There should also be a hotly contested race in Ward Two, where Joe Mickens and Susan Mackay will do battle. It will be interesting to watch how this plays out over the next month or two. Other races should also develop, as the big day of decision draws closer. And watch the activities of the police department closely. Even though The Real Story doesnt cover crime with the same intensity as other publications, how many times can a certain politician insert himself into the legal entanglements of his family members when they get arrested? It is nothing short of incredible, and if that person also loves to meddle with the police department, it should make everyone uncomfortable. It is going to be interesting to witness the next City Council meeting. As most people know, by now, two officers were accused of saying some unkind things about the Mayor and his family after the Mayors daughter was arrested. As usual, the mayor is in the middle of it, even though his adult family member is the person arrested. If this is even remotely true, it is a CONFLICT of interest in the HIGHEST regard. If Robert Smith has taken the extremely unusual step of listening to the police recording knowing his daughters arrest was the topic, it shows a lack of ethics that is indisputable. If he did so because he was concerned that they said something about him, it is even worse. He might not like it, but he is the mayor and listening to police recordings about himself and his family is a conflict of interest. Period. So, when the officers are taken to be disciplined at the next council meeting, hopefully, the city council will look into whether the mayor committed these acts of using his position to obtain

In the Oct. 19, 2012 edition of the At Weeks End feature on our website, we celebrated our one year anniversary of being on the web, amongst other topics. In that column, we reiterated that The Real Story will continue to be there as a Watch Dog for the community. It is our most important function. And with that in mind, a few topics need to be revisited as events unfold.

It has been amazing to see the good, the bad and ugly of local government. There are times that it would be funny, except that it is our tax dollars at work. And the community is not always getting their moneys worth.

We are about to enter an election season and it will be interesting to see what is in store for the nation and for Columbus. Though the Presidential Election is extremely important, The Real Storys focus will be on local politics. And, come January, you can bet that it is going to heat up in Columbus.

It will be amazing to watch. The betting money is that Mayor Smith will have opposition in the next Mayors race. And as Ricky use to say to Lucy, he will have a lot of explaining to do. His bullying and all-around interference in the everyday operation of every city function is a reality. And whether or not his supporters want to admit it, it is a fact.

And the other fact is, as the election gets closer and Smith has to go in public and speak to a large audience, his interference -especially with the police department - will be an issue. As a matter of fact, it would be wonderful if, like the Presidential Elections, there would be televised debates between Smith and his opponents. It would be great TV. And, The Real Story would be there to cover it.

There was and is nothing new in the idea.Advertising executives, masters of subtle persuasion, have sold usproducts based on the promise ofeverything but the benefits of the product itself. The troublesome proposal of Sunstein and Thaler is the opt-out clause.Product manufacturers and service providers, based on solid psychological research, understand that the loss of something is perceived as far worse than never having had it in the first place.Rebates and coupons are staple items of marketers because people pay full freight up front, get used to the item, and infrequently do the cumbersome paperwork to be returned a few dollars. Opt-in to a particular medical, insurance, or savings plan and once you see the benefits, you are unlikely to optout.Opt-in, Opt-out is far more successful in confirming a consumer choice than simply asking customers Would you like to buyX? Moneyback guarantees are staple marketing ploys. The charge of manipulation comes when the offering party makes it easier for you to pick his choice rather than the one you might choose upon reflection. It mightbe opt-in style: Pick Plan B and if you dont like it you can opt out, or simply placing the Plan B choice at the top of the list.Marketers have worked tirelessly not only to manipulate your purchase of one product, but to choose the most profitable from among many.
Still, its all well and good, but the authors cynically say that this freedom of choice is libertarian in origin. Giving people choice is the right thing to do to protect individual liberty. They go on to say that this manipulation is also paternalistic; for yes, the government does know better than the general public. This avowed paternalism is what is most disturbing and distasteful about the book: Their entire line of argument - that people frequently make decisions that are not in their own best interest, that often free markets and open competition will tend to exacerbate rather than mitigate the effects of human frailty [and that government must step in toright these wrongs]is deeply subversive of standard free-market, anti-regulation, small-government thinking, but supportive of many interventionist inclinations, say the authors. Nudge is a long book (almost 300 pages) to state the obvious and then come to the most insidious conclusion.Read it to better understand the psychology of marketing, but be prepared for the predictable progressive conclusions.

