People are talking:

Hartwick, a small private liberal arts college, is at the forefront of a recent upswing in colleges that, spurred by the recession and concerns over crushing college debt, are encouraging students to save money by shortening the time it takes to earn a degree. Hartwick College launched a three-year degree in fall 2009, available in more than two dozen majors. The program started with 18 students, is up to 47 students and is on target to add 40 more in fall, making it possibly the largest such program in the nation. Hartwick says its program is distinctive, because it wont require online courses or summer school (so students can still do internships). Students will take an expanded course load each semester, plus courses during Hartwicks January term. Only a handful of majors are excluded. Although designed to cut costs, the Hartwick program will also maintain its rich educational experience Students who participate will take 40 rather than 30 credits a year, keeping their summers free for study abroad, internships, or employment. Service learning, athletics, and other activities will still be accessible to three-year students The Chronicle of Higher Education, February 24, 2009

Hartwick Colleges Three-Year Degree Program saves students time and money, without sacrificing the full college experience. Its that simple.

Lets talk money.

You want to attend the kind of private, liberal arts college that will put you on the fast track to professional successbut that kind of education is expensive. So four years ago, Hartwick was one of the first schools in the nation to realize theres nothing magical about taking four years for a bachelors degree. You can do it in three years, and save as much as $40,000 in the process. Less upfront cost and less debtan intriguing idea. So we created a program to complete your degree in three years instead of four and made sure you wouldnt miss out on any of the activities so important to your college experience. The idea quickly caught the attention of the national news media. More importantly, it caught the attention of our students. Currently, about 1 out of every 10 entering Hartwick student will complete his or her degree in just three years and save a ton of money in the process.

An exceptional education.
Hartwicks Liberal Arts in Practice curriculum is what makes the Three-Year Bachelors Degree Program work. Its a unique combination of traditional liberal arts study and experiential learning. That means youll have great classroom experiences and youll make that learning real by getting into the field to study abroad, complete internships, and serve your community. Our 11-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio means youll get to know our expert faculty personally. Youll work with them on the kinds of laboratory and research opportunities that undergraduates rarely get to experience. Hartwicks Three-Year Degree Program was developed in close collaboration with our faculty. Their expertise and our flexible curriculum are a few of the reasons our Three-Year Degree works at Hartwick while some other schools have failed.

Added benefits.
As a Three-Year Degree student, youll graduate sooner with less debt. Youll also get priority course registration, special academic advising, and the option of a special living-learning residential environment.

How it works.
You take a few extra courses (40 credits per year instead of 30) and you finish a year early. In the process, you save an entire years tuition and get to grad school or work even sooner. You can earn a Hartwick degree and enjoy every aspect of campus life in three years, saving a lot of money along the way. No online courses, no summer school (except if youre in nursing), no strings. Three-Year Degree students are motivated and hard-working, so they dont make a lot of compromises. Theyre on our sports teams, and in our clubs. Theyre performing on stage, hanging with friends, or living at our Pine Lake Environmental Campus. www.hartwick.edu/threeyeardegree

After you go youll never be the same.

Its the full Hartwick experience.

You can still be involved The Three-Year in everything. Program is unique, My parents are paying for my and its realistic.
education Im very lucky. They never pushed me to go into the Three-Year Degree Program for financial reasons, but when I did they were excited. I have a pretty substantial merit scholarship, but the Three-Year Program helps so much more. I feel like Im capable of going into law school without a ton of extra debt. Im definitely prepared for the next step. Theres no doubt Im bummed out to leave this place and leave my friends, but I think Im ready to spread my wings, as clich as that sounds. As a Three-Year student you dont miss any of the opportunities four-year students have. You can still be involved in internships, clubs, activities, and athletics everything.

A complete College experience.

As a pioneer in the three-year degree model, Hartwick College recognizes that students should have the option to pursue cost- and time-saving options when earning a high-quality bachelors degree. The growth and success of Hartwicks Three-Year Degree program clearly illustrates the viability of, and demand for, this innovative educational approach. At Hartwick, we have seen no evidence that Three-Year Degree students have a less meaningful or substantial experience than our four-year students. They collaborate with professors on research, study abroad, participate in clubs and organizations, perform in college productions, and spend time with friends. They are having the complete college experience.
Hartwick College President Dr. Margaret L. Drugovich

Saving money is definitely a good thing. Getting on to my masters a year faster with only three years of loans? Thats very helpful. The Three-Year Program is unique, and its realistic. If youre willing to put in the time and take an extra class or two a semester, youre going to show initiative and that translates to doing well in the job market. It is a little more work than the four-year student has, but its only a class or two more a semester. Im saving a ton of money, getting to my masters sooner, and getting a job sooner. It saves a lot of money in the long run, and you still get to have fun and hang out with your friends. Its the real college experience.
