INDUSTRIAL PROJECT REPORT ON GRANITE (MARBLE) POLISHING BATTI (BAR) Granite is a naturally occurring "platonic" rock with visible

crystalline structure. The common colours having commercial value are black, grey and pink. In order to enable mining of granite in a "viable" manner, the deposits should be sizeable at a single location near the earth surface and should not have excess joints / discontinuities. At present, in India, there are 115 small scale units and 5 medium scale granite processing units. The number of units under 100% EOU scheme is around 6. Most of the units are in the Southern States. Exports of raw granite blocks and processed granite products have grown during the seventies and eighties at a phenomenal rate. The main uses of granite are, building material for use in flooring and wall cladding purposes in residential and commercial complexes. Exports from India got a "shot in the arm" when the reserves of the famed Swedish Black Granite became scarce. The building industry worldwide requires about 120 mn.cubic metres of granite per annum and the monument and ornament industry requires about 10 mn.cubic metres per annum. The total supply of Granite by all countries is about 100 mn.cubic metres for the building industry and 7 mn.cubic metres for the monument and ornament industry. Thus, at present, there is a worldwide shortage of granite slabs and materials. The current market share of India in the world granite market is less than 4%. A substantial volume of this being raw granite blocks which require further processing. Therefore, there exists good scope for increasing the volume as well as the share of value added exports. The industrial use of it is a comparatively newer use. It is in the field of inspection and metrology, primarily for surface plates and of late quite extensively in coordinate measuring machines for its base, columns, guide ways etc. It has been used as material for straight edges, V-blocks and measuring squares. It is also used in paper mills as calendar rolls. The advantage of granite tile is its wear and tear resistance. It being a seasoned material is dimensionally very stable. Its sp. gr. is around 30 which makes it lighter compared to other material. It has high rigidity and its coefficient of expansion is low compared to metals. However, it is very responsive to environmental temperature fluctuation.
