Lancer Hall: An experience in luxury, elegance

By Joe Olvera , 2012

If you want to experience a unique dining experience, if you want to partake in a philosophy that says: come as customers, leave as family, then Lancer Hall is the place for you. At Lancer Hall, located at 3135 Trawood Drive, the staff believes in upholding exceptional quality service and in providing the absolute best service and amenities in El Paso. The superb kitchen offers for the discerning palate top grade beef and seafood selecgoodies. The dining room is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner Monday through Saturday. Paola Garcia, Lancer Halls Marketing Director, said the dining experience opened April 23, 2012, and it already tions, specialty and classic desserts, fine wines, and specialty and signature drinks. Not only does the dining room offer succulent dishes prepared by Chef Alfonso Tiscareo, but it also presents its culinary arts in an elegant setting that accommodates between 190 to 220 guests, and even up to 600 for extra special events. This particular area includes a highly romantic venue with a lighted fountain and bonfire a setting that makes for ideal outdoor ceremonies, such as weddings, quinceaneras, and other special celebrations creating for the lucky persons a lifetime of memories. And dont forget the musical extravaganza that is provided on Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the Mariachi Estrella, featuring Jose Aleman. This is gaining a reputation for highclass, but reasonable accommodations. We dont have anything special planned for Halloween because we have two other events scheduled, Garcia said. Our main concern is pleasing our clients and making sure that they undergo the best possible experience. We even have an event scheduled in which Army personnel from Fort Bliss will be involved. Garcia, daughter of the owner, said she has a Marketing Degree from UT El Paso, having graduated from the university last December. Our prices are very reasonable, even though we offer fine dining for gourmets and just regular folks, Garcia said. Were just like a regular restaurant, but, on a higher plane. Garcia said her dad also is part owner of the Vista Hills Country Club, and has other restaurants in El Paso, in Odessa and in Juarez. Its challenging to run an operation like this, especially since we took it over. I find myself explaining to customers about the new ownership. Our plans, however, are to continue doing what were doing, and that means offering exclusive, elegant service at reasonable prices.