A presidential election is almost upon us. But, if you have young children or grandchildren, you know whats really important this week is Butterfingers, not ballots, and Pop Rocks, not the popular vote. Yes, its Halloween time again, which means youll see plenty of witches and vampires scurrying around. Youll no doubt find these
characters more amusing than frightening, but you dont have to look far to find things that are a bit more alarming such as these scary investment moves: Paying too much attention to the headlines - Some headlines may seem unnerving, but dont abandon your investment strategy just because the news of the day appears grim.
You cant always make the perfect investment choices. But by steering clear of the scary moves described above, you can work toward your longterm goals and hopefully avoid some of the more fearsome results.

show themselves to us. In this neighborhood, not only are they seen, but many are stopping in for a friendly visit. There are two houses here whose spirit-residents are not content to remain in ghostly isolation. They like to reveal themselves to visitors and make social calls to their next-door neighbors. The Lincoln Home (714 Third Avenue South) andAmzi Love Home (305 7th Street South) have much in common. They are connected not only by a lovely garden, but are also owned by married couple Brenda and Sid Caradine. The Lincoln home is operated, these days, as a bed and breakfast by charming hostess, Brenda. However, she must share her duties as the lady

of the house. This home has a soft spirit who drifts from room to room, checking on her guests. She has been seen by Brenda, and has also looked in on guests in a downstairs bedroom. Her presence is comforting; not at all scary. This ghost is certainly no threat to the B & B guests. She is just making sure everyone is comfortable in this beautifully restored home. Just next door is Amzi Love. Sid Caradine is the seventh generation of his family to live in this gem. The house, built in 1848, still contains the original furnishings from that period. It is open for tours, yearround (Call(662) 328-5413for times and prices.). If you are lucky, you just might get to see Mr. Sid in authentic period costume, portraying his great grandfather General Amzi Love.
The Southside of Columbus probably has more ghosts than almost any place on Earth. They make themselves known in many ways. We all are familiar with MissNellie ofErrollton, who etched her name on a parlor window with her engagement ring. Some ghosts speak to us. Some are pranksters who hide our keys, or flicker the lights and other electrical devices, in our homes. But, the most dramatic are the ones who actually

A lovely, but transparent, woman floats from the kitchen door, near the rear of the home, and makes her way to The Lincoln Home, next door. She has been seen filtering through cars parked along the curb, and then turning toward and entering The Lincoln Home. This visitor needs no doorbell, because she just passes through the walls and locked doors as if they did not exist. Oh well, only a good friend is allowed such privileges. These two guests are easy to please. They require no offer of sweet tea, just a friendly greeting to let them know that they are welcome. Happy Halloween, ghost lovers!

