FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

SM45 and SM65

1. What is the difference between the SM45 and SM65? In hardware, the difference is that the SM45 has interfaces and power to suit the IAPS / APS subracks. The SM65 has connectors to suit larger systems. In software, there are no differences. The same software is used for both products. The software recognizes what product it is working in, and interacts appropriately with the interfaces. 2. Arent the SM45 and SM65 just a SM40 and SM60 with Ethernet? Yes, the operation, control functions, interfacing and alarms are very close. But there are some changes and enhancements: a) The SM45 and SM65 have a real time clock. This provides accurate timing for data and event logging. Equalize and Battery test now use the clock to start at a particular time of day (like the SM50), rather than a fixed interval from the last test (like the SM40/60). b) The event log now has 10,000 records (not 100 as per the SM40/60). c) There is a periodic data log, also with 10,000 records. d) Also, its more than just Ethernet its SNMP, web. 3. I want to configure my SM45 and SM65. What is the best way to do it? See the SM65 Handbook or APS Installation Guide (SM45 version) for full details. First, make sure you have the latest DCTools. You have these options: a) Serial Use a null modem cable to connect to the front panel and use a serial connection with DCTools, or b) Ethernet Go straight to using DCTools over Ethernet. Do this: Set the IP address Get an IP address and netmask from your network administrator. Apply power to the SM45/65.