William Shakespeare had it right

The current brouhaha over whether Naomi Gonzalez and Marisa Marquez crossed the party line when they came out on a flier saying that Dee Margo is a nice guy is, as Shakespeare said: Much ado about nothing. Okay, I understand that the battle between Democrats and Republicans tends to get ridiculous at times. And, yes, if you are a politician elected by your party, whichever that may be, you owe your allegiance to that party. But, cant we all be friends, here? No, I guess not. Let me say that, as an Independent voter, I can see both sides to the equation. I have, in the past, voted for Republican candidates oh, oh, there I go, being tossed out of the Democratic Party, even though I never have belonged to it, but, oh, well. As a Chicano, of course, my leanings have always been Democrat because, dont you know, that Party is the party of the poor, and you know, thats me poor Joe. Nary a dollar to his name. Im not exactly enamored of Dee Margo, even though he, surprise, surprise, recently discovered that there is a Hispanic in his family, which he didnt know about, until this election that is. How convenient, dont you think? Well, apparently Margos great-grandmother was from Mexico. But, I wonder, was she Mexican, or was she merely born there, as Mitt Romneys father was. He certainly wasnt Mexican he was born there of an Anglo father and mother. But, Dee, if your great-grandmama was born in Mexico why hadnt you told us before? Dees response: He didnt know how important this was to some people, meaning me, of course. Joe Moody, on the other hand, lists his race or ethnicity as Hispanic. That certainly makes a difference. Joe doesnt toot his own horn at being Hispanic, and he didnt suddenly remember that he is Hispanic, he just is. To my way of thinking, being Hispanic (Chicano) is a matter of pride, not something to bring down from the attic and dusting it off just because youre running for elective office. Either you are or youre not, you know? But, back to my two friends, Marisa and Naomi who ruffled the feathers of the Democratic Party because they think Dee is a good man. Maybe he is, I dont know. I do know Adair Margo, and I consider her my friend. She also speaks excellent Spanish. But, Dee? I dont know. Maybe he can take a crash course so that he can further prove his lineage. Se vale. But, to kick both women off the Democratic Party because they like Dee? Ludicrous. As if the Democratic Party is the paragon of virtue, a party of politicians who have never accepted a bribe, or done anything to bring shame to the Party. Look at the list of scofflaws who have been caught with their hands en la masa just like counting sheep, oh, oh, hey, guess what, many of them are Democrats. But, I guess they will also be banished from the Party. Even my friend, and yours, Rick Melendrez, brought shame to the party when last he was the Chairman. Remember? He didnt pay the rent for the partys headquarters, he was arrested. There are, of course, many more Democrats, at least this time around. I refuse to name them because you all know who they are. At some point, perhaps, the Democratic Party will disavow them too. But, it hasnt yet. Marisa and Naomi both have rooted for Democratic ideals, and their actions in Austin belie the fact that, as many people think have (gasp) become Republicans. They merely said, this guy, Dee Margo, is a nice guy, and he has been a team player, albeit, he is a Republican and he has promoted Republican ideals, such as tightening the screws on Mexicans jumping the border trae papeles? No, yo me limpio con la mano (ugh, thats gross, but, its a well-known joke among us Mexicans). I think that we shouldnt make such a big deal out of Marisas and Naomis liking Dee. After all, this is a free country, or, isnt it? At the same time I can understand the Democrats being up in arms. I guess you could compare it somewhat to a situation that if Dee were to say he likes Barack Obama and that he will vote for him for President which I wish he would the Republican Party would also kick him out on his behind. Of course, the Republicans are thrilled with Marisa and Naomi. They like that. But, that doesnt mean they are going to vote Republican, or are they? Wouldnt that be a kick in the mouth. But, again, as Shakespeare wrote in his comedic play, this situation of the two legislators really is Much ado about nothing. So, hang in there, Marisa and Naomi this too shall pass. Would that I could vote in your precincts, I would vote for you because not only are you my friends, but, you are both exemplary Democrats, no matter what Party officials say. Simon que si! Sin Fin

Our Winter Forecast

If you follow the latest computer models and keep up with the recent long range forecast, you might not be too pleased with El Paso's winter outlook. The Climate Prediction Center has just released the upcoming forecast for December, January and February (winter months). As you can see from the graphics below, much of the west and northern plains are expected to see above normal temperatures. Notice that Florida is expected to see below normal temperatures the only location in the country with that prediction. Most of the Midwest and east coast are a little more uncertain.

When it comes to precipitation (rain and/or snow) the El Paso area is under the "equal chance" (EC). This means that we will have an equal chance of seeing above, below or normal amounts of precipitation. Again, the models are having a hard time predicting what will develop due to the complex weather pattern setting up. Those areas hit hard by extreme drought over the past year (like the Midwest) are not expected see much relief from dry conditions. According to NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) this seasonal outlook does not project where and when snowstorms may hit or provide total seasonal snowfall accumulations. Snow forecasts are dependent upon the strength and track of winter storms, which are generally not predictable more than a week in advance..

By Sharon Mosley With the holidays fast approaching, it's time get down to some serious shopping for cocktail attire, that is. Most of us know the sinking feeling of having an important party to attend and feeling like we have nothing to wear. But before the ice cubes start tinkling, you can head off the panic attacks and take some advice from a fashion pro Nina Garcia. As the fashion director of Marie Claire magazine, a judge on the Project Runway series and author of Nina Garcia's Look Book: "What to Wear for Every Occasion," Garcia is an authority on what to wear on the party circuit. "It's a good thing I love a cocktail party," she says. "In my business, I sometimes attend a cocktail party or two every night of the week. So believe me when I tell you that I have this down to a science. Cocktail parties are about elegant, show-stopping outfits that turn heads. Period, the end." Luxury fabrics and embellishments are key to getting glamorous, according to Garcia. Ruffles, feathers, beading, or sequins are all welcome at a cocktail party though, generally, not all on one dress, says Garcia. Here are Garcia's tips from her Look Book on what to wear to your next soiree:

Separates: These are the pieces I personally

rely on for holiday festivities. Garcia suggests silky pants and a sequined tunic as an excellent alternative to the cocktail dress. "You can also wear sequined baggy peg leg trousers (very YSL), a silk jumpsuit, or sharp tuxedo pants." If you're in a tropical climate, even shorts can be dressed up with opaque tights and stilettos, she says. "Add a silk blouse, throw on a tuxedo jacket, and you're ready for action."