Posing As An Adult
Half-empty or Completely Empty?
I am not much of an optimist. I really try to be, and if you know me well, I like to laugh and make others laugh. However, when it comes to being positive - as when people always say Look on the bright side - thats where I run into trouble. Im sarcastic by nature; I come by it honestly, as my father was the king of sarcasm, and even if I had tried to fight it, I think it was a foregone conclusion. Optimism has been on my mind lately, as it seems that everything around us tends toward the bleak. Im sick of the utter negativity surrounding the presidential election. I know we have about one week before thats decided, but my pessimism tells me the negativity wont go away. Its like when I lived in Philadelphia, Pa., and the Eagles went to the Super Bowl. I knew whether they won or lost, there would be riots downtown, which is why I enjoyed that game from the comfort of my suburban apartment. No matter who ends up being the leader of our nation in January, its not like snapping your fingers or flipping a switch. Are gas prices miraculously going to go down to $2 per gallon? Is unemployment going to magically disappear? Will the world love us again? The answer to these questions is almost assuredly no. I really watched the final presidential debate and was struck, again, by their complete inability to simply answer a question in a way that makes sense. I, more than anyone, actually had a great deal of optimism when Obama took office in 2008. I cried at his acceptance speech.
I thought we finally had a leader who cared and wanted to do good work for all the people, not just the million-dollar donors and lobbyists. Thats what optimism gets you: disappointment. In the meantime, our other option is a person who has no idea what being a regular person is and insulted half of the country, including me. I had to get student loans, yes, because college is impossible to afford, and if you want a good job, you have to have a college degree. However, you now have the added bonus of possessing a college degree, yet still earning less than someone who might come from Romneys background and happen to know the right people. Its very discouraging, and decidedly more so when one of the people running for the highest office in the land doesnt get that. So, you see, Im a pessimist because sometimes its too damn exhausting to be an optimist. Im tired from waiting for the American Dream while working alongside my husband to achieve it. Im tired from watching my college-educated friends struggle to achieve it, and Im tired from knowing that the money weve paid into the system while trying to find this dream might not be there when we need it. I would ordinarily say go vote, because its your civic duty, and its a privilege, and thats still true, but this year I say, sadly, that it doesnt make much of a difference either way.

Everybodys doing a brand new dance, now. Come on baby, do the loco-motion. I know youll get to like it, if you give it a chance, now. Come on baby, do the loco-motion. My little baby sister can do it with me. Its easier than learning your ABCs, so come on, come on, do the loco-motion with me! What a mega classic! I can remember dancing around in my Barbie pajamas as I sang the Locomotion by Little Eva! Speaking of locomotion, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Locomotion is the act or power of moving from place to place. That definition fits us busy fashionistas perfectly. It is important to have a key piece in our wardrobe that can take us anywhere in a snap, because of our full schedules! My top locomotion pick for this season is a fabulous raspberry pink sweater skirt. By changing up and layering, I was able to create two stellar looks - one for work and one for play. An outfit perfect for play and totally pretty in pink is a vintage high-collared button up and a darling raspberry hue sweater-knit skirt, paired with neutral-tone suspenders and retro-style sneakers. So fabulous and comfortable, this ensemble works great for looking absolutely ravishing on a quick coffee run, movies with friends, or a day of antiquing! Sporting an adorable animal motif sweater with a precious pink vintage high-collared blouse and a sweater skirt is a marvelous way to look professional, yet fun, at the same time! Pair this spectacular ensemble
with classic black, closed-toe stilettos and BAM! There you have it! You are ready to go from a day at the office to dinner in an instant! VIP Tips on Work to Play: 1. Purr-fect Sweaters!: Animal-motif sweaters are huge, right now! Pair your sweater with tailored separates in luxurious fabrics, such as brocade, leather, or menswear tweed. To add a grown-up edge, opt for suede platforms or booties with a high heel, says InStyle Magazine, August 2012 issue. 2. Playful Hemline!: Find a playful hemline skirt that flatters your figure. When in doubt, choose an A-line skirt! An A-line is universally flattering, says Glamour magazine.

DEAR PAWS CORNER: Were planning to adopt a puppy in the next few weeks. Is there anything we should do to prepare our house to welcome our new dog when he or she arrives? -Clarice H., New Orleans DEAR CLARICE: First of all, congratulations! Adopting a pet from
the shelter is a great choice. Second, there are many things you can do ahead of time to make your house dogfriendly. The shelter may have some information to guide you as well, but here are some basic things to add to your list: Pet-proof your house. In much the same way as parents need to childproof their house, pet owners need to make dangerous items difficult to access. Things that can be chewed on, that can splinter or break into small pieces, should be kept off the floor and off things that are puppy height (like the coffee table).
Set up a living area for your puppy, in a comfortable spot out of the way of foot traffic. Place its pet bed there, along with chew toys. Have your dogs leash, collar and other items ready and waiting. Youll want to purchase these after youve chosen your puppy but before bringing it home. Set up a file among your household papers specifically to hold your dogs adoption information, shot record, registration and other petrelated data. You also should keep a copy of these papers in a separate
location. Include your new pet in family emergency planning. If you have an evacuation or shelter-in-place kit, add dog food, treats and other essential items.

