SPECIESSTATUS: FederallyListedasEndangered GeneticSafetyNetSpecies IUCNRedListRankingCRB1ab(i,iii,iv,v) EndemismOahu CriticalHabitatDesignated

SPECIESINFORMATION:Cyaneast.johnii,amemberofthebellflowerfamily (Campanulaceae),isanunbranchedshrubwithawoodystem30to60cm(12to24in) long.Theleavesarelanceshapedtoinverselylanceshaped,6to13cm(2.4to5.1in) longand1.5to2cm(0.6to0.8in)wide.Theleafedgesarethickened,smoothlytoothed, andcurlunder.Thefloweringstalkis5to15mm(0.2to0.6in)long,with5to20 flowers.Thehairless,whitepetals,3to6cm(1.2to2.4in)long,aresuffusedwithpale violetintheinnersurface.Thisspeciesisdistinguishedfromothersinthisendemic Hawaiiangenusbythelengthoftheleaves,thedistinctlycurledleafmargins,andthe petalcolor. DISTRIBUTION:Cyaneast.johniiwasknownhistoricallyfrom11populationsinthe centralandsouthernKoolauMountainsofOahu.Theoccurrenceislimitedtothe Koolaurange,subpopulationsareseverelyfragmentedandcontinuingdeclinehasbeen observedinthenumberofsubpopulationsandtotalnumberofmatureindividuals. ABUNDANCE:Asof1995,between40and50plantswereknownfromfive populationsWaimanoTrailsummittoAieaTrailsummit,thesummitridgecrest betweenMananaandKipapatrails,betweenthesummitofAieaandHalawatrails, SummitTrailsouthofPoamohocabin,andWailupeWaimanalosummitridge.More recentsurveysindicatethatthisspecieshasprobablybeenreducedtofewerthan20 individuals. LOCATIONANDCONDITIONOFKEYHABITAT:Theremainingpopulationsare foundonCityandCountyofHonolulu,private,andStateLands.Thisspeciestypically growsonwet,windsweptslopesandridgesfrom690to850m(2,260to2,800ft) elevationinhiamixedshrublandorhiauluheshrubland.Associatednativeplant taxaincludenaupakakuahiwi,uki,Bidenssp.(kookoolau),andFreycinetiaarborea (ieie).Clidemiahirta,oneoftheharmfulweedsinHawaii,existsinsomeofthe localities.

THREATS: TheplantsbetweenthesummitofAieaandHalawaTrailarethreatenedby tramplingbyhikers; Habitatdegradationand/ordestructionbyferalpigs; Predationbyrats; Competitionwiththealienplants,includingClidemiahirta; Reducedreproductivevigorduetothesmallnumberofremainingpopulations andindividuals. CONSERVATIONACTIONS:Thegoalsofconservationactionsaretonotonlyprotect currentpopulations,butalsoestablishfurtherpopulationstoreducetheriskof extinction.TheUSFWShasdevelopedarecoveryplandetailsspecifictasksneededto recoverthisspecies.Inadditiontocommonstatewideandislandconservationactions, specificactionsinclude: Surveyhistoricrangeforsurvivingpopulations; Establishsecureexsitustockswithcompleterepresentationofremaining individuals; Augmentwildpopulationandestablishnewpopulationsinsafeharbors. MONITORING: Surveyforpopulationsanddistributioninknownandlikelyhabitats; Monitorplantsforinsectdamageandplantdiseases. RESEARCHPRIORITIES: Developproperhorticulturalprotocolsandpestmanagement; Surveyexsituholdingsandconductmolecularfingerprinting; Conductpollinationbiologyandseeddispersalstudies; Mapgeneticdiversityinthesurvivingpopulationstoguidefuturere introductionandaugmentationefforts.