Accessories: "A little black dress is the perfect backdrop for a statement piece," she says. "Stunning drop earrings with an updo, an ornate cuff, or bangles to show off a toned arm." However she urges caution: "Always make sure your jewelry isn't taking over you or your ensemble and keep everything in proportion to your frame. Balance is key in dressing and in life." The Wrap: Garcia suggests wearing a sequin-encrusted number that will "encase you in a cloud of sparkle." For colder weather, she likes sumptuous velvet wraps or a faux fur chubby, stole, bolero or vest.

Party shoes: Go for strappy heels. "Metallics add glam to a simple dress," she says. Booties are another modern and chic way to accessorize cocktail attire, "especially with pretty lace or pattern stockings to add a little texture and whimsy." Handbag: A clutch or small bag is another accessory that can make a party outfit come alive. "A vintage bag is always a lovely accent piece," says Garcia. "Other alternatives are a clutch bag of soft material like leather, satin, or mesh; a box clutch, which is harder and usually geometric; or a jeweled minaudiere." And no, your bag does not have to match your shoes. "Choose a bag that complements your ensemble," she says. "For instance, if you're wearing black with a patterned or brightly colored shoe, go for something like a black beaded clutch with a detail or trim that picks up a color from the shoe."
Sharon Mosley is a former fashion editor of the Arkansas Gazette in Little Rock and executive director of the Fashion Editors and Reporters Association.

A Cocktail Dress: Nothing beats the LBD (little black dress), admits Garcia. "It's easy to accessorize, always slimming, total perfection. Black does not have to be boring; mixing textures or matte and shiny materials adds an interesting edge to your basic black." Garcia suggests adding a patent leather belt or shoes, or a satin jacket over a crepe dress. "For a posh event, I wear something simple and elegant. A tailored silhouette with a skirt that hits just below the knee is becoming to almost every figure. Anything that falls more than an inch or two below the knee to just above the ankle is a tough length to pull off, unless the skirt is very, very fitted or you are Grace Jones. Believe me."
When Garcia has a semiformal fashion industry event, she says she goes for "an edgier look: asymmetry, strong color and sophistication. Break out of your chromatic rut and try a gorgeous jewel tone or a rich, deep red or burnt orange."