Its raining cats and dogs out there How do you know? I just stepped in a poodle! Pity the poor French poodle, the butt of so many jokes, through the years. This breed has been a cheap shot for laughs, with their traditional frou-frou hairdo. Did you know that all those silly looking puffs of fur were designed with function in mind? And, in spite of its name, this dog is not even French! The breed originated in Germany, where it was a workingclass dog, used as a water retriever. The iconic Poodle clip was designed by hunters to help the dogs move more easily through the water. The tufts of hair left on the body are meant to protect and insulate vital organs and joints which are susceptible to cold. Somehow, poodles have gotten the reputation as dull lap dogs; little more than a charming accessory for silly old ladies. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Poodles are actually one of the smartest breeds. They are considered quite high in intelligence, second only to the Border Collie. until the husband returned eight hours later. Then the dog began limping, an obvious ploy for sympathy. Now thats smart!

An internet search will reveal many breeders anxious to sell you one of these delightful companions. Prices range from around $300$1,500, with an average of about $600. However, like any breed that you may be interested in, check with your local shelter, or a rescue organization. One of the beautiful things about a rescue dog is that they are usually already housebroken and are over the puppystage of chewing everything in sight. So, do consider a Poodle as a furry friend, but prepare yourself for a long list of corny jokes. Here is just one more: What dog loves to take bubble baths? A shampoodle!

Taking Tyler Perry seriously in the role of the forensic psychologist that Morgan Freeman originated in the routine thriller Kiss the Girls (1997) and reprised in Along Came A Spider (2001) may challenge the actors fans who cannot envisage him without a wig and a dress.
outlandish change in his cinematic modus operandi. A dastardly contract killer who calls himself the Butcher of Sligo (Matthew Fox of Vantage Point) enjoys torturing the victims when he is neither shooting nor blasting them to smithereens.Motor City Detective Dr. Alex Cross (Tyler Perry), his longtime friend & colleague Detective Tommy Kane (Edward Burns of Saving Private Ryan) and Detective Monica Ashe (Rachel Nichols of Conan the Barbarian) set out to apprehend this felon after he kills a wealthy woman, Fan Yau (Stephanie Jacobsen), and guns down three bodyguards. This reprobate shears off most of Fan Yaus fingers before he extracts the information from her that he needs about his primary target. The Butcher of Sligo sets his sights on an affluent Frenchman, Leon Mercier (Jean Reno of Armored), who dreams about revitalizing Detroit.Cross admits that they are contending with an expert who has already figured out every move that the authorities will make to catch him. When Cross and company confront the Butcher initially in a high-rise where the villain has targeted white-collar types, the police prove they arent the usual doughnut munchers.Although the cunning killer eludes the police, Kane draws blood when one of his bullets nicks the bad guy in the shoulder.Unfortunately, the authorities cannot make a positive identification because this bad man has no criminal record.Later, Cross discovers that not even the man who hired the killer can identify him. After they find charcoal sketches that the
killer plants at the crime scene, the cops nickname him Picasso.Cross is surprised when this homicidal maniac goes after his unit and himself. One of the biggest surprises occurs when the killer botches an attempt on Cross, but not before he ices somebody close to our hero. Along Came A Spider scenarists Marc Moss and freshman scribe Kerry Williamson have adapted James Pattersons twelfth novel and shun many of the usual cop movie clichs.Half of what makes Alex Cross so entertaining is the casting of Perry as an action hero.He delivers a believable, compelling performance as a tough Detroit detective pitted against a ruthless assassin.Director Rob Cohen handles the cat-and-mouse antics between the hero and the villain with verve. While Perry acquits himself well in the role, Matthew Fox steals the show as a scary killer who tools around in a Cadillac.Reportedly, the former Lost TV star dropped about 40 pounds to make himself look not only emaciated but also callous. In one amusing scene, as Picasso, the villain kills three innocent bystanders who try to bully him.Cohen stages a terrific close-quarters fight between Cross and the villain in the rafters of the decrepit Michigan Theater.Compared with the two earlier Freeman movies, Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider, Alex Cross emerges as a superior saga.Nevertheless, Perry isnt half the actor that Morgan Freeman is, but this new franchise may allow Perry to display his serious side as an actor.
Aside from his most recent Madea comedy, Madeas Witness Protection, Perry has been testing the waters for such a move.He made a cameo appearance in the Star Trek franchise reboot, and he played it straight in his own epic Good Deeds.Good Deeds wasnt the standard-issue, Perry potboiler.Religious themes and comedic tropes were conspicuous by their absence in this entertaining melodrama.
Alex Cross (*** out of ****) represents Perrys boldest move to alter his image.Actually, the New Orleans native doesnt appear as out of place as an action hero as many of his fans and critics proclaim.Helmed by Rob Cohen, who directed The Fast and the Furious, xXx, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon, Alex Cross qualifies as a gritty, fast-paced, no-holds-barred, above-average police procedural with the title character committing criminal acts to thwart a sadistic assassin.Basically, when he isnt channeling Sherlock Holmes with his shrewd insights into the behavior of others, Perry strives to be like Dirty Harry Callahan.Indeed, our guntoting hero breaks the very laws that he was sworn to uphold so he can nab a vicious sociopath who craves to inflict pain.Youve got to give Perry credit for having the nerve to make such an

