the practice of providing natural light to an interior space. This space makes extensive use of the sun as a resource. Using the sun as a main source of lighting not only reduces building operating costs but creates visual appeal and enhances occupancy health and productivity.

East Wall

Floor to ceiling louvres control morning sun and can be found along the eastern wall.

Interior

able light shelves line the exterior of the so uth wall as well as the atrium's so uth facing wall. Tenants have full control over the direction of the sh elves. They can either be used to reflect light further into the building or to provide shade from hot summer sun.

South wall Adjust

Open office workstations make for an open and collaborative working environment as well as allowing daylight to penetrate deeper into the space.

EXTERIOR LIGHT SHELVES

Light shelves are able to be adjusted to respond to the occupants lighting needs

Mechanical Lighting
Daylight sensors measure light within the office and automatically adjust interior LED overhead lighting accordingly. This reduces unnecessary energy costs as well as the need for extra HVAC cooling to offset heat generated from fixtures.

West Wall

The western end of the building will be dedicated to parking. Ramps along the western facade shade the building from afternoon sun.

Operable Windows

O Occupant operated windows allow for natural ventilation. Both lower and upper windows are operable, thus allowing for a stack effect where cooler air is pulled in through the lower windows while exhausting warmer air out through the top level. This simple solution reduces the need for mechanical t ventilation.

Air Distribution
Under floor air distribution will provide conditioned air to occupants from floor grates instead of traditional overhead systems. This efficient system delivers conditioned air directly to the occupants and can greatly reduce heating and cooling costs.