Eat Your Fruits and Veggies; Wal-Mart, American Express Offer Non-bank Option Repeat Six More Times signed to be transactional, not to consumers who recognize It's the odd couple of personal 4:30 p.m. newscast, and can
Happiness and good mental health are highest among people who eat seven portions of fruit and vegetables each day, according to a University of Warwick study. Researchers studied the eating habits of 80,000 Britons, and found that feelings of well-being rose with the number of servings of fruit and vegetables, peaking at seven. Most government health agencies recommend at least five portions a day for cardiovascular health and to reduce cancer risk. Less than one-third of Americans average even two servings of fruit and vegetables per day. A serving is measured as 80 grams, or almost 3 ounces. The study did not distinguish between different types of fruit or vegetables, though we're pretty sure Brussels sprouts were not high on the list. finance. Wal-Mart and American Express are teaming up to circumvent the traditional banking system by offering a new, mostly free product to consumers. The new Bluebird account is being billed as an alternative to debit and checking accounts, while offering most of the same features. But its biggest attraction is that there is no minimum account balance, no fees (either monthly or annual), a free debit card and no credit inquiry required to open the account. The account offers a Bluebird card, which you carry in your wallet. But you can access your money or deposit cash at any Wal-Mart cash register. You can download a free app for your smartphone, letting you deposit a check by taking a photo, similar to apps now available at the largest banks. And you can pay bills online from this account at Bluebird.com. Friends or relatives with Bluebird accounts can transfer money directly to you or you can set up sub-accounts for your teens or college students, allowing quick money transfers. If you sign up for direct deposit of your paycheck, the card can be used with no fee to withdraw cash at MoneyPass network ATMs, more than 22,000 locations. Withdrawals through another ATM network are charged a $2 fee and local network fees may apply. The Bluebird card itself is an American Express product, so it can be used to charge purchases at any merchant or online site that accepts American Express. Those purchases benefit from Amex guarantees such as purchase protection. And holders also get Amex roadside assistance, Global Assist services and fraud protection. This card is designed to appeal that banking fees and charges have soared dramatically in the past two years. Wal-Mart and Amex point out that last year banks received more than $31 billion in overdraft fees. And studies show that consumers pay an average of $259 per year in basic checking fees. The Bluebird account has a fee schedule that is all zeros, including no charges for inactivity, for a replacement card, for any electronic bill payment, for customer service calls or for foreign currency transactions. There are no overdraft charges because you can't withdraw or charge more than your account balance. Bluebird is designed to be a "bank account in a box," says Wal-Mart's VP of Financial Services Daniel Eckert. You will be able to pick up this starter kit box at Wal-Mart checkout aisles for $5. Or you can sign up free online at www.Bluebird.com. Start by depositing from $1 to $500 to open the account. That can be done right away at the WalMart register. You can add as much as $10,000 per month to the account, with a limit of $1,000 in deposits in any one day. The Bluebird account is not an FDIC insured bank account. It is backed by the resources of American Express. So it is deserve as a savings reservoir. You cannot write paper checks on this account yet. The partners hint that service is coming in 2013. And you won't build up your credit record using this account, since it is solely a debit card. What this new Bluebird account does do is force traditional banks and credit unions to compete to serve their customers at lower costs. The Wal-Mart and American Express partnership doesn't have the huge overhead and physical infrastructure of traditional banks so their costs are lower. And the ordinary consumer is getting the benefit of that advantage. That's the Savage Truth. Terry Savage is a registered investment adviser and is on the board of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. DEAR ABBY by Abigail Van Buren

DISCOVERY OF WIFE'S TATTOO SHATTERS HUSBAND'S TRUST

DEAR ABBY: My wife and I have had many discussions regarding tattoos. She would say she wanted one; I'd disagree. Well, just before her birthday she had her best friend, a tattoo artist, give her a small tattoo of a dragonfly with dots representing our four children. I didn't know about it for about six weeks, until I walked up behind her at her computer desk and noticed it on her upper shoulder. Our kids knew and hadn't said anything. I got really mad and left the house for a while. When I returned and began arguing with her, she would say only that it was her body, and she would do whatever she wanted. I have gotten over the tattoo part, but I haven't forgotten about not knowing and how I finally found out. I am hurt that she didn't tell me. She doesn't think it's worth apologizing for. It seems like everything she does now is one big secret. Please advise. -- HURT TO THE BONE IN KENTUCKY DEAR HURT TO THE BONE: Your wife didn't tell you because she wanted to avoid the argument that she knew would follow. Your children didn't say anything because they were protecting their mother. It appears that you and your wife have significant communication problems. Counseling might help, and I recommend it because secrets can cause marriages to crumble. ** DEAR ABBY: When I was a young woman, I was a single parent. I did it all -- the cooking, the cleaning and working. My friends would laugh at how often I'd say, "I need a wife!" I didn't mean it in a sexual way; I simply hated housework and cooking. When I started dating my husband, my daughter told him, "Mom will never marry you. Men are just more wash and messes." He told her he would do the housework. Stupidly, I believed him. The economy tanked, I lost my job and I have become a housewife. I feel like I'm serving a life sentence in a prison of my own making. I tried to convince my husband to move so I could find a job and hire a maid. No luck. He decided that since we didn't need as much money, he would work less. Now he works parttime, and I want out. -- LIVING IN HELL IN NEW JERSEY DEAR LIVING IN HELL: Tell your husband that you didn't sign up for the role he has assigned to you. I'm sure he already knows you're not happy with the situation. If he is unwilling to resume working fulltime, then it will be up to you to find some kind of job that will enable you to save enough money to leave. ** Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. Write Dear Abby at www.DearAbby.com or P.O. Box 69440, Los Angeles, CA 90069. ** To order "How to Write Letters for All Occasions," send your name and mailing address, plus check or money order for $7 (U.S. funds) to: Dear Abby -Letter Booklet, P.O. You Deserved to Be Punished

