In Sharon Township the election broke up a husband and wife team. James Hopkins easily won a position as a township trustee, but his wife Katharyn Spiegel, who was also running for a trustee spot, was edged out by Patricia Farmer, who entered the race late, running as an independent. Hopkins has been serving as chairman of the township mineral license
board, while Spiegel has been serving as a trustee. She was appointed to the position after a recall campaign ousted three trustees last year. Farmer is retired from Ford, and her husband runs a gravel quarry. This will be her first elected office. Im surprised, but Im glad, Farmer said. She has lived in Sharon Township for 14 years. Current township trustee Peter Psarouthakis ran unopposed for the supervisor position. Chelsea Mikel ran unopposed for township clerk, having ousted incumbent Teri Aiuto in the primary with a three-vote margin. Brian Simons ran unopposed for the treasurer position. He is the current
treasurer. Psarouthakis said there are no plans for changes in the township per se. There will be some administrative changes, he said. If youd talked to me a year or two ago Id have a lot to tell you, but Im happy to report that things are pretty calm and boring now. The township is in good shape. In Freedom Township the election might be called calm and boring. All of the candidates ran unopposed, and most were familiar faces. Dale Weidmeyer returned as supervisor. Dennis Huehl and Dan Schaible returned as trustees. The clerk candidate, Jennifer Alexa, had previously been elected to the
position, but had temporarily stepped down in August, and her position was filled by an appointee. She ran unopposed for a new term. The current Freedom Township treasurer Shirley Haeussler is retiring, however. Newcomer Rudy Laher ran unopposed for that position, after beating Ken Siler in the primary. If Shirley were to run I wouldnt pursue the office, Laher said. I think all the individuals on the board are doing a very good job. Manchester Township saw the end of an era, as current supervisor Ron Mann did not run, after 24 years on the job. He will be replaced by Gene DeRosset, who ran unopposed, after securing a

The lines were long and the electorate excited at a polling station in Manchester Tuesday morning. For many, this was their first time voting and many were eager, others nervous, as they approached the table to sign their names and receive their ballots. The voters went into the booths, picked their candidate and got a sticker to tell the world they had participated. Then they dutifully formed a line and waited for their teacher to march them back to class. This polling station was at Luther C. Klager Elementary School and the voters were the students and staff who were participating in a mock presidential election. Second-grade teachers Mary Fielder and Amie Clark and their students hosted the election for the school. The mock vote was part of the social studies

This is the third presidential election Fielder has overseen, she said. Fielders students spent the day Monday making Uncle Sam hats and getting ready for Election Day. They created poll books for everyone to sign and ballots with images of President Barack Obama and challenger Gov. Mitt Romney for the students to check off. The classes built three voting booths adorned with patriotic and political symbols in a red, white and blue motif. After voting, the students gave their folded ballots to be counted and then received an I Voted sticker, much like their parents likely got at a real polling station. A kindergarten class and a fourth-grade class were the first to vote. The
