For the second year, 165 men came together to enjoy great food, comradery, giveaways, and listening to a keynote speaker. This year the crowd was not disappointed. The night started off with a delicious meal from Moonlight Barbecue with their famous Burgoo. Crossland Outfitters own Shawn Veitz was the keynote speaker of the night. Shawn shared his testimony on how Gods creation made him contemplate the existence of God. It was then, through a frightening experience with a mountain lion that, Shawn learned the importance and power of Gods Word. Shawn chal-

lenged men of all ages to contemplate the existence of God the next time that they are in the woods. Shawn described the importance of living for God and placing ones faith in Jesus Christ. Shawn ended the night stating that real men are not those who do brave things. Real men are those who point their family and life towards Jesus Christ.

The Rut Begins

As usual, things are falling into place for the Rut to hit the beginning of November. Crossland Outfitters has heard reports that the bucks are starting to pay more attention to does. Its typical that Halloween is a significant time of year that the chasing starts. During this time hunters will see a large increase in buck activity until the end of the rut. Signs of the pre-rut started on October 13th when Shawn successfully snort wheezed in a small buck within archery range. Scrapes are starting to show up, signaling the change in the season. This is the time of year that every deer hunter looks forward too. If your tag has not been filled be sure to make it out in the woods the first 3 weeks in November.

The Powerful Creator

While I (Shawn) was sitting in the stand one morning, waiting for sunrise, I looked up and saw two shooting stars. I sat there amazed. I thought to myself, all of this could not have miraculously created through macro-evolution. I thought this same thing over 10 years ago while I was elk hunting. Psalm 19 teaches us that God created the heavens and the Earth. Creation shouts that it was made by a powerful God! The shooting stars were a great reminder of how big our God is. Isn't it awesome that our God, who created the heavens and earth, cares so much for us that he would send his only son to die for us? I sat there reminded of the absolute love that God has for His people. It is hard to believe that a God that is powerful enough to create stars, mountains, and all of creation would care so much for His people that he would send his only Son Jesus Christ so that he may have fellowship with His people. Bass Fishing in the Fall

Lures such as minnow colored crankbaits, white spinnerbaits, and jerkbaits work well in the fall.

When a bass fisherman is asked when his favorite time to fish is, he will often respond with the fall. During the fall fish gorge themselves on food to prepare for the coming winter. Because of this, fisherman can expect this to be one of the hottest times to fish. Cooling temperatures make bass more active and move the fish shallower. Because bass are actively

feeding, they become much easier to catch. Fisherman looking to catch bass in the fall should look for bass in the backs of creeks. Shad tend to move to the backs of creeks during the fall and the bass will follow. It is recommended to use fast moving lures until the fish are found. Lures such as minnow colored crankbaits, white spinnerbaits, and jerkbaits work well in the fall.

A popular bait that has recently hit the industry is the Alabama Rig. This rig offers multiple lures on a single line allowing many fisherman to catch two fish at once.

Bow Fishing the Ohio

Bow Fishing has been hot on the Ohio River lately with Crossland Outfitters being able to get off 50+ shots in a single night. To bow fish the Ohio Crossland Outfitters uses a battery powered spotlight to locate shallow carp and gar at night. Crossland Outfitters then uses a barbed arrow that has a string connected to a bow to shoot the fish. The night typically ends with Crossland Outfitters donating the fish to local bank fishermen who are happy to receive them. The sport is highly active, offering many shots during the night. The average fish weighs 10 pounds, with fish exceeding 40 pounds. Bow Fishing is typically better when the boat traffic is at a minimum and when the water is clear.

Hunting Whitetails During the Rut

From Halloween until the end of November most whitetail hunters in the woods will find themselves hunting some phase of the rut. When hunters head to the stand during this time of the season they should look and keep the following items in mind: Does Hunters should hunt where does frequent. During this time, bucks are looking for a doe that is in heat. If a hunter is able to find the does it is only a matter of time before a buck will come strolling through to scent check the group. Funnels Funnels are areas that tend to gravitate deer. Many times funnels are created by the landscape. Look for saddles between two hills or inside field corners to bring a roaming buck within range. Funnels can also be man-made. Low-lying fences that offer easy crossing are often some of the most productive areas. Scent A deers nose is almost impossible to beat. Hunters need to be sure that they hunt stands that has the wind blowing in the opposite direction that the deer will come from. Playing the wind will greatly improve every hunters success. Once a deer smells you they will be much more cautious the next time they come to that area, that is if there is a next time.

Less Does Equals More Bucks

Today hunters have been blessed with an outstanding whitetail herd. However, due to improper regulations and management in many states does greatly out weigh the number of bucks. Many hunters think that higher doe numbers equals a greater opportunity for them to have male fawns the next year. However, research shows otherwise. The best scenario is having 1-2 doe(s) for every buck. Why is this? The less does there are means that bucks have to travel more to find a receptive doe during the mating season. The more bucks move the more likely that a hunter will see the buck. Also research shows that does will have fewer fawns if there are too many deer or not enough food. Therefore a deer is less likely to have a fawn when deer numbers are higher. Therefore one of the greatest things that a hunter can do to manage the herd to remove does. This will increase their likely hood of harvesting a buck.

What Hit my Head?

In October Crossland Outfitters found that the deer moved off of the fields and started to hit acorn trees. White Oaks were the most productive. This aligns with results from previous years. The later in the season that it becomes the more the deer will gravitate to the Red Oaks. Hunters should pay special attention to Oak trees after wind storms that go through the area. This can make many of the oaks fall making a prime attraction. Once the oaks start to become less available deer will move back off of the oaks and hunters will see increased activity in food plots that was planted earlier in the year.

Crossland Outfitters goal is to effectively share the Gospel with unbelievers. However, guiding hunters to have the opportunity to share the gospel has many costs associated with it. These costs include: gas, transportation equipment, equipment maintenance, tree stands, meals, personnel, seed, insurance, marketing, taxes, legal fees, and many other costs. Because of this, Crossland Outfitters appreciates and requires donations to help maintain and promote the ministry. Providing financial resources is not the only way to donate. Crossland Outfitters is dependent upon generous men and women who allow Crossland Outfitters to take unbelievers onto their land to experience Gods creation. All participants sign release waivers relieving property owners of any and all responsibility. Having land to take unbelievers on is just as important as financial gifts.