DR. WALLACE: I'm 13 and in the eighth grade. I like school, and I get average grades. I admit that I've been in trouble at school for goofing off and playing practical jokes on some of my classmates. Yesterday during lunch in the cafeteria, I pulled the chair away from a boy who was about to sit down, and he fell on the floor. All the kids laughed and even the boy who fell thought it was funny. Everything was cool except that the cafeteria supervisor saw what happened and turned me in to the principal. He called my mother and told her to pick me up from school because I was being suspended for the rest of the day, plus the following day. NAMELESS: You deserved to be punished, and your father should have had a discussion with you on how stupid it was for you to cause a classmate to fall to the floor by pulling his chair away as he was about to sit down.
If you and your father will visit a public library and use Webster's New Universal Unabridged Dictionary to look up the word "jackass," you will see that it is a noun and the word for a male donkey. It also says a jackass is a stupid or foolish person. As you and your father can plainly see, the principal cannot be fired or disciplined for telling the truth. Therefore, your civil rights were not violated and hiring an attorney to tell you what I'm telling you at no charge would be a waste of money. If the classmate had suffered an injury, you and your parents might have actually needed an attorney for legal advice.

When I talked with the principal before my mother came to pick me up, he was really mad and called me a "stupid jackass." When I told my dad about the principal swearing at me, he forgot about my prank and was furious that the principal verbally abused me. He has made an appointment to talk with our school superintendent to issue a complaint and to see if the principal can be fired, or at least disciplined. He is even thinking about getting a lawyer and suing the guy because my civil rights have been violated. Nameless, Phoenix, Ariz.

His razor-sharp sword is very useful, but it becomes a brutal blade of precision when combined with handy gadgets and magical powers. For example, it's much easier to teleport right behind an enemy for an assassination instead of sneaking up on him, and sending a horde of rats at enemies will surely keep them occupied while I slip by unnoticed! In addition, Corvo can also possess animals and humans, and his crossbow can fire regular arrows as well as explosive and sleep-inducing projectiles. Trial and error is a big part of what makes this game so fun. How else could someone figure out ingenious tactics like: teleporting to the roof, busting through a window into the target's lair to slit their throat, using slow time to quickly carve up some guards, and then possessing a rat and running through small pipes to escape. Simply put, "Dishonored" has my vote for game of the year.

While many dogs enjoy swimming, few go to the extremes of a true water dog in maintaining a coat thats always damp if at all possible, and feet that are as muddy as can be. Walk around a puddle? Ive seen my dogs go out of their way to walk through a puddle. As if it werent hard enough to keep my old home clean, I decided to move to one that was even more difficult. Thats because the new home is on acreage, with more room for mud and more reason to be out in it, since Im outside with the dogs every day feeding my horses. I had to up my game to keep this house clean, but the same rules applied. The best way to keep floors clean is to never let them get dirty. And that means catching those muddy paws before they come inside. Here are some tips:

Use mats. Put water-trapping mats both inside and outside the door. A small doormat can be jumped over, so go for something larger. The wider the area of matting, the more chance you have of every paw hitting the mat at least once. Outside my doors, I have large black industrial mats that hose off easily. Inside, I have colorcoordinated Waterhog mats from L.L.Bean expensive

