Program Notes:
The seasons have been an inspiration for multiple compositions, this being yet
another interpretation of the changes of each year. Each movement holds motives
that I use to capture characteristics of each season. I would want most for each
person who performs and/or listens to this piece to draw their own interpretations
of what is evoked within the piece. Some of the things I chose to include are the
upward sweeping motives in the first movement to emulate the autumn breeze
rushing through the trees, while the light, downward motion representing falling
leaves. The second movement is carried by a downward motion ostinato in the
harpsichord, representative of the dragging on of the post holiday season, as the
entire world itself feels as if it is falling into a large scale hibernation. Then comes
the third movement, the world awakening, animals returning to our view, the plants
starting to take over the vista. The last movement, takes on the ever changing and
forward moving summer months. As the world, nature, and humans rush in different
ways to capture the moments they have in a season that sometimes feels as if it exists
purely to make up for time lost the rest of the year.