The four-star prospect (24/7 Sports rating) doesnt claim to have a favorite, but he does prefer one conference, stating, Im trying to play SEC ball. SEC is the next step until the NFL. Strong is regarded as the consummate team guy, but most big-time receivers have to be a little selfish on the field. The 64, 205-pound receiver discussed how he turns the switch on, when he is on the gridiron: I want to do everything well. I know if its a run play, I want to get my man out of the play; so, what Im doing is trying to block him, says Strong.
so if someone drops a pass, Im telling them to pick their head up; get it the next play. If you love the game of football, you cant be selfish. Strong does bring a bit of flair to the game - sometimes dancing after touchdowns. Strong says, I just like to be comfortable; if Im comfortable, I get the swag going. That should be ok with the coach. Sometimes a coach may not be cool with it; so, I might bring it down a notch. The electric receiver, obviously, will bring a lot to any team that signs him, but he will come from a different culture than most of his teammates. Instead of being concerned about a potential culture clash, its something that he looks forward to experiencing. I kind of look forward to stuff like that. In Philly, everyone is pretty much the same. So, when I go out to the West Coast, I meet people with a different type of swag. I get to learn that and take it with me, Strong said.
Strong built off of the first game, amassing 37 catches, 878 yards and 12 touchdowns in six games, and leading the California Community College Athletic Association with 146.3 receiving yards per game.

#WeBelieve - at least that was the hash tag and battle cry leading up to Mississippi States showdown with Alabama. Bulldog fans from Starkville to Turkey flooded the Twitterverse with the saying - showing their support. Well, they found out the hard way that the game has to played, at some point. At 7:45 p.m. on Saturday the Bulldogs fan base, players and coaches found out what the rest of the nation already knew: Alabama is who we thought they are. From the opening drive, the Crimson Tide asserted their dominance. They marched the ball down the field methodically, culminating with an 11-yard scamper by superstar true freshman T.J. Yeldon. Alabama showed big-play ability on the second drive, as A.J. McCarron connected with Kenny Bell on a 57-yard bomb, beating AllAmerican cornerback Johnthan Banks, who claimed that the touchdown was the result of busted coverage. But Ive watched football for a long time; Banks was in man coverage and just got burned for a touchdown. The team captain should be more accountable, not blame his teammates. Although the defense eventually settled down, forcing three straight three-and-outs in the second quarter, the Bulldog offense couldnt move the ball versus the #1 defense in the country. Supposedly, big-time running back Ladarius Perkins was stymied by Alabamas stout defense. As the game continued, the Bulldogs just looked overmatched and out of their league. Desmond Howard looked almost prophetic. In his pregame prediction, he was asked whether Mississippi State had a chance, and the