Good chemistry
Newman, former crew chief Borland reunited
move to Danica Patricks team beginning at her home track, Phoenix International Raceway. Now the NASCAR world will see if Newman and Borland can recreate their winning chemistry. Greg Zipadelli, the former crew chief for Tony Stewart who now serves as competition director at Stewart-Haas Racing, believes they can. Matt Borland has had great success as a crew chief, and much of it came when he and Ryan Newman worked together, Zipadelli said in a team release. Matt and Ryan both have engineering backgrounds, and they have similar mindsets. Its a pairing that produced some very good results and theres no reason why it cant produce similar results now that theyre back together. Their four races together this year will position them very well for 2013. Zipadelli isnt alone in the Sprint Cup garage when it comes to seeking the right chemistry among key members of a race team. Eddie Wood, part of the second generation of the Wood Brothers racing team, said when a team hits on the right combination of personnel, it should do everything it can to keep them together. I used to make fun of people who talked about chemistry, but Im pretty much a believer in it now, because Ive lived it, he said. There have been combinations that have been magic and shouldnt have gotten messed up and changed, but they did. And it was usually outside interference.

Stewart: Danicas schedule not easy

Danica Patrick has struggled in her limited Sprint Cup appearances this year, but her car owner Tony Stewart said that one day shell thank him for that, as it should speed up the learning curve as she makes the difficult transition from openDanica Patrick wheel Indy cars to NASCAR-style cars. We picked races that were going to be hard, he said. They are not supposed to be easy There wasnt anything to learn by going to easy tracks this year on a partial schedule. The schedule she is going to have next year, she is going to have to go to these hard tracks. Being able to just have the experience of going the year before, even if its a rough experience, you at least learn and get a base of that track. Any time you do something for the first time its tough. The second time is always easier Though she may not see the benefit of it right now, she will next year.

n Sprint Cup racing, or any team sport for that matter, chemistry between driver and crew, or coach and players, is often cited as one of the keys to success. Team chemistry is difficult to explain and almost impossible to intentionally create. It just seems to happen. When it does, the results are often phenomenal. But the chemistry also can be lost, and the results soon show it.

chunk of them with Leonard Wood as his crew chief. Jeff Gordon had his best years with Ray Evernham as his crew chief, and Bobby Labonte was at his best with Jimmy Makar calling the shots. Together they won 19 races, but Labonte has only won two since they parted. Ryan Newman won 12 races and 37 poles while working with crew chief Matt Borland at Penske Racing from 20022006. Since then, Newman has won four races and 11 poles. But beginning this week at Martinsville Speedway, Newman and Borland will be reunited. The change is part of a personnel shuffle at Stewart-Haas Racing that will see Newmans current crew chief, Tony Gibson,

Chase Chart following the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway

Chase races have him essentially out of the running for the title. We went through a couple months where we didnt perform as well, he said. Unfortunately, one of those months ran into the Chase. 10. Kevin Harvick -59 (finished 11th) His Chase results have been remarkably consistent, with five finishes between 11th and 13th and one of 16th, but thats not good enough to contend for the championship. 11. Greg Biffle -62 (finished 27th) The points leader at the end of the 26-race regular season had another disappointing outing as he crashed out while running third. I wrecked it bad, he radioed to his crew as he drove his battered car to the pits. 12. Dale Earnhardt Jr. 122 (did not compete) After sitting out the past two races while recuperating from concussions, hes expected to return to the No. 88 Chevrolet this week at Martinsville Speedway, but his title hopes are over for this year.

