Study Programme : English Education Code : MKB5211 Course : Listening III Credit Hour : 2 SKS Semester :2 Prerequisite : Listening III Academic Year : 2009/2010 Course Description : Listening is the activity of paying attention to and trying to get meaning from something we hear. To listen successfully to spoken language, we need to be able to work out what the speakers mean when they use particular words in particular ways of particular way on particular occasions and not simply to understand the words themselves. The skills of understanding English spoken at normal speed can be acquired only through practice in listening to English spoken at normal speed. The listeners sometimes will hear very rapid speech, and at other times somewhat slower varieties of delivery. The listener will hear interruptions, unfinished sentences, awkward or incorrect grammatical constructions, people talking simultaneously, ellipsis, strange logic and a wide range of emotional and intellectual voices. In this course, two listening skills are taught. Top down processing skills requires student to use background knowledge, the situation, context, and topic to arrive at comprehension though using key word and predicting; Bottom up processing skill requires student to decode individual words in the message to derive meaning. Both of those skills are used in listening for gist, listening for detail, at inferring meaning from context. The topics of this course will deal with contemporary and adult topic that are of interest and relevance to learners of different cultural background. Information is presented that can serve as basis for cross cultural comparison.