Two of their pupils, sophomore defensive back Cody Prewitt and junior defensive back Dehendret Collins are tied for fifth in the conference in interceptions.
Perhaps it was the late legendary Alabama football coach Paul Bear Bryant who once said that in order to have success, you must surround yourself with good people. Not only does it mean good players, it means good coaches as well. When he was named Ole Miss Head Football Coach, Hugh Freeze took that adage to heart when he began assembling his coaching staff. When Freeze set out to hire a staff, he wanted men who had knowledge, along with experience. That was no more evident than when he hired his offensive and defensive coordinators.
To run the offense, Freeze hired long-time college coach Dan Werner. This is the second time that Werner has coached at Ole Miss. In fact, he and Freeze served on then-Head Coach Ed Orgerons staff during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. Werner was offensive coordinator, and Freeze was wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. In all, Werner has over 28 years of coaching experience. Werners tutelage has been beneficial not only to sophomore quarterback Bo Wallace, but to the unit as a whole. Wallace is currently sixth in the Southeastern Conference in total offense, averaging 228 yards per contest. As a unit, the Rebels offense is sixth in the conference and 41st in the national in passing efficiency. Ole Miss has averaged over 400 yards of total offense in all games played to date, and has amassed over 300 yards rushing in two games, those coming against Tulane and the University of Texas-El Paso. The season is about halfway complete, yet Ole Miss has already surpassed not only the total number of wins from last year, they have already scored more points and touchdowns than the 2011 team. That is another indication of how much Werner has contributed to the early success Freeze and the Rebels have enjoyed.
As a unit, the Rebel defenders have also put up some good numbers, as they held two teams - Tulane and UTEP - to under 50 yards rushing each. A redshirt freshman, Denzel Nkemdiche, is tied for third in the conference and 31st nationally with It takes more than offense to win 1.29 tackles for loss per game. His 2.0 football games, though - especially tackles for loss per game against SEC in the rough-and-tumble league foes ranks him second among league that is the Southeastern Conference. players. went with people that he knew had as much experience and knowledge as the offensive coaches. CoDefensive Coordinator Dave Wommack served in the same capacity for Freeze last year at Arkansas State. Wommack possesses over 30 years of experience coaching in the collegiate ranks, including stops at Arkansas, South Carolina and Southern Mississippi. He works primarily with the defensive backfield, with the safeties being his specialty. Serving as Co-Defensive Coordinator is Wesley McGriff, who also coaches the cornerbacks. McGriff came to Ole Miss after a stint at Vanderbilt, which went to a bowl game in 2011, during his tenure there.
the defensive side is that Ole Miss is fourth among SEC teams with 2.71 quarterback sacks a game, which also ties them for 21st in the country. In their 30-27 loss to Texas A&M, the defense forced a seasonhigh six turnovers - four fumbles and two interceptions - against a team that only registered one turnover in its previous four games. In their 33-14 loss to topranked Alabama, the Rebels held the Crimson Tide to a season-low in points scored, as well as 305 total yards of offense, including 180 yards passing.

When one hears the words roller derby, a variety of images some, possibly, of a negative nature may come to mind. Perhaps one image could be of women on roller skates performing violent acts during a bout on the rink, which causes bodies to become bloody, bruised and battered. That is not the image the sport conveys today, especially with the Golden Triangle areas only roller derby team, the Mississippi Brawl Stars. Shannon Haupt, a member of the Brawl Stars for three years, said that this sport is a contact sport, but defies the image that has been portrayed in movies. It is a contact sport, but not what some people may think it is. I see it as a great stress reliever, she said.