the schedule, including Martinsville, where he has four wins. We just shot ourselves in the foot a lot, he said. 4. Clint Bowyer -25 (finished sixth) He had hoped to back up his Charlotte victory with another at his home track, but it was not to be. Weve just got to keep digging, he said. I was hoping to gain a little bit more than that, but we had a solid day. Just frustrating, though. 5. Kasey Kahne -30 (finished fourth) He was running second late in the race, but stalled his car trying to save fuel under caution and dropped to sixth for the final restart, ending what appeared to be a good chance for victory. We had a good car; we got back to fourth, he said. 6. Martin Truex Jr. -43 (finished second) Another strong run at Kansas wasnt enough to give him much of a boost in the points standings. Thats a good run for us, for sure, he said. Just a little

bit too tight there at the end there to run with Matt [Kenseth]. 7. Tony Stewart -47 (finished fifth) The defending Cup champion overcame a penalty for driving away from his pit stall with a wrench in his car, then saved his car when he looked to be about to crash. We have a ways to go, but Im really proud of our guys, he said. 8. Jeff Gordon -51 (finished 10th)

his points lead. It seemed like every wreck that happened, happened right in front of me, he said. It was a tough day. 2. Jimmie Johnson -7 (finished ninth) Despite a wreck that looked as if it could send their car to the garage for lengthy repairs, the No. 48 crew patched up their car and Johnson drove it to a top-10 finish. 3. Denny Hamlin -20 (finished 13th) Early race handling woes, coupled with a late stop for fuel, left him with a mediocre finish. But some of his best tracks remain on

Marking the spot with the BMW X3

and does take some getting used to as it doesnt slide forward or back in a conventional fashion, instead it pivots in place. Next to it is the now familiar (but sometimes annoying) iDrive. For those unfamiliar with it, iDrive is a knob that controls most functions like the radio and climate control systems. It has matured over the years and many find it very intuitive, but a bit of study and exploration is highly recommended to get the best out of it. The near-perfect stance of the X3 makes it ideal for entry or egress. You sit higher than most sedans but low enough to still provide comfort and support. The second row is comfortable for two adults; three can fit but it may be too close for comfort. Leg room is surprisingly generous and the tall roofline means lots of headroom. Behind the back seat, there is about 19 cubic feet of cargo space. Need more space to haul items? The 60/40 split seat folds to give a total of 56 cubic feet cargo capacity. All X3s are equipped with BMWs xDrive a permanent all-wheel-drive system that is really quite impressive. xDrive adjusts front and rear wheel torque accordingly to driving conditions, and can sense which wheel needs By The Numbers:

equipped the X3 with a rear view camera and a navigation system. As the BMW 3-Series is the bench mark for luxury sports sedans, the same can almost be said for the X3. Power from the turbo six is brisk and plentiful, but the X3 really shines in the handling department, where it feels more like a sports car than an SUV, mostly in part to the xDrive system. In my week with the X3, I became a big fan of it, probably because Im not a huge fan of SUVs - and the X3 hardly feels like one. Its easily one of the best-looking SUVs on the road and it drives like a BMW should with excellent communication between driver and road. With pricing starting in the upper-$30s, I wouldnt call the X3 unreasonable. Yes you can get bigger SUVs for less money, and even more luxurious SUVs for less money, but none of them would be a Bimmer.

Im going to come right out and say it the BMW X3 is not for everyone wanting an SUV. If you want a vehicle that can go four-wheeling, carry tons of stuff, and be luxurious, the X3 is not for you. But if you want a vehicle that is powerful, drives like a sports car and looks stylish then read on. Last year, BMW fully redesigned the X3 making it bigger, more powerful and drive better. Its still considered a small luxury crossover SUV, but in reality the X3 is now almost the same size as the original X5 BMWs large SUV. No longer based off of the 3Series car, the five-passenger X3 is now built alongside the X5 and X6 SUVs at BMWs Spartanburg Plant in Greer, South Carolina. From just about any angle the

more power and apply it, if necessary. This ensures for a safe ride when road and weather conditions are not up to par. But when the roads are ideal, xDrive allows for a very exhilarating experience. It handles extremely well and like all BMWs, the steering is quick and with plenty of feel. There are two different X3 models and they are differentiated by their engines. Unfortunately BMWs naming convention no longer makes it easy to determine the engine size. Both models feature a 3.0 liter inline-6 cylinder engine. The entry level X3 - the xDrive28i is rated at 240 horsepower and has 17-inch wheels. The xDrive35i ups that to 300 horsepower by way of a turbocharger and it rolls on 18inch wheels. A panaramic sunroof is standard on the xDrive35i. Both utilize an eight-speed automatic transmission. My tester came to me as an xDrive35i loaded with cool (and expensive) features like a Sport Activity Package that adds 19-inch wheels and sport seats, a Cold Weather Package that put heaters in those seats and steering wheel, the Premium Package which added a power tailgate, rear window shades and ambience lighting, and a Technology Package that

X3 looks handsome and nicely tailored. Up front you will spot BMWs trademark twin-kidney grille and chiseled hood. The squinting headlights round the corners to crisp body lines. At the rear, the body tapers slightly toward the top, giving it a larger, more impressive stance. It all works very well together making it one of the best looking SUVs on the road.

The X3s interior will be familiar to anyone that has spent time in a BMW. While not the most luxurious, its still tastefully done in an expensive way with nearly perfect fit and finish. On the dash, analog gauges that seem to have gone unchanged for the past 20 years continue to be used - and still look great. The consolemounted gearshift lever controls the automatic transmission

Cautions, sliding at Kansas

After much of this years Sprint Cup season has seen races run for long stretches of green-flag racing, and many events boil down to fuel-mileage contests, along came the Hollywood Casino 400 on the repaved and reconfigured Kansas Speedway. The race saw a track record and Cup season-high 14 caution periods, most of them for wrecks that saw many of the sports most skilled drivers losing control of the cars and slamming into the wall. Even race winner Matt Kenseth smacked the wall at one point. Everything is just on edge, said Kyle Busch after he was involved in a crash with Ryan Newman. Youre really slipping and sliding and fighting for as much grip as you can find out there. Busch admitted hed been struggling with a loose condition with his car, but still blamed Newman for the crash. Newman just ran up on the back of me and got me loose Ive been loose all day and then he ran into the back of me and spun me out, so just impatience I dont know what that was for or why or whatever, but Im glad hes wrecked along with me, and hell get another one here before the year is out. Newman said the wreck was Buschs fault. He just got loose in front of me, and its so fast [at Kansas] its hard to check up when he is getting sideways, he said. He already lost control of the car once earlier in the race. Its kind of treacherous on the tires. Jimmie Johnson, who wrecked his car but bounced back to finish ninth, said it was hard to keep from crashing. Restarts were pretty wild, he said. You had to run so hard that when something happened and you lost grip, the car just stood up on the tires and would take

off and you couldnt control it, and the guys were sliding everywhere. It wasnt just the guys who were sliding everywhere. Danica Patrick wrecked her No. 10 Chevrolet after intentionally spinning Landon Cassills No. 83 Toyota. Its been pretty consistent with [Cassill] getting into me, Patrick said. So at some point in time, I have to stand up for myself, or everybodys going to do it. Cassill, on his two-way radio, offered his comment. Rule No. 1 in stock car racing is learn how to wreck someone without wrecking yourself, he said. Cassill, who escaped the Patrick effort at retaliation without significant damage to his car, went on to finish 18th, tying his best finish of the season. Patrick finished 32nd, not far off her average finish of 30.2 in eight Cup starts this year.

Ford, RPM renew partnership

Ever since the announcement that Penske Racing is moving from Dodge to the Ford camp beginning next season, there have been questions about how the move would affect other Ford-backed teams, particularly Richard Petty Motorsports. But last week Ford and RPM announced they would continue their partnership into next season, which means Pettys two Cup teams and one Nationwide entry will be running Fords for the fourth straight year. RPM announced that it will continue to race the No. 9 Fusion with backing from Stanley and Dewalt and the No. 43 Ford Fusion with Smithfield Foods. Aric Almirola drives the No. 43, and Marcos Ambrose the No. 9. The teams No. 43 Nationwide Series entry, driven by Michael Annett, will return with backing from Pilot/Flying J.
